Newbie player, Wants to join campain,.. help?

I uh, always have been interested with D&D But due to various reasons, never got to actually play it. So I don't much about the modifiers and the types of dices, so I'm hoping that

maybe there is someone patient enough for me,,, id love to learn how to properly play D&D

Not sure why this is posted here, but you don't add your proficiency bonus to your damage rolls, only to your attack (trying to hit) roll. Other modifiers to damage (like STR or DEX) would only apply once after the die sum as been calculated (2d6 yields a 2 and a 6, so 2+6+5[Str Mod @ 20] = 13).
