Cerlinde breathes a sigh of relief… “thanks for killing that thing! I hope there aren’t a lot more of them around here! Let’s search this room and then continue on down the hall to the room at the end”
Cerlinde investigation 8
(edit- she’s still too jittery from her experience with the quasit to search well)
Mohdrak stifled a chuckle. 'Well, he would know better than I where the kitchen is.' He followed the cat into the open door.
Following the cat, you fully open the door to enter and find that you are most definitely in the kitchen. The aromas of cooking permeate this room. A large iron stove takes up one wall, and the rest of the room is filled with large tables and racks lined with hanging pots, pans, and cooking utensils. Everything is sparkling clean. As you study your surroundings, you hear a flapping of wings and two small forms land on the nearest table. They bow low before you and ask in squeaky voices, “More honoured guests?! To what do we owe this special surprise? I hope you have more sense than your friend in the gray robe. And how can we be of help to you? Cooking? Cleaning? Mending your clothes, perhaps?”
Cerlinde calls back to Mohdrak in the direction Of the other room —“Mohdrak, we’re heading downstairs.” She then starts going down the stairs, right behind Syd if Syd is ok with that.
Enraptured with the two little widdle creatures before him, Mohdrak failed to hear Cerline's outcry.
'I'm just checking the kitchen.' It was the truth and Mohdrak saw no reason to tiptoe around it. The creatures - Tiny gargoyles? - seemed amicable and wanting to serve. 'Are you the help? Are there more of you?'
A thought emerged from the back of his mind. 'Is the master of the manor in?'
The first of these tiny creatures chirps at you, "Just checking? I certainly hope you'll find it to your liking! I'm Cumin, by the way, and we are indeed the help. We work terribly hard for our masters, although to what end we know not, since we haven't seen them in a very, very long time. I'm afraid we really don't know when they might return." Cumin's squeaky voice trails off pitifully.
Then the second picks up the conversation, "I'm Coriander, what's your name? We've never seem someone quite like you, or as large as you! We're the only two of us, but there are a few of those cats, like the one you followed in." Coriander gestures to a corner of the kitchen, where several small ceramic bowls painted with stylized cats are filled with water and kitchen scraps. The fluffy black cat is there, along with a smaller tabby. The cats are eating from the food bowls and occasionally batting at one another to get the choicer morsels. "There are a few other silly creatures you might run into... DRAGONS!", it exclaims, then falls into a fit of laughter.
Cumin shakes its head while Coriander does little loops in the air while cackling. "Forgive my companion, but I wouldn't worry too much about the dragons. More importantly, is there anything we can do for you? Some bread and soup? A place to rest? Any other questions?"
(Mohdrak can make an Arcana check to see if he can recall any information about these little creatures, if he would like.)
'Oh, it's certainly is impressive.'Mohdrak replied. 'Pleasure to meet you, Cumin and Coriander.'He gave the two small creatures a small bow.
He pondered for a moment what they told him. It seemed like whoever owned the manor has not been around in quite a while. Were they out? Or perhaps dead? Or maybe it was something more mundane like stepping out long ago, getting bonked on the head and forgetting the activation word. Mohdrak had seen first-hand what a good blow to the noggin could wrought, from momentary blackouts to complete changes in demeanour.
'Sorry to hear that. We'll keep an eye out for the master of the manor should we leave.' The minotaur let his eyes wander over the tables to see what was on hand to use. There was a lot of small, delicate looking cutlery that he felt would break if he tried to pick it out. It made sense thought considering the size of the cooks present. He picked up a knife. In his hand it might as well have been a toothpick.
'I don't think dragons would fit inside.' Mohdrak smiled and placed the knife back. 'There is something we could do. I'm here with,' he opened the fingers of his left hand one by one as he counted. 'five others so we'll need to prepare food for six people. Well, make it eight to be safe.'He mentally recalled the others again. 'Ten to be sure.' He put down his backpack and pulled out an apron from among his cook's utensils.
Cerlinde breathes a sigh of relief… “thanks for killing that thing! I hope there aren’t a lot more of them around here! Let’s search this room and then continue on down the hall to the room at the end”
Cerlinde investigation 8
(edit- she’s still too jittery from her experience with the quasit to search well)
Cerlinde, slightly off kilter in her current condition, stumbles into a brazier, knocking it over. As the cinders scatter toward the wall, Syd notices a latern sitting on the ground near one of the corners of the room. Neither of you immediately recognize its unusual design. It has a stylized eye crafted in silver and blue glass around the hole where the light is emitted.
No one discovers anything else of note in the room.

