Group Type: Online (Discord text for play, with character sheets on dndbeyond, and supplemental material on Dropbox)
Experience: I’ve been playing since I was little. And that’s, like, forever. I have experience with older editions, White Wolf, GURPS, blah, blah, blah. I’m comfortable playing or DMing 5e, it’s way user friendly. Not saying I’ve never made a mistake, but more likely to err in the player(s) favor.
I’m okay with players of any experience level. Ideally, I’m looking for creative people that want to have fun. Be able to play nice with others.
Location/Timezome: I live in New York, so, Eastern.
Schedule: I’m aiming forformal “sessions” to happen once a week (maybe twice if timing works out for everyone), which would be late evenings Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. I would also like to see role play based off provided prompts on Discord, or improvised player initiated elements that further the plot that can happen at any time. Like a living world.
Roles Sought: Players! I’m not solid on the number, but I would like at least four players to start with the regular sessions. If there are more players, it could increase the amount of prompts and improvised role play and possibly allow for multiple sessions per week, once again, schedules allowing. Ideally, I’d love to grow the idea. Y’know, if it doesn’t suck.
Game Style: If you hadn’t noticed, I’m a talker. I try to be as descriptive as possible and place a serious emphasis on the role playing. Not everybody is Mark Twain, and I get that, but I appreciate effort! Social interactions will play an important part in the campaign and have consequences. There will also be combat, traps, poison, and all other manner of dangerous things, because that’s fun.
The world is a Homebrew that I came up with spontaneously and spent a day working on. It’s lore is sort of in it’s infancy (but still a bunch of pages already), but I’ll send the rough draft to all interested. The focus is on a city that is a melting pot of the different cultures of Humans, Elves, Dwarves, etc. The city features a broad range of backgrounds and social mobility. Do you want to uphold the law or break it?
It is a very high magic setting. Magic mimics many of the modern things around us in the capital city. There is a disparity in it’s availability, but that’s all the more reason to become aligned with Factions or find other ways to move up in the world. A sharp tongue can be just as useful as a sharp sword sometimes.
I do have some restrictions: No Aasimar, Genasi, Gith, Eberron, or Ravnica races. I just don’t see them in the setting. With Classes that depend on a Deity or Patron, we can work out the deets, because I’ve barely scratched the surface on that. Sorcerers will be tied to an existent bloodline that we can work on together.
Disclaimer!:
The atmosphere will be kind of dark, but not without humor. Mature themes, mysteries, social/political intrigue, and everybody’s favorite NPC getting horribly murdered in front of them are a few of my favorite things. I’m aiming for Game of Thrones/Spartacus/Japanese Horror vibes. Moral ambiguity, backstabbing, the highest and the lowest working together for their own ends. I’m definitely a little twisted and not easily shocked. This will be more HBO than NBC. If you can’t be an adult about such things, or you find them unpleasant, this isn’t the campaign for you. Sorry!
If I didn’t scare you off, please let me know what kind of character you’d be interested in playing! The setting is still coalescing in my head, so seeing what people would be interested in would be helpful. Please feel free to ask any questions. Thanks for taking the time if ya read all that!
I would be interested in learning more about your setting and seeing if I’d be a good fit. EST is no problem, but I’ve got young kids and so i wouldn’t be able to go past midnight based on your availability. If that’s a deal breaker I would understand.
As as far as characters, I’ve been kicking around ideas for a dwarven grave domain cleric whose clan has been shattered/destroyed, a half-elven enchanter school wizard looking for fame and power, and an older human paladin disgusted by the vice and avarice within his organization order/religion, looking to keep his own sense of justice burning and rebuild into something righteous.
Dont know if those work thematically for your setting but i would be eager to build on them or do anything else toward building an interesting narrative.
A friend and I would be very interested in joining your campaign! We are available on Sundays, and Wednesday mainly and would love to see if we fit in with the rest of the group (assuming there are others). I have some experience myself DM'ing, and playing, with a solid understanding the rules whereas my friend has only recently been introduced to the world of Dungeons and Dragon.
