I'm writing an unconventional campaign setting for D&D 5e. It has a definitive thread and an ending sort-of planned, and I want to start fresh and level up your characters up to level 20 while they adventure and progress through the story in the world of Celesta!
The campaign would take place in the Empire of Celesta, where ten High Courts rule their own varyingly different states. This is a campaign for those of you who don't mind a little bit of goofy fun and pop culture shout-outs (there's a lot of those, actually).
I'm looking for a small balanced group of three to four players with fun, unique and different backstories, but mechanical D&D experience isn't required! I'm more than happy to help out newcomers with any questions y'all might have. Rules' wise, I'm very flexible, and may allow for certain things should they have compelling enough flavor text (haha).
I'm on UTC --3 and have free D&D slots for Saturday and Sunday mornings, afternoons and nights. The players should preferably use discord or skype voice chats, but we can arrange for a stylized text chats if required.
Anyone who's interested should send me a reply here with their character and what makes them unique! After the campaign is over, or if a lot of you are interested, I'll post campaign guides for this setting for other players and DMs to enjoy!
I have a character set up but not very fleshed out backstory wise as I'm not quite sure about the rules or etiquette of backstory creation. Quick rundown though. The name is Nuktu Ra'aha, a male Aarakocra. Lawful neutral ranger and folk hero. I would love to get some pointers and I am fairly interested in joining in on your campaign. I hope to hear back from you soon.
Backstory creation for you character varies from DM to DM, but I like to think of it as an opportunity for you to think about what your character has been through up to this point. Nothing too overpowered or extraordinary, but rather a reason or bond as to why Nuktu became an adventurer in the first place, you know? Aarakocra's, as far as I can tell value, freedom and liberty to explore the world, and maybe Nuktu became fascinated with the Material Plane. Maybe he came to it by accident, but that's all up to you to decide.
The 'Homelands' section in the Aarakocra race and the 'Creating a Ranger' section in the Ranger class here in the website give you some ideas and questions towards fleshing out your characters backstory and personality. But of course, much like the pirate code, they're to be taken more as guidelines than unbendable rules. I loved your character's initial design, and I keep picturing him shooting arrows at his enemies while gracefully soaring through the air, which I think sounds fantastic!
As a folk hero, you're given plenty of suggestions over at the Folk Hero background section. If none of those interest you, you can make up your own! Folk heroes are renowned amongst the common folk, so maybe Nuktu fell from the sky as a youngling and was taken in by a family of human farmers or maybe he became known as a Robin Hood-esque figure after spending countless years defending the animals and the less fortunate in one of the many forests of Celesta. At the end of the day, it's up to you to decide what direction you want to take with your character, whether you want him to be more of a broody loner, or a charismatic peoples' person, the backstory will definitely have some say in how Nuktu's personality develops.
I have some background on the campaign setting here, for you to get acquainted with and see if you're still interested:
The Empire of Celesta is ruled by ten human houses, headed by the Archdruid of the House of Deréon. Despite its human roots, the Empire welcomes travellers, traders and adventurers of all kinds, and it has garnered a reputation of kind hospitality among those foreigners who chose to call it their home. The Empire spreads out across great part of the continent, ranging from the Chandelier Peaks to the north to the vast Roman Desert to the south. It is, by far, the largest and oldest ruling state in the continent in the present day, towering over the smaller eastern kingdoms that aren't even worth mentioning.
The Empire covers a huge swath of land with many different environments to explore: The Diamond Coast to the west, where port cities and established trade routes are at a constant battle against trickster pirates; the Fey Rift, where time seems to stand still and a dream-like, eerie feeling encompasses all those who travel through the land; the Parid Moors, where night seems to loom over the land in a constance presence, and hordes of undead threaten the borders between these boglands and the Plains of Glory. Across the very center of the Empire lies the Atlantic Grove, a sprawling rainforest where human settlements, so in-tune with the nature that surrounds them, could be easily confused for elven. But there is something uniquely human about the cities there, perhaps the essence of pragmatic engineering and fluid adaptability that isn't seen in the chaotic and confusing wooden labyrinths that are elven settlements.
