I have been working on a new D&D discord idea for a while and only recently started to put it together. I have been apart of a lot of one shot servers and Adventure league serves in the past and they have all had some problems that I noticed and I wanted to try and minimize. I have wanted to be apart of a discord server for D&D where I can pick up a game as a player or run a one shot or a small module for a while. One where I will recognize some faces that join my games as well as some new faces I never knew before.
In the other servers I’ve been apart of there were always too many people in them to really moderate who came in to the server. Often times there would be thousands of people on the server and it gave you the same experience that LFG does on Roll 20 or other Forums. There was also a large discrepancy between how many DMs and how many players there were. Another problem was that the players were often restricted by character creation rules set by the server. While some are easier than others and necessary for organized play which includes rewards it always feels out of place for one shot servers.
To fix the large server issue that doesn't feel like a community is simple. I will limit the amount of players in the server as well as the invite link. I don't plan on releasing a blank invite link to all. We want members who can DM or be players. If everyone in the server both want to play and DM then there will be no large DM/player discrepancy.
(If you are a new player and want to join then please let us know. New players are the only exceptions. They usually end up being the best in my groups.)
To fix the character restrictions on servers of having specific rules and verification processes of making certain you aren't cheating this server will not have that. When a DM is looking for players they will set what restrictions they have in place. This can be PHB only, Basic rules only, Unearthed arcana allowed, 3rd party source, or homebrew. It’s all up to the DM and whatever game he is running.
