Lia spends a good part of the day picking apples. She does not encounter the halfling woman often, except during a brief lunch break. The halfling woman pointedly ignores her as she walks by but otherwise says or does nothing of note during their encounter. The guards are noticeably more lightly staffed today, spending a fair amount of time talking with each other casually instead of standing guard. There is a clear excitement about the coming festivities. In the late afternoon, there is a clear gap in the guards' attention and many of the pickers have either retired for the day or moved far from the possible escape location on the north side of the orchard...

Xev'ren has a brief opportunity to leave the house when Weaver Usi publicly asks for someone to run to the market for the cook. Xev'ren offers...

...but them mistress is clearly not amused. "No," she says, her eyes narrowing at her butler's eagerness. "I think not. Go help the lizardkin tidy the parlor again."
Later in the afternoon, she is about to step out and asks again for a volunteer, this time to deliver a message to her friend south of the palace...
Yes, that is a perfect use of the lucky chalk. Bayut's skill checks are at disadvantage today, though. Still, you rolled so horribly that you can't do worse, really. Bayut has been running hard all day and this diversion puts him over time. The scholarly drider in the alley glares at Bayut for his impertinence but clearly finds the papers more pressing and does not punish him, nor chase after him.
But Bayut is exhausted when he returns to his stables, late. Dulzi is manning the hourglasses as his runner returns. "You know the punishment, two-leg," says his Weaver. "Half rations tonight. Its been a while since you've been late. Do better tomorrow or it'll be worse for you."
As an early supper is served to the messengers, Bayut indeed has not enough to fill his belly tonight. Late in the day, usually after the stable has stopped delivering messages, Dulzi calls Bayut forward.
"Deliver this to Eastgate. 15 minutes."
This is normally plenty of time but Bayut is [Tooltip Not Found] (two levels, speed is halved). He is not sure if he has enough in him to get there and back in time...

Zanvoril's first time in the mines is, thankfully, not too strenuous. A human woman named Gritte is tasked with showing him the ropes. The conditions are dangerous, but the slaves working the mine have many clever ways to ensure their own safety. They are mining for silver here and have been working on a two veins, one deep in the rock but only slightly lower than the entrance and another well below the entrance just 100 yards into the mine. A ladder of handholds is carved in the rock descending more than 450 feet to the vein. The conditions here are cold and cramped and there are fewer miners than the location higher up.
"You can mine either location as you like," Gritte says. "You just haul your allotment like the rest of us, okay?"
Zanvoril is given a crude helmet, a pair of leather gloves, and a pickaxe, well-worn. It's point is arguably little more effective than the handle would be at breaking rock. Gritte shrugs at his look. "It's shit but it's what we all get," she says. Being down in the deep vein, she decides to try her luck here today, despite it not being her usual spot. With half of the day completed already, Zanvoril has an opportunity to try out his skill on the mine, if he likes, but he won't be held to any target today. Tomorrow will be another story...
Zanvoril takes the gear and cheerfully puts them on following Gritte down to the lower level to mine there. While down there he looks for two things, a small sliver of silver that he can pocket and anyone who looks like they seem trustworthy, particularly someone who looks like they might need a little help.
Gofer Bayut stands tall doing the noble martyr thing I comply. I expect, Weaver, I will be punished, because of fatigue, but I comply.

Xev'ren oversells his disinterest.
"Imryll," says Weaver Usi, shooing her off. Sending her on this trip is something of a personal sacrifice and a clear signal that she is aware of what Xev'ren is after.
She leaves without assigning her butler a task.
Another two hours pass before Xev'ren gets a break. He has 15 minutes, which is probably not enough time to run to the sweatshop and back. Getting someone to cover for him will be especially suspicious at this time.

I actually looked the reroll rule up after making the item. You can roll to replace the lowest roll on a disadvantaged roll. This is only useful if your higher roll is a passing one. The inverse is true, obviously, for advantaged rolls.

Bayut sprints to Eastgate, weaving under driders and taking obscure shortcuts that the messengers are typically the only ones privy to. He arrives back at the stable just as the last grains of sand fall in the hourglass. Dulzi nods, satisfied, and waves Bayut back into the stable where he collapses into his bunk and falls asleep.
The next day will be the Festival of Night. Bayut will recover one level of exhaustion, meaning he will have disadvantage from the one level he does have but that will be canceled out by the easy schedule he is expected to keep.

