Hearing the multiple howls, Day backs away from the body while putting the envelope in his bag. He fishes through a pouch tucked into his robes and pulls out a small piece of leather. After muttering a few arcane words he touches the now glowing leather to his chest, casting mage armor. “We may want to move away from this corpse, we seem to not be the only ones following it’s scent.”
Oron grins a bit before backing up more. "Yeah... As much as I'm itching to fight something, I want to make sure I wake up the next day. Let's go." He then motions everyone who did follow him to the body, back to the road.
Ruel nodded in ascent, "I agree we should make our way towards the direction of the tracks, if there is a pack of man eating wolves in the area, then we may be able to rid the citizens of them and if there are too many we may have allies to aid in our fight. But we may have to stand before then."
Ruel's thoughts went back to the letter on the corpse there was people to save it was his duty to lend aid, assuming he got out alive from the current situation.
As Sirron watched the treeline he noticed something moving through the trees, initially he thought it was a member of the small group that had gone to examine the source of the smell but when he noticed that it was headed towards the smell of death rather than towards the rest of the group he quickly glanced towards the others hoping that someone else had seen it as well. Of course it could have been his imagination playing tricks on him but if it wasn't then that meant the others might be in danger.
"Did anyone else see something just then?" He questioned before taking a step back. Although he was worried about the others at the moment he still wasn't entirely sure if what he'd seen was real or not.
You hear snuffling noises, then spot a pair of yellow eyes. A massive horse-sized wolf with long, bony spikes running down it's spine regards you with suspicion from the trees, before turning away to head towards the corpse. Seems like you got out of there just in time.
(If you would like to try and identify the creature, roll Nature or Survival.)
You recognise it as a dire wolf. They usually roam in family packs of five or more, and are known primarily for two things. Their keen hearing and smell, and their habit of working together to get an advantage over their prey.
Mavis moves away from the corpse with the group. While he keeps his sword pointed to the ground, he grips the handle tighter as his eyes catch the yellow eyes of a massive wolf sniffing at the rotting body. He keeps his silence, trudging along the trail with the group and stewing in shame for not remembering that wolves always travel in pack. The group will surely not survive facing such massive wolves despite their number advantage. It seems that his test has begun, and he would have failed already if not for the warning of those that travel with him.
'I have never seen a wolf with such size,' Mavis commented as soon as they are far enough away from the wolves and the dead body. 'If this is a glimpse to the danger of the land, I fear we may face greater threat ahead of us. Perhaps we should increase the pace slightly just to ensure the wolves will not catch up to us when they are done with the corpse.'
{I assume Day shows the group the letter found with the corpse and reads the content. Will Mavis know what a vampire is?}
{If the content of the letter hasn't been shared, then Mavis will just keep to his silent pondering}
Sirron nodded slightly when he heard Mavis' comment about the size of the wolf, although he had never seen a wolf that had looked like that before. "Neither have I, although in all honesty I've never seen a wolf that looked like that either." He replied before motioning towards the direction the beast had gone. "I guess that's what we should keep our eyes open for in the future... Why am I not surprised. Yeah if we put a good distance between ourselves and the wolves then we might actually have a chance at surviving. Hopefully that isn't what all of the wolves here look like, because that looked like something out of a nightmare."
Half an hour's walking brings you to high stone buttresses looming grey in the fog. Huge iron gates hang on the stonework. Dew clings with cold tenacity to the rusted bars. Two headless statues of armed guardians flank the gate, their heads now lying among the weeds at their feet. They greet you only with silence. As you approach, the rusted gates swing open and shut behind you, their hinges groaning. The dirt road here is replaced with cobbles and is clear of fog, letting you see the horizon. But the fog thickens along the sides, as if there's something in the trees that it is trying to hide.
Remembering the tales about vampires that he has heard, Mavis brings his thoughts to the other.
'This village, Barovia, may have more information on the matter,' Mavis says. 'However, the content of the letter worries me more than the wolves and how we got here. Vampires are notoriously dangerous, capable of many great feats that can seems otherworldly. I do not know if it is possible for a vampire to transport us here, but that is surely possible, correct? Especially if what the letter said proves true that there exist centuries old vampire ruling this land.'
As the group makes their way near a massive gate, Mavis looks around, already tense enough with the revelation of a vampire ruling the land, and notices the fog closing in. The way it moves is strange and unnatural to his eyes. He readies his sword and shield once more, hoping that this is just his paranoia acting up, but there is no fault in being prepared.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
" If someone from this village you speak of has information that can help us then that's wonderful." He hums softly as he finally feels comfortable enough to put away his rapier. Although the talk of vampires didn't really sit well with him, if they had been brought to this land by a centuries old vampire then did that mean it had been watching them before hand? As he thought about it more he shivered slightly and dug his nails into his palms. "Although I'd like to think that it isn't possible I'm starting to wonder if that is indeed the case... but why would a vampire want to bring a group of strangers into their domain. Well other than to use them as a possible food source?"
As the group passes through the massive gate and it closes behind them Sirron winces. "Is that something that happens normally or..."

Once Oron got back on the road, Melantha hurried position themselves behind him.
Their longsword, for a second, had a flick of green fire appear.
...don't worry. The fire didn't touch the Leonin's fur.

Day isn’t familiar with many animals from the Material Plane but he’ll try to remember reading about a beast of this nature.

(He would. They're fairly common in tales spread by bards.)

In Melantha's backstory, they had many encounters with this one Drow vampire.
Melantha's ears flicked up as Day read the word 'vampire' in the note.
"Ehh? So this type of vampire doesn't keep to themselves...that letter didn't mention what kind of vampire this is, though."

You spot a path deviating from the main road, and realise the fog is not trying to hide the path, but flowing from it instead.
You hear the panicked voice of a young girl, calling "Thorn? Thorn?"
