I’m a Dungeon Master who is currently looking for a group of 5 to 7 players for a Discord campaign to play an old school D&D campaign using an early edition of the rules. No rulebooks will be necessary to play in this campaign as I will provide everything you need. I am also happy to provide links to the rulebooks on the Dungeon Masters Guild website for anyone who wishes to purchase PDF or hard copies for their own reference.
The Basic D&D ruleset we will be using is the D&D Red Box Basic ruleset published in 1983 and written by Frank Mentzer, also known as BECMI (Basic, Expert, Companion, Master, Immortal). The game was released in five sets, each a different colour and was designed to teach players the rules across these five stages, so it’s a great way to learn the game as a group one stage at a time.
This is nostalgic old school Dungeons & Dragons and is fun for both experienced and none experienced players, but also a great way for new players to learn the game as the ruleset is fun, streamlined and easy to understand.
Although the rules are simple, old school D&D is challenging (think Dark Souls in D&D form) I will not be fudging dice rolls either, so death is a real thing in this campaign! Join at your own risk! But where there is the fear of death there is also reward!
So why would you want to play an early edition of the rules you might ask?
Well here are a few reasons that I like it:
* Basic D&D is a simple system with mechanics that are easy to understand and are a great introduction for new players.
* Basic D&D compliments later editions, making it easy to move into them if desired.
* Creating characters in Basic D&D is very straight forward, simple and streamlined and can be done much faster than in 5th Edition.
* Basic D&D is no walk in the park, it’s very challenging but the system forces players to work together and actually learn how to be smart and strategic in order to survive in the wilderness or underworld.
* Basic D&D is nostalgic. It’s what this game was like in its golden age during the 80s and you can see how the game has evolved since then.
* The game is designed to be learnt in five stages adding more and more complexity as the campaign progresses
Sounds good right? So when are we gonna play?
We will be playing either weekly or bi weekly on Discord on Monday night at 7pm until 10pm GMT. You must be at least 18 years old and be available at the above allotted time. If you are not available at that time then please do not request to join this campaign.
What you will need to play?
* A laptop or computer that can run discord
* A reliable headset with a microphone
* Your imagination
I will provide access to everything else you need to play including PDF links to the required rules and form fillable character sheets. The discord server also has a little solo adventure transcribed directly from the original rulebook onto Discord to show beginning players the mechanics of the game.
If this sounds like something you’d be interested in then feel free to send me a message with the following information so that I know you have read and understood this post.
“I can confirm that I am available to play at 7pm until 10pm on a Monday evening in the GMT time zone.”
“I can also confirm that I have a laptop or personal computer with a suitable microphone and headphones and will not be relying on a phone or tablet to play.”
Please also provide the following information on you message:
Your Name:
Your Age:
Your Location:
Have you used Discord before?
Your experience with D&D (have you played before? If you haven’t, what made you interested in playing? If you have player before, what editions have you played? was it in face to face or online? If online what did you use to play?)
Have you heard of basic D&D?
If you have any questions then please feel free to ask.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Adventure's I've published on DMs Guild: The Temple of Bhaal - A gothic horror themed "one-shot" single session adventure for 1st level characters. The Palace of Evendur - An ethereal fairy tale "one-shot" single session adventure for 1st level characters.
Hello! Found this request and decided to give it a go.(Though I do have a problem I would have to discuss with the DM if possible.) That said,here is some basic trivia and tidbits about me :
I'm known as Gummy on Discord,but you may refer to me as Marco,I'm turning 18 this Saturday,so I would make for a good fit even if I'm more on the younger side,and have had about 7 months of experience with D&D 5E. I also play Pathfinder with a group of online friends on Fridays.
I'm based in Europe (GMT+1) and have quite some experience with Discord and Avrae...setting everything up wouldn't be a problem. In fact, every single one of the campaigns I was (and currently am) involved in took place over Discord or Roll20. I have respectively played as a Rogue/Sorcerer Halfling, Human Fighter and Fire Genasi Wizard (the latter in a Forgotten Realms campaign with an amazing DM). I haven't played a face-to-face game yet, but plan on DMing a little campaign for my brother and cousins with a setting I am working on...so advice and criticism would be much appreciated! I was introduced to the game by a friend and seeing it mentioned on many TV shows or videogames. Of course, being the massive RPG fan I am, I immediately fell in love with it, especially for the creative aspects involved in defining a character and worldbuilding.
I have heard of both basic D&D,as well as AD&D and a small amount of 3.5 (I think,not too sure on what system was in use at the time) through games like Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale. The knowledge mostly came from these sources,as well as the characters playing it in a few episodes of Stranger Things,if I'm not mistaken.
And I would say that's about it. My only real questions would be : "What type of world will the characters be moving in ?" as well as "Do you plan on this being a long- term campaign or a quick one to get players accustomed to the 1st ed. system?"
Hope to be hearing more from you soon! The material-sharing aspect sounds really cool and I'm definitely eager to jump in! If you want to know more,feel free to PM me and I'll give you my Discord tag. ^^