Needless to say, we are both interested in joining the group and would be willing to use whatever medium to chat while we play.
Hey there! I'm totally interested! Is this a more modern or medieval setting?
Super question! It’s a modern medieval setting, I s’pose? When I got back into DMing there were a lot of new players that didn’t seem very into medieval fantasy, so I Homebrewed magic cell phones, magic mirrors that were akin to televisions, and other modern things that got the “it’s just magic” splainy. It seemed to gel well with the people that I’ve used it with and I wanted to give the main city a “modern” feel while the outer lands are more traditional. There aren’t cars (yet?), but there are “subways” and airships.
Here’s the quick synopsis, for those that are interested...
The Orbit: the highest + the lowest
Approximately one thousand years ago, a war broke out in a world overflowing with magic. The powers at play were great enough to tear the realm from it’s moorings within existence. In an instant, almost every living creature was wiped from being. Only through the intervention of a powerful Wizard was anything saved. As parallel planes shattered together around her, she used her abilities to reach out and save whatever she could.
In the void that remained, she had created a bubble of life, that floated slowly through it. Inside the pocket she opened were the scraps from different realms that she had managed to preserve. Some lands had been merged, others hovered in space, and a few were even hidden. Those that would become the ancestors of the races of this “world” were all touched by her in some way.
Before she ascended to a crystal palace in the sky, she crafted the foundation for the capital city of the Orbit, Cieldormir... Of course, these are all just legends. The myths of creation. The world is old enough that those that were there at the beginning are long gone, but young enough that their oral traditions remain. The people of the Orbit still talk about Ciel and wonder if she really is up there. Some stories question if she was the only one to survive the death of her reality.
Cieldormir and it’s surrounding territory are a melting pot of races, classes, and ideas. Unlike the origin lands for the various races, which display xenophobic tendencies, a progressive mindset prevails. The city itself is divided by a river into two districts: Odette and Odile. Odette is polite and tidy, the haven of the old bloodlines of the Orbit. Odile is grim and gritty, a place where the desperate come to make dreams come true.
Magic fuels both halves of the city. A number of magical conveniences make life in the city unlike anywhere else in the Orbit. There is public transit, sanitation, law enforcement, and all the other infrastructure of a living city. Many industries are dependent upon, or at least aided by, the strong magic that exists within the realm. Magic items are frequently created, bought, and sold. Some bloodlines are more attuned to this inherent magic and have turned that into industry, and influence, within the city.
Over the past two centuries, a Senate has formed in Odette to represent all the citizens of the Orbit. This has firmly established Cieldormir as the capital of the world, as well as Odette’s position as the city’s crown jewel. Odile became where all the dirty secrets were kept. So by coincidence or design, this led to organized crime using it as a central meeting location.
The people of the Orbit are predominantly content. There has been widespread peace for decades. Resources are abundant. It’s not difficult to make an honest living. However... be it simple wanderlust, the thrill of adventure, the want for money, power, fame... Not all are so complacent.
There are myriad ways to get what one wants, or where one wants. In Odette, the power games are politics, secrets, and celebrity. The ambassadors from the other lands of the Orbit, hungry aristocrats, and aspiring artists. In Odile, it’s sex, violence, and drugs. Courtesans, assassins, and dealers. And all of it dipped in magic.

Nice... I love that kind of concept, did a similar campaign with communication orbs... like smartphones and the like as homebrew magic items so I am very into things like the Eberron setting or homebrew campaigns that are creative and bold enough to take a step beyond the typical medieval setting into new an unexplored territories. Such can really put a whole new spin on things. That is something I caught in your first post that got me very, very interested in getting in on what you are looking to start up here. Once word spreads I imagine will quickly be a rush of players wanting to join popping up.
Hello! I'm interested in this campaign! It sounds really cool and I would like to join! A disclaimer though, I don't know much about dnd other than the basics and this will be one of my first campaigns if I get in. Thanks for considering!
