I've been going to Adventurers' League games for the last month or so, which has been good for getting (back) into DnD; the locations might not be the best for you, though, since I think the southernmost site is at Game Empire in Clairemont. (If it's in range for you, be aware that they do fill up, sometimes by 5:30 or so.)
If you end up putting a non-AL game together, I'd be up for that, too -- Friday nights and weekends might be the easiest time to get people.
In campaigns I've played in, sessions last as long as everyone in the group is able to stay. (That's part of why I tend to prefer Friday nights or weekends; there's the option to stay a bit longer without losing sleep if you don't want to end in the middle of something exciting.) Adventurers' League games usually run 4 hours, which to me seems like a pretty reasonable session length. And yeah, finding someone who can put in the time to DM is one of the trickier parts of putting together a game.
Hello, I live in San Diego and my son and I want to get into DnD. Is there anyone who has any events/gatherings in the southern region of SD?
I will need help finishing my champ and my son already has a preset champ that he can work with.
Thanks to all of you in advance!

Thanks for the information.
If I put one together myself I would need to find a DM, since I currently don't have any of the stuff yet besides a partly filled out champion sheet.
How long does a session generally last?

New Player Seeking A Group, if any suggestions. Never played a game, trying to get into it.