Thanks for the little tips. I have a better understanding of what kind of backstory I would like to Give Nuktu now. So a quick story after a day of thinking about it, I'd like to say he was born into a family of humans. He was found along a river bank as an egg by an old couple and when hatched, was raised by them. He has a soft and quiet demeanor normally but outside in the wilderness, when his blood gets pumping, he loses his cool composure. More willing to take risks and he becomes a little reckless just to keep the adrenaline flowing a little longer. After slaying a small band of orcs who looted his small village and returning what little treasure they actually looted back to the town, he desires to spread his wings and go out, a deep desire to be no longer restrained to the place he calls home. And that's where the adventuring for him starts I suppose. First backstory written up! And I do like the way the campaign looks I can work over both skype and discord but I do prefer skype a little more simply because I know it much better. Anyway, hope to hear from you again soon!
Fairly new to being a player and little experience being a dm but I would enjoy being a player with my new character,
Name: Stonewell
Race: Earth Gensai
Class: Monk
Background: Stonewell had recently wandered away from his hometown in search of knowledge that he could bring back for his students. He is a teacher at heart even if he isn't a very good one. But he wishes to one day be able to save a life with his teachings, and make up for what his old friend could not.
He's kinda a gentle giant character, with a bit more to him to make him more mine. Hope this was god enough to be looked over :)

Hey Ten!
Man, I loved it!! Really gave Nuktu an interesting take! In regards to skype, I don't see any problem with using it; your character's really piqued my interest. Now we just have to see if more players arise :D

Hey thesavagejs!
I really like the concept you got going on here for Stonewell-- its simple yet interesting and intriguing-- he sounds lovely!!
Are you available on Skype and/or Discord? If you and @Ten50 are in, we'd need just one or a couple more players to get the ball rolling!
I would love to join the group that's already brewing :)
Altough I've played the game before (let's assume I'm a newbie though), haven't really finished a campaign due to groups dissolving, this is my first time playing/applying to an online campaign too.
Discord is great :) and Sundays are cool too.
Name: Daelar Rall
Race: Wood Elf
Class: Paladin
Background: A a former soldier for the Holy Order of Mithis Gaan, Daelar is an outcast who left his life in the Order when he discovered a horrible secret about the holy army. Now, on the run from Mithis Gaan, Daelar ventures east seeking refuge and a new start in the vast lands of the Empire…
Loved it, felt it, lived it! You three seem like you'd make a great, diverse group! Now we only need to see if @thesavagejs will reply anytime soon, haha.
I am literally just starting out in D&D and have a wood elf rogue. I am not sure what time slot this group would be playing, I am in the Central time zone in the US, have next to no experience in D&D other than watching streams of games. Taking a bit of a leap into trying to play.
Name: Mistwind Slyvanth
Race: wood elf
Class: Rogue
Chaotic Neutral
Background: after studying history and developing my stealth and deception skills within my village, I setout to learn the history of the world and further improve my abilities in stealth and deception.
would be cool to learn and play with people, i can see if I can get my skype or discord up and running, provided I can remember my login.
this sounds very cool. i have a character that i've just created that i'd love to play with in this group. i've come back to D&D recently, and i'm relearning things all over again. i'm also trying to DM a group for my kids and their friends, so i spend more time doing that than playing.
My character is Talas, a wood elf tempest cleric with a bit of a temper issue. For him righteous anger can easily bleed over to rage and he's constantly faced with that whole staring into the abyss thing. I'm still fleshing out the worship angle for this cleric. i know that Thor is an acceptable deity in 5e (right?), but i was thinking of someone who had a bit of an edge like the Morrigan. i don't know if that is an appropriaqte substitution or not.
anyway, i hope you still have a slot open for sunday nights. i'd love to play.
I've sent you all some PM's regarding the Campaign, and will be awaiting the responses. From there, we'll see how the group will closes out and how we'll start the campaign!
I'm new to this site and I would love to try this online. My character is a female Bard named Sylvaran she is a wandering bard in search of adventure and tales along with the promise of treasure.
Hail and well met, adventurers!