I wanted to say thanks to everybody for all the interest! Honestly did not expect the response I got. Probably going to be a few days before anything is set in stone. I'll be posting more information in the Story and Lore forum regarding the setting. I'm trying to touch base with everybody via PM to see what they would be interested in playing. Feel free to message me first if you haven't heard from me. Thanks!
Hello. I just signed up to dndbeyond to help create a character for a local, in-person campaign.
Then I stumbled in here and saw your post. I’m interested in joining your campaign—but only if you will be meeting Saturday evenings. (I work until 1am Mountain time M-F, and I’ll be playing Sundays with my r/l friends.)
I’m a heavy RPer who enjoys playing complex, personality-driven characters that add to the social dynamic of the group. Oh, and I abhor min/maxing and looking on the internet for “builds” for the sake of numbers. I play RPGs to create and be part of stories. If I wanted to manipulate numbers, I would go do my taxes. :-)
If you are getting together on Saturdays, and you need an extra player, please let me know.
Hey everybody! I'm keeping the recruiting open for a bit longer while I contact everybody and get an idea of what everyone wants to play. So far there's been an awesome mix of classes and races brought up. I am still working on some of the Lore and will be updating that thread later today with background stuff on the races in the setting. Thanks so much for the enthusiasm and patience!
I know I am a bit late, but your world seems quite interesting and I would love to join you, if possible. I have an entirely open weekend schedule, and the effort you are putting into this world is very apparent! As a fellow RP'er, your young world looks like an absolute joy to delve into. If you still have room, please let me know.
Hello there, i am relatively new to DnD i played a few years a go with some friends and as of lately i've grown more and more interested in finding a group to play in. I have only made one character atm however i will be making more as time goes by. i have read about your world and it seems like a very interesting place one of which i would love to participate in that is if there is still room.

I really appreciate the interest, thanks! Unfortunately, Saturday will not be one of the days that the actual sessions will occur. Those will pretty much be exclusive to weekdays, because I’m involved in lots of IRL D&D on the weekends and am a workaholic that doesn’t believe in ‘vacation’ or ‘days off.’ However, if you’re into heavy role playing, there will be channels on the Discord dedicated to free form stuff where they can interact with other players or NPCs whenever. Maybe the replies won’t be immediate all the time, but it will be there. I want to provide a space for people to kinda be able to drop in and out if they just need a little RP fix without having to play in sessions regularly. Giving players more flexible ways to level up or random opportunities at sessions as time allows. Spontaneity will be a thing. Sorry about Saturdays, but let me know if you’d be otherwise interested!

I’m definitely still looking to have people join. I even made this thing...
Player Name: (This doesn’t have to be your real/legal name. I dun care about that. What would ya like to be called out of character? You can leave this blank if you’d prefer to just be called by your character name. No pressure.)
Character Name: (This part is required. I guess? “Hey, you, the Half-Orc Rogue with the Studded Leather Armor!” doesn’t really roll off the tongue.)
Race, Gender, Class, Alignment, et cetera: (All those things you pick from the books. Stats are player’s choice. You may use point buy, standard array, or roll for stats. Rolling will probably be done in a Discord server as we finalize all the characters.)
Background: (You can pick one from the book, or providing it isn’t some crazy game-breaking nonsense, use a Homebrew or custom. I encourage the Homebrew and custom stuff for this.)
Copypasta that, fill it out, and tell me a little bit about the character. I did post more in then Story & Lore forum for additional info on the setting. Working on following up on all my PMs with everybody! Thanks for all the awesome support and patience!
Over the weekend I am hoping to finalize all the details with the interested players concerning their characters, get the Discord working smoothly (thanks to Oddlot for all the help with that!), and get this party started. I'm still open to new submissions, too! If anybody hasn't heard back, or hasn't filled out my little application thing a couple posts back, please contact me and fill out the thingie. Thanks!
