I've been wanting to get into D&D recently, and it all seems very fun. But, it also seems rather expensive for me. So I was wondering, do I really need a battlemat or Miniatures to play?
Last time the DM forgot to bring the miniatures, so we used an excel presented on the TV. The other time we used scratched paper. If your imagination is vivid enough, never mind the accessories.

No, it isn't necessary.
you can use anything you have sitting around. You need to purchase almost nothing to play DnD.
Don't have miniatures? Use coins or legos or clay literally anything.
Don't have a mat? Use a table.. and inch is 5 feet in game space. You can use string or pipe cleaners to measure distance.
As long as your DM knows the rules and your players have character sheets you are good to go. Mini's and matts are just icing on the cake.