Mohdrak isn't able to summon any additional information on these whimsical creatures at the moment. They do notice him evaluating their pint-sized cutlery and Cumin, somewhat flustered, rushes to be of help. "Ah, master minotaur, you would join us in preparing a feast? Please, we have plenty of supplies and utensils better suited to a being of your size. Maybe not fully scaled, but much better than ours." Cumin points you to a door in the back left corner of the room, which leads to a very well-stocked pantry stocked with sacks of flour, vegetables, preserved meats, and other staples required for the sustenance of the household's inhabitants. Given how long it sounds like Fistandia has been gone, you can surmise that they must be preserved by the magic of this building. In addition, there is a cask of wine and ample cooking utensils for any normal culinary task.
Cumin seems to be somewhat anxious to make a good impression on Mohdrak and finds any items he requires to the best of its ability. Coriander whistles a jaunty little tune while zipping around the room for a bit. Coriander then departs through a door to the right, explaining, "Dining for ten! Best to get the big table ready. Oh, and the fine place settings! How exciting!" It leaves the door ajar as it exits, through which you can glimpse a well-appointed dining room.
(Please let me know if you'd like to examine the kitchen or pantry more thoroughly.)
Cerlinde almost trips over the brazier and sends it clattering, then exclaims... “Oops! Oh I’m sorry. I’m afraid I’m not fully recovered- that little fiend gave me quite a shock. Ollezall- are you still detecting magic? Curious about this brazier and this lantern.”
“Don’t forget to also look at the Lantern. It might be magical as well. I can also cast that spell if we need it later. We should be on the lookout for more such creatures, if she made a habit of summons of that kind. Perhaps the red-skinned thing we saw with the apprentice was one she summoned?”
Cerlinde says, finally starting to have a bit more of a normal tone to her elegant elven-accented voice.
Ollezall senses on the brazier residue from the many conjurations performed in this room over the years, but can determine that the brazier itself is not magical.

"The the room and equipment are used for conjuration, but the equipment itself is not magical. Perhaps you might recognise some of the residue on the Brazier if conjuration magic is something you're skilled in, but it's all Zemnian to me" Ollezall will say.
Ollezall will make motions towards the door to explore down the hallway.
To Cerlinde " It takes me a little longer, but I can cast detect magic as a ritual so it doesn't cost me any magical energy; I'm not sure if wizards can do the same with your grimoire or not. If everyone doesn't mind waiting, it might save needed magical prowess for when we need it if I conduct a ritual instead of you using up your magic" Ollezall will offer.
Syd finds that there is a small amount of oil remaining in the lantern. While lit, it casts enough light to easily illuminate the relatively small room they are in. While nothing is noticeably different in looking around the brightened room, Ollezall can detect the presence of Divination magic as he is bathed in the latern's light.
"Take that lantern with us Syd; the light coming from it has an aura of divination magic. "
(Is the glass of the lantern tinted?)
Following behind Syd, Ollezall will continue down the hallway; making the gestures and uttering in prayer, Ollezall will conduct the ritual for detect magic once again as he is walking.
(Here is a picture of the lantern that you have discovered. When either the occasion arises that makes its function obvious, or you have time to take a short rest and experiment with it, I'll provide the rest of the details.)
The party reaches the easternmost room at the end of the hall and opens the door without incident. Entering the room cautiously, you find that smells of alcohol and brine permeate this room. Glass vessels large and small stand in rows on the floor and tables, ranging from one foot to six feet tall. Inside each vessel is the body of a creature floating in clear liquid. One four-foot-tall container at the far end of the room is missing its lid and has no occupant. While it is difficult to make out the specific creatures in each vessel from your current vantage point by the door, you can see that one near to you contains what looks like a hideous hybrid of lizard, bird, and bat, roughly one metre in length.
Ollezall can recall from browsing through Fistandia's memoirs in the study that she considered herself to be a knowledgeable natural philosopher, and collected many rare specimens to study. This room seems to contain those of the rare and aberrant variety.
Mohdrak gave an encouraging nod to the two little ones. He still had no idea what they were but they began to grow on him. He normally cooked by himself but he could envision himself leading a kitchen like this. It would be good practice.
'We're cooking for ten so we best keep it simple.' He clipped the apron behind his neck and back with the cloth strips. It was a different design as his horns could not fit through a normal one. Though lovingly kept, it started to show signs of usage. Perhaps it was time to go look for a new one.
He opened up cupboards and drawers and gathered everything he needed to make something from scratch. The easiest meal to make was to use the cured meat and sauté it over the fire. He did remember to also sauté vegetables in a different pan. He could not recall any of the others claiming to be a vegetarian but it did not hurt to be sure. Besides, they could use the greens to grow a little more.
'Is there a dish you wish to make?'Mohdrak asked Cumin and Coriander. 'Something of a local specialty or that you enjoy eating?'
As he moved around the kitchen doing the delicate dance of cuisine cooking, Mohdrak took mental note of all the foodstuff and drinks to estimate how much days they could last in the manor without having to ration everything.
