Calliope rapidly taps Carzi on the shoulder three times, then looks to her with wide eyes and a 'shush' gesture. Once she's sure that her crewmate is going to be quiet, she points to the creature in the distance. Once she's had a second to look, Calliope crouches down into the grass, tugging on Carzi's sleeve to get her to do the same. She keeps an eye on the beast, hopeful it will fly away without noticing them, but pulls the bow from her back and nocks an arrow just in case.
The creature slowly stands to its full height. Before you is a human male--albeit undead--donning leather armor and carrying two daggers, one on each hip. His face is covered entirely by the gold funerary mask. Unable to read any expression, therefore, from his face, you rely upon its body language, which unfortunately says nothing. The Returned stands there statue-like for several seconds. Eventually, he speaks three words in a dry, raspy tone: "I am lost."
Pherebus shakes his head in dismay. "We are doomed! Nothing good will come of this. The malice and trickery of Phenax is upon us!"
The Returned then speaks again. "Phenax?"
Pherebus draws his shortsword and takes a few steps toward the Returned...
The man catches the coin, rather adeptly you notice. Stepping past him to reach the door grants you a new angle from which to see the beggar and his bundle of possessions as you take one more glance. Protruding from beneath the blanket is the limb of a crossbow. You see it, and the beggar sees that you see it. He quickly raises it, and you can see the ill intent on his face.

Tark nods and leaps into action, ripping the dark-colored mask from the sentry's face. Both of you are shocked to see an entirely expressionless visage, with empty eye sockets and a gaping mouth. You have heard tales of the Returned--those who have found a way to escape the Underworld only to return to the land of the living soulless and purposeless, and on this night you actually have one of these undead creatures in your grasp.
Tark hesitates momentarily, unsure what to do with his blade in light of this new turn of events. Before he can make a decision, the sharp twang of a crossbow reaches your ears. A fraction of a second later, a crossbow bolt sinks into the Returned creature's chest. Taking his eyes and his tongue will no longer be necessary. Someone else--from a relatively close distance--has silenced him for you...
"Sophelia?" responds one of the mage apprentices you've come to know over the past few weeks. "I know the name. I also hear she's eccentric. But, if we're honest, what philosopher isn't?"
He then explains that Sophelia is an old woman who has long been the senior member of the Nyklean school of philosophy in Meletis. "What's your interest in all of this anyway?"
Confident that you've remained out of the winged creature's sight, you narrow your gaze and study the scene before you. You're able to determine that the winged creature is a griffon, and it's attacking something that's obscured by the grass and shrubs. The griffon makes another pass over its target and rises high in the air. You can see that it is circling and preparing for another diving attack.
The griffon's prey, therefore, begins running, and within seconds you hear the sound of pounding hoofbeats. Raising yourself up slightly higher, you can see that a young centaur--wounded and bloodied--is fleeing from the griffon. Unfortunately, it is fleeing directly toward you...
"Mother fu..." Moneo says half under his breath as Pherebus starts to move towards the Returned. "Pherebus! Wait! You know I got your back, but what good comes from killing this thing?" Though he'd rather not fight, he's preparing himself, and adds, "It said it's lost. Let's just find out where it's going, send it on it's way, and dive into one of these barrels."
Turning on a dime, Mekleon unclasps his hammer from his belt and reaches behind his back, coming back with a javelin and whipping at the "beggar" as he charges forward.
Javelin Attack: 18 Damage: 7

Robin smiles to the apprentice, happy someone was already knowing of this person. "So she still is alive, that is a bit of a surprise." Robin says as she places a hand over the pouch with the paper inside of it. "My interest is in Nyxborn creatures." She says. "I recently read a book by her and would like to get some more information from her on that book, and Nyxborn in general."
Grexes is deeply disturbed by the discovery. To employ the undead in such a fashion... it went against everything he had been brought up to believe. He freezes for a moment, the undead corpse relaxing against his chest. With a grace only capable of the leonin, he stands, and boldly peers into the darkness from whence came the bolt.
Calliope nudges Carzi again, this time pointing her bow up at the griffon and waiting for Carzi to do the same. Once the beast is in range and Carzi seems ready, she’ll loose her arrow. Then she skitters sideways in the grass, looking for a new place to crouch low and hide.
Pherebus ponders your advice and lowers his blade. "Very well then. This could be messy whether it lives or dies, I'd like to mention."
He then directs his attention to the Returned, and says, "You say you are lost. Where are you supposed to be?"
It stammers, "I...I...have been ordered to...to..."
Whatever words were to come next you do not know, for the distinct sound of approaching footsteps...or hoofsteps, rather...diverts your attention. You see a minotaur bearing the garb and gear of the Meletian city guard.
Pherebus shakes his head and groans, "Lovely. I'm sure we can easily explain why we're standing on a dock with an escapee from the Underworld."
The beggar emits a loud grunt as the javelin catches him in his side. Able to stand, he rises to his feet with a grimace and pulls the trigger on his crossbow...
Ranged attack: 15 for 6 piercing damage, if successful
Wasting no time to see if his shot is accurate, he sheds the blanket and turns to flee.
"Ah, Nyxborn," replies the apprentice, slightly intrigued. "Some say they have all the qualities of the gods themselves, but in miniature."
He then reiterates that Sophelia is indeed alive before offering a rough description of where the Nyklean school is located in Meletis. "I look forward to hearing about your conversation with her, if indeed you're able to gain an audience with one of the city's great scholars."
Peering down the alley in the direction from which the shot came, you are confident the bolt came from the window that you and Tark had been investigating just moments ago.

Your arrow slices through the sky and finds its target, sinking deep into the upper portion of the griffon's front leg. A moment later, the sharp twang of Carzi's crossbow is heard...
Ranged attack: 14 for 4 piercing damage, if successful
...and the griffon lets loose an eerie scream as it is wounded a second time.
Realizing it faces more than one enemy, the monster flaps its massive wings and climbs high into the sky where it can gain a better view of the terrain below. It seems committed to remaining in the area and continuing the hunt.
The centaur continues in your direction, and you can see the blood and anguish on his face. Thus far, however, you and Carzi remain hidden from his view.
The male centaur is approximately 40' away; the griffon is approximately 300' away

Calliope adjusts her aim to the sky and fires again, hoping the glare of the sun won't skew her shot. And once again, she dives into the brush, moving sideways out of the centaur's path and trying to find someplace else to conceal herself and prepare her next attack.
She curses under her breath as the arrow falls short, arcing a few feet beneath the griffon and landing somewhere distant in the grass. And in her frustration, her path is probably more obvious than she'd like to think...
Attack (advantage from being hidden and disadvantage from long range cancel out): 25 Damage: 6

Move as much as it takes to find a new hiding spot
"Any suggestions for how to gain such an audiance?" robin asks, as the realization that she is not likely going to be able to just walk up and talk to this person. She doubts showing the only remaining page of the book will indeer her to the book's author, as destroying the book was not likely something they would like to hear about overly much.
Once she hears any suggestions the apprentice might have, Robin thanks them and moves out. She decides it is worth heading over and at least asking for the audiance, so heads in that direction.
Seeing the fleeing assassin, Mekleon lowers his horns and begins to run. Slow, at first, but he quickly picks up speed, overrunning the beggar and slashing at him with his horns.
Horns: 26 Damage: 10
