Hello potential adventurers.... I'm a long-time DM looking to expand my gaming network to include a Discord Game. I've DM'd discord only games before to some success. I currently DM and play (alternating weeks) with a group of real life friends located in warm, sunny Michigan. I'd like to invite you to apply to join me in a weekly homebrew game to take place at 7:30PM EST - 10:30PM EST one week-day per week.
I've written up the central plot of the campaign I'd like to run, but with this game, I intend on letting the players be the driving force behind the story via their backstories. But, the setting and campaign itself can be described with the following theme in mind "moral ambiguity". I am going to allow homebrew content made for 5E as long as I can take a look at it ahead of time and it must be understood that if it is found to be game breaking, we might need to do a bit of tweaking.
There are things we need to know about each other:
Me as a DM:
I have played RAW (Rules as Written) through like 3 editions of D&D. All of those rule sets have combined in my noodle, so if I've accidentally used rules in an earlier edition, please let me know. I play D&D for fun, not to litigate the finer points of game design. So, above all else the rule of cool stands supreme.
Metagaming is only fun when playing a split screen FPS. Please don't do it in our game. Metagaming is usually rewarded with lightning bolts from the angered gods.
Battle maps: I've become aware there is quite a debate between people that champion Theatre of the Mind versus using Battle maps because I copied and pasted this thread from some other DM who was LFG. I will post stuff that I think looks cool and adds to the story. BattleMaps are reserved for live play, Roll 20 just takes too long. I make every attempt to be judicious when characters use area of effect spells.
This is a homebrew setting and a new campaign. Think of this as a first draft... Go nuts and try to do cool new stuff to solve the problems presented.
I have access to most of the published content and will be sharing it in the campaign you will join, so you do not need to own anything to participate.
You as a player:
You should be willing to create a character with a backstory that you will have to reveal to other players as they interact with you. You are also expected to try and interact with other NPC's and especially other players to explore their backstories they so meticulously created.
Real life happens. If you can't make it to an assigned game, just shoot me a discord message and I'll play your character for the day. But just realize that I love to make characters walk tightropes over volcano's. Kidding...
This is a pet peeve of mine and I apologize to those this disqualifies, but you have to have a decent grasp of the English language.
Looking for folks who are over 18.
Pick a class, race, and background.
Pick 2 Personality Traits, 1 Ideal, Bond and Flaw.
Write up a backstory that tries to incorporate all of the traits, ideals, bonds and flaws into it.
DM this information to me. You wouldn't want your potential party mates to know your whole schtick before the game starts, would you?
Once we have a group of 5-6 players, we will have a session zero to introduce characters and define your connections to each other (if any). It will be your job to bring the party together for the adventure (Lazy GM!).
Recruitment will be open through Sunday 12/9/2018. Session Zero will take place 12/12.
I've been playing/DMing/Binging Critical Role all year, so I know my way around the rules. I also have everything but the latest books unlocked, so I can be just about anything.
