On-line play involves all players signing on to a common game server; two popular examples are Roll20.net and Fantasy Grounds. Everyone gets on a group voice chat; Discord is a popular tool for that. Then you can all talk to each other while the DM runs the game through the server. Is that what you were asking?
me and my wife are new to this how does this online group thing work?

It is! Thanks Geoff! It's hard to find players IRL, and the players where I am are...limited. So I figured I'd look into this website!!
I host maps and text on roll20. We do voice chat on Google Hangouts. Tue to Fri, 9am EDT. Wednesday is level 1. You could join.
