to me the simplest explanation is that hasbro and wotc is greedy
i dont feel like its a extraordinary claim just look at their track record for the past few years alone
I really hope that, if Beyond doesn't reverse course on this change (which would be incredibly easy for them to do), a class-action lawsuit comes about. We didn't pay for Compendium-only access of the content, we paid for full use in the character builder and searches.
I do think there's a case here. The question a decent judge would ask is, "What about the person who purchased the 2014 digital books for use with the toolset one day before this change was implemented?" It's a clear breach of contract in that case, and no judge worth their salt would buy the argument that WotC's right to manage, change, and remove digital content (as stated in the ToS) reasonably allows them to effectively revoke a purchased service.
The purchase of digital content includes access to that content within the toolset. They're revoking that access in part. Breach of contract.
Over 1000 replys to this thread within 2 days with the vast majorty of people saying they want to keep access the 2014 books, items and spells they purchased for use with the digital tool set and charactor sheet. The only reply we have had since this thread started seemed to indicate the belief that we are just a vocal minority? (Correct me if I'm wrong)
A great many comments are already saying they will unsubscribe or have already unsubscribed and never buy anymore books on dndbeyond if they go through with the September 3rd update in its current form. The update that will strip us of digital tool access to a great many 2014-2023 spells spanning a number of source books that we have used for years, are currently using and want to carry on using with our current campaigns.
This update WILL also divide the player base as dndbeyond users will have different spells & items to people who prefer to use the original 2014 physical books or sites like roll20.
The only "official" solution offered is them telling us to homebrew the content we are losing ourselves, doing the work for them after we paid for access to that content. As many comments here have pointed out thats simply not possible to homebrew everything we are losing, some have already tried to do that with a couple basic spells and failed. Homebrew won't fix the fact it will break many subclasses and subclass features that are tied to certain spells. RIP to all the Circle of the Shepherd Druids out there and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
After September 3rd you will find out just how vocal this minority is when hundreds of thousands of people log into the site to play their 2014 ruleset campaigns only to suddenly find out they have lost access to content they paid for without so much as a single email of warning.
Do they not understand that removing access to a chunk of 2014 content on this site will split campaigns as some players still use the 2014 physical books, others prefer roll20 and the ones on Dndbeyond will be FORCED to use 2024 content. It's going to be a bloody nightmare for DM's. It will be easier for DM's and players to leave this site than deal with the problems its going to cause. As it stands now the current changes will lead to a mass exodus of people from this site.
I would rather that didn't happen but thats up to whoever decided on this.
Love the fact that 50 pages in every single person is telling them this is a terrible idea and they're absolutely, 100%, most definitely going to do it anyways because they don't care about their customers at all. Apparently they don't care about going out of business either with how many people are going to cancel their subscriptions over this.
Hey guys, I can't read pretty well without my glasses. Can anyone tell me what's written on this page for the Player's handbook (2014) product details?
Not sure. My prescription is kinda bad, but it almost seems to say "breach of contract."

One more Ugly thing Beyond did is - Big sale not so long ago. Imagine Doing a sale on 5e content and then after a bit telling all the people who bought the books on sale that your books are WORTHLESS! We got you! Ha Ha! You thought you were buying stuff for cheap and will be able to use! Well guess what! You`re not! Ha! Now so long sucker! Your money is now ours!
This is inaccurate. The 2014 stuff isn't going away. Some character sheet functionality is being updated to 2024 but all the 2014 stuff is still fully useable outside of DDB AND most of it is still useable in DDB. It's compatible with the 2024 update.
Toolset content is explicitly part of what was purchased during the sale. That is now being removed. It is an outright lie to say that "The 2014 stuff isn't going away".

No, it's an outright lie to say it is going away. Even using your definition, only part of it is going away, which is exactly what I said. You have no standing to call me a liar.

If you prefer, saying "The 2014 stuff isn't going away" is a totally misleading statement to imply that you can continue using the 2014 rules, to the point that anyone reading it would feel lied to.
In actuality most of the "2014" stuff is being removed or rendered unusable, and it will be impossible to play under 2014 rules.
I did not pay several hundred pound to not have access to the content I bought. From what I am reading we still have access to our content in compendiums. but its not a clear indication that we will be able to use this on character sheets, if this is the case I will cancel my Subscription immediately and Boycott WOTC.
I don't get why some people are so eager to pretend we're not losing so much content, and specifically content we've bought and is still being advertised and sold.
I'm fine with people being happy with the new content. I'm fine with people who don't care which rules they use. But for those of us who want to continue using the 2014 rules, as they have repeatedly assured us we could, we are having that content, and therefore use of the DDB toolset, removed from us. With almost no notice too.

Again, that's completely inaccurate.
If I make a new character on 9/3, I'll be able to pick a 2014 class or a 2024 class, so classes didn't go anywhere.... I'll be able to pick a 2014 subclass or 2024 subclass so subclasses didn't go anywhere.... I'll be able to pick 2014 feats or 2024 feats so feats didn't go anywhere.... I'll be able to pick a 2014 species or a 2024 species so those didn't go anywhere either. All that content that was purchased is COMPLETELY accessible.
Furthermore, if I bought adventures, they're still accessible, the monsters from those adventures are still accessible, the player options from those adventures are still accessible.
The ONLY things that are not accessible according to the changelog are a subset of things that are being updated to the 2024 versions, namely spell descriptions and rule definitions.
So tell me again how I'm a liar when I say that you have access to nearly everything you purchased during the sale.

So I will need to HB, hundreds of spells and almost a thousand Magical items to utilise the content in character sheets? not being obnoxious generally curious.

Some of the spells are completely changed in function. There's a number of builds that don't even function as intended any more under the new spells. There's no logical argument to say those are the same spells, even if they have the same names. If the new descriptions were simply incorporating errata, sage advice, etc. or cleaning up the descriptions to make them simpler, you'd have an argument to make here, but you don't.

thing is if you pick a 2014 warlock and you get your invocations you will receive the 2024 spells and currently there is no way to homebrew the spells in to the invocations, so there will be no way to play a pure 2014 warlock therefor the class is broken in the since that they said we would be able to play our 2014 characters. this is all according to the sheets on beyond but thats what we all payed for and if we only wanted access in the compendium there used to be a way to buy books that way for a heavy discount. but they removed that because they knew this change was coming
There might be a bit of a Catch-22 in that if WotC both enforces it's copyrights in prohibiting copying of 2014 content directly into Homebrew, then they can't argue that Homebrew provides a means by which a customer can use their toolset with the digital books that the customer purchased. But I'm not a lawyer. That said, I've worked on a SW project that provided database information to customers, and the first thing we did was figure out how to make sure the customers had access to the version and features of the data that they had purchased, and not access to that which they had not purchased, because F*CKING DUH, if you're selling data, you provide the data you sold (and there were excellent legal reasons for doing so). Also ironically, as I've been checking with my various gaming groups, I can't cancel my subscription at this point - there's too many folks relying on it, and the consensus seems to be "ride it out until we switch systems" (that's fine - it renewed in May, and maybe in 9 months or so they'll fix things). Also anecdotally, the master DM at the local game store (organizes about a dozen ongoing campaigns with various DMs) announced her retirement from D&D this weekend. Coincidence, I'm sure.
