This change plus the month delay in the alt cover for the PHB means I’m cancelling my pre orders now.
Query: what happens to 5e spells that were bought using the old a la carte purchasing option? Will we still have access to those? Or, I'm assuming, they will be lost too? In which case, why should I buy anything else on this platform if it will be taken away on a whim? I am guessing that a refund won't be offered...

Forcing us to learn and adapt to the new rules when many of us have years long campaigns under the 2014 ruleset is, frankly, ridiculous. You're forcing us to relearn spells, feats, proficiencies and much more. It should've been left optional. It's as simple as adding a Legacy toggle. Now we need to add our old spells as homebrew?!
I'm getting that awful chill up my spine when companies just disappear when the noise gets loud. Rug pull incoming? Come on, read the concerns and get a response addressing them, quickly. The community is swelling with too much anger right now. We're coming up with better solutions than WOTC and DDB right now. Not a good look.

I've read most of this thread and I'm still deeply confused on some particulars re: existing legacy character sheets on DDB.
Let's use my 7th level hexblade warlock as an example. Created, of course, using 2014 rules. Some questions:
What happens to the character sheet on whatever date in September the switch is flipped? Does it remain exactly the same, since it was created prior to the 2024 PHB, or do parts of it get updated?
What happens to spells and invocations that this character has chosen that are NOT in the 2024 PHB?
Do the spells from 2014 that are updated and included in 2024 automatically changed for this character, or do they remain the legacy versions since the sheet was made using 2014 rules?
What happens with this character since its using a patron not available in the 2024 PHB?
the stuff that will change are your spells if they are reprinted in the new book and if you want to use the old ones the devs said go remake them all in homebrew. as for your subclass/class? nothing on that should change unless you manually change it.
So true. I can handle incremental mistakes when it comes to rules or classes, but this breaks their site. Hoo boy. I'm with you that I've not had a lot of faith in their decisions but this is kind of the last one they'll get to make, imo.
if these changes to the spells and items go through i see no point in staying on the site or buying else anymore since it wont stay the same ever and their response if we want the content we paid for is it "homebrew it" why not just homebrew all the paid for content then? at least that they havent taken away YET

I paid for my 2014 PHB years ago, plus 98% of the other books. Eliminating parts of the book I paid for is unethical, basically theft and diabolical. My group is currently playing DotMM, a 5e adventure module, and only on level 6. Now we are forced to use new spells and the magic items in the module will be changed. What the hell?!
WotC and D&D has become so out of touch with the community and it feels like you are purposely and continually irritating the DMs and players that love this game. Why do you continue to poke the bear?! I was on the fence about buying the 2024 books. I'm not anymore. I won't but any of them.

I totally agree. I certainly hope the noise is making them really come up with the appropriate response, and that is the reason for the radio silence. My trust is just about broken, anyway but the best they could do is give me a reason to still keep my ongoing campaign on their site and reverse this decision. The issue right now is the urgency they are making me rush to a different platform. I'd like a few weeks at least to make it seamless for my players.

My understanding from reading the change log is, the sheet will be automatically updated to reflect 2024 rules (e.g. Heroic Inspiration, updated condition descriptions, new exhaustion rules, new action descriptions etc ) and any links or tooltips will be repointed to the 2024 versions. You will still have the 2014 warlock (Legacy), with 2014 Hexblade (no 2024 equivalent anyway), with 2014 invocations (since I believe they are a part of the class so should be Legacy as well).
Any spells or items you have chosen will remain chosen but they will be replaced with their 2024 versions
This should've been done in reverse. You have a perfectly established 5e system already in place and a new and widely untested 5.5e that you're rolling out; you should be adding the tab to opt in, not opt out.
With this one update, you've set back every 5E player that doesn't want to use the new system and essentially made it much harder to use the 5E content. Telling us to copy and paste 'old' content as homebrew is like telling every fifth edition player to pick up the slack that you dropped; there should simply be a 2014 and 2024 tab to swap between the two rulesets.
So I cannot use Spells I PURCHASED on a website that is supposed to support our ability to play games?
Are all the spells I own from books I paid for going to be in their 2024 versions or will I have to buy a whole new book to access them?

I'm coming here to at least add my voice in that the 2024 thing is crap, I won't be buying the new 2024 books (Physical or Digital). Now that D&DBeyond has forced the 2024 rulesets on all the characters I will be cancelling my subscription (again) as well. This change has practically ruined my campaigns which are using the 2014 rules, and now we have to go back to paper-and-pencil. I am displeased that they chose to go this direction. WotC didn't learn their lesson from last year.
This is my feeling too. If this is the direction they are going I don't see myself renewing my master tier subscription or any subscription at all honestly. Very disappointed.
Really irritated by this change. I'm not a fan of the new rules and I planned on piecemealing some things from the new 5.5 into my 5e play. Probably will be canceling my DM subscription and going back to paper sheets or another digital character sheet system. Really hope you guys take the feedback and add a toggle.

Today, when you create a character, the first page that you are presented with is this one:
If they could simply make something similar instead of a toggle, not even the legacy badge would be necessary to be visible.
Just let the people creating the character decide if they want to use 2014 or 2024 rules right after they click "Create a New Character".
Not a toggle in the home settings of the sheet, but an option before character creation.
If a user chooses to create a 2014 character, they are presented with the same options that always existed in DnD Beyond, you already HAVE that system.
If they choose to create a 2024 character, they instead go to this new character creation and character sheet designed for 2024.
I can't see a reason for not doing that besides wanting to tire users into adapting for 2024, eventually selling more books. If that's the plan, I do hope it fails miserably.
