I've tried to jump into a few games via Roll20, DnD Beyond, Reddit, etc but have been having trouble connecting to a group and getting started.
I see a ton of other posts by newbies like me who want to try playing but are in the same sort of boat.
So I figure why don't we all jump in and figure out what we don’t know together!
My thought here would be to do a chaptered campaign for newbies with each of us taking a turn as DM for a session or two. I'd probably kick everything off in the first few sessions as DM & organizer. If not everyone is interested in taking a turn behind the DM chair that's cool too.
Assuming we all like each other & our characters the initial chapters can morph into a bigger stakes campaign or another module.
Basic thought here is we set the stage as a bunch of friends meeting up at a tavern for a first time in a long while. If you've read the Dragonlance / War of the Lance series you'd get the basic setup I'm thinking of.
We all get there and one by one each character 'reminisces' of a past adventure that we'd then play through. Nothing major like lich battles or saving the world, but smaller stakes stories and heroics. Each one of these adventures would end with a time (& level jump). Whomever is 'remembering' the past story would have their character side by side the others as an NPC (so they'd still be involved). Of course we couldn’t really have a TPK or character death in flashback sequence, but it's meant to be a low stakes intro anyhow.
I picked up a bunch of DM assets from Humble Bundle a while back so I can share/help if anyone wants to build maps, take inspiration for encounters, but theater of the mind is awesome too.
Basic schedule / outline (Based on 6 chapters) • Session 0 - (either as an actual session or just via chat/discord/whatever) ○ Figure out characters ○ Discuss DM ordering & any other details ○ Basic team building • Session 1ish - DM 1 ○ Tavern arriving & initial character socialization ○ Start of flash back to their first meeting - level 1 adventure. Killing some wolves, doing some stupid cave diving and almost getting killed by trolls, etc. • Session 2ish - DM 2 ○ Back at tavern - flash to next adventure/mishap - level 2 characters • Session 3ish - DM 3 ○ Back at tavern - flash to next adventure/mishap - level 3 characters • Session 4ish - DM 4 ○ Back at tavern - flash to next adventure/mishap - level 4 characters • Session 5ish - DM 5 ○ Back at tavern - flash to next adventure/mishap - level 5 characters • Session 6ish - DM 6 ○ Back at tavern - flash to next adventure/mishap - level 6 characters • Session 7ish - ○ We've got the ropes down, continue w/ the existing characters continue off on a well-known module
With all that said I've got young kids and day/weekend time is at a premium for me so I'm looking for a weekday night time meetup - 8pm+ PDT. I'm flexible on day of week & could do weekly or less frequent if that is what majority rules.
If you are interested in the format and would like to try it out let me know and we can cobble together a good time.
I'm completely new to D&D and would love to join, I've got a campaign I'm gonna be a part of but it hasn't started yet. But this sounds fun too.
Only thing is, I live in Taiwan, and with that time (which works out about 11.00am Taiwan time) I'd only really be available on Friday nights PDT (Which is 11.00am Saturday morning for me)
Hate to come across as picky with the times, but work commitments and time zone differences and all that ...
Anyway, if that is good, I'd love to join. If not, it's no problem at all :)
Hello there! This sounds fantastic! I just started D&D so I'm desperately looking for good people to play with, mostly because I am completely unaware of how it's done. Let me know if you're interested! :)
Hey whats up. Brand new player here and was pointed to this post by another player. This sounds like a great way to in to the game. I am down to try this out.
I am on the west coast, PST, and have kids as well, so weekends are hard, so weeknights sounds good. My discord name is evilcj#9296
Would really like to join in. I am in the Central time zone so 10 pm weeknights is perfect. I am in the same boat (kids, work, and such). I am brand new with a level 1 Half Elf Ranger character just created.
Communication - I'll setup a discord channel for us to all chat and send out invites. We'll use discord for voice & chat (it seems to be the best bet from my limited research). I'll shoot some DM's out. If I miss you then DM me and I'll fire one off.
Timing - I'd prefer a Wednesday or Thursday @ 8 PM PDT, but I know two others preferred Friday. I'll put up a quick poll for it and figure out what works best for the largest group of people.
Races/Classes - I'm not against homebrewing it, but since this is more of an introductory game I lean towards sticking to the 'canon' source books. (i.e. anything on DnD Beyond is cool). I'll personally be using DnD beyond for my character creation & sheet.
Visualization - I'll set up a Roll20 for the virtual table top, I've been messing around with it and looks pretty neat for visualizations.
Kick Off / Starting - I can do as soon as the week of August 19th. Once we figure out who all is committed we can do a session 0 via voice or text on discord. Session 0 is pre-campaign to align align characters, schedules, objectives, etc.
Hi! I actually have a bit of experience playing D&D so if you need or want someone to try and help other new players and show them the ropes I would be glad to help!
Hi, I’ve been interested for a long time now to play D&D, so I would love to join and learn alongside you guys. I’m on CST and I’m comfortable playing at 10 pm, during the weekday.

I am a noob in DnD, and this sounds like a good way to get introduced into it.

Looks like we have some good interest in this! I'll put together some more details this evening and we can figure out day of week and a start date.
I was thinking of keeping it more medieval, because tech looks like its a bit more tricky to DM.
That said I'm open to things. What did you have in mind?
very interesting what day and time?
I look forward to this, it sounds really fun.
I love the medieval theme, can't wait.

Fantastic - so here is what I'm thinking:
Hey, I'm new to D&D and I would like to join if you have room still. I too have children, work ect. So 10ish week days CST works for me.
Side note - thread isn't closed for anyone wandering into this. I'll update when we have a full group.
DM me if interested.
Thanks!
