I've had a little experience with in-person D&D, but now I'm looking to try online. However, I can't use voice or video, only text. I've got a fairly flexible schedule, and I'd prefer group members and DM to be 18+ and LGBT+ friendly.
I've never done this before so we'd be making it up as we go along.
I created a Discord server. I don't have any experience with Roll20. Maybe we get a few people together, decide on a party composition, decide on a time, roll up characters, post the characters on the server, meet, have a couple combat and role-playing encounters and see how it goes. Even if it's only one or two people at first we can adjust the storyline to accommodate new people. I'd describe the scene, players would type in questions for DM, reactions, etc. Might be slow at first but, meh.
Like I said, I've never done it this way, so we'd all figure it out together. To my mind, the point is to roll dice, hack and slash, cast spells, do some goofy role-playing, have a laugh, not make anyone feel crappy about themselves.
Suggestions? -- Michael
PS: I have profound hearing loss so I need to see people's faces if we are doing Discord with audio. Obviously, text only negates the need for lip reading. That's why I'm trying this out.

Consider paying for a text-based game for a quality experience. I am an experienced text-based game master, and here's my game.
G'day, I recently made a DnD server for everyone to join. From beginners to veterans players and DM'S.