Lia slips out of the orchard easily, making her way through the streets of the outer part of the city like a slave on a task for her weaver. She finds herself on the edge of a sprawling, unfenced farm. She has worked on such a farm once before, being sent on for causing the Weaver running it too much grief. Here she finds a large structure, a barn once upon a time, that is locked with an old, rusty lock. There are some holes high, up by the roof where animals or weather have damaged the old structure. She stands comfortably in the shadows across the street as she thinks of a plan for how to get inside...
Xev'ren rolls his eyes, this is not the day to worry about it. The chance will come or it will not, be patient he reminds himself. He sets about finding tasks to do with his free time, trying to help the other slaves.
(All of the safe houses are inside the city, right? None anywhere he could check out?)
Sorry, I forgot to answer this. There are two located outside of the city. Both are on the east side of the outer city while Zanvoril's mine is southwest of the city
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Lia waits until the coast is clear, then she moves to the barn and climbs up to one of the small holes above. She aims for one that looks like she would be able to squeeze through.
Lia manages to ascend the old barn with some brute strength and clever use of a dilapidated old wagon. In the loft, she finds the wooden floor to be in poor shape but is able to avoid the soft spots easily enough. Creeping to the edge of the loft, she looks down into a barn filled with tools, barrels of soil, burlap sacks, and more. It is clear the space is being used for one of the nearby farms. Thankfully the barn is presently empty. As a useable base of operations, though, it will definitely not work.

"No way," says gentle Lenastor.
"You got a lady waiting for you?" says Koeri. "If you want a tumble, we can have a go right here. No need to put all our lives at risk."
Menetavro seems to seriously consider it, then shakes his head. "I would rather not make your error a parable to add to my collection, Elsol."
Frustrated, he convinces them instead to let him venture out to the outhouse, although they clearly do not trust him after that initial ask.
"Come with me, if you like," he says to Koeri. She takes him up on that offer.
On their way back inside, Elsol instead attempts to lift a steak knife from the dirty dishes at an unattended table. The timing on this is critical, as he has only seconds after Koeri enters their quarters to dash down the hall, claim an item on the exceptionally tall tables the driders use, and dash back, all without being seen.

The ire of his troop settles as the night goes on and the bard lays in his bunk, fuming at the lost opportunity. They have not performed all day. Mevo did not even check on them. He could have left and come back by now. Instead, he will have to wait until after the Festival of Night, unless he can find an opportunity during their very busy day of performing outside the Eight and Two tomorrow.
The eve of the festival ends with only small successes, though they do not all of them know it yet. They wake on the morning of the Festival of Night, prepared each for their respective days. Elsol will be performing most of the day. Bayut and Xev'ren expect to have a much easier day, although not as easy as the day after the festival will be. Lia and Zanvoril can expect a very easy day, putting in only token effort on their tasks.
Messengers, laborers, servants, cooks, and toadies will receive a +1 to skill checks today.
Miners, farmers and foragers, crafters, and clerks make skill checks with advantage today.
Entertainers, gladiators, breeders, and healers make skill checks with disadvantage today.
On the morning of the Festival, a messenger arrives for each of you. Receiving anything as a slave would be remarkable, except the messenger is a small sparrow. It delicately pecks off the string tying the message to its leg. Unrolling the rough paper reveals a short note written in common.
Establishing communication lines. Leave return messages outside your nearest window. Progress? - D
Zanvoril would attempt to season the food again that night, and also try to quietly hand his portion of food to whoever looks like they need it the most. (Yay reborn, no need for food.)
When he gets the message, he writes on the back of it, "Found something shiny, could be useful, will continue efforts to make friends with locals." If it seems practical, he'll wrap the piece of silver in the paper and set it outside his window when no one is looking late that night.
If Lia has something to write with she will put a short note consisting of her scouting of the farm location on the back of the original note. She thinks this is a horrible way to open communications, as it puts everything down in a way anyone could read if they found the notes, and, even more so, the fact she did not have access to paper to begin with.
Master is suspicious, checking on root cellar by sweet shop. Nothing yet.
He quickly goes back to his work. Trying to be the best servant he can be, hopeing his master will forget about his earlier attempts to con his way out of the house.
The miners take the Festival of Night has a very easy day of work. In fact, the short-staffed driders only let a few into the mine at a time, the rest either sorting and crushing ore removed from the mine yesterday or waiting for their turn to do something. As long as they do not flaunt their laziness, the driders ignore anyone not working.
Note, the mine is not a fenced in area as the driders rely on its distance to the city (about half a mile) as wall enough. There is plenty of mining equipment around as well as a a few simple things related to domestic life, such as blankets, flatware, cups, etc.
------------------------------
Bayut has no messages until late morning, when he is tasked with running one to the slave market at the intersection of Glassgate and Eastgate districts on the north side of the city.
------------------------------
Lia has only to rely on the drider's disdain for common and the lack of a watchful eye. She has difficulty in locating a writing fluid, ultimately using a sharpened pigeon feather as a quill and a small pot of thick gravy as ink. The note is written on the back of Whytefern's message and left in a crack in the bricks that is fairly well obscured.
Like Zanvoril, there is little attention to managing the pickers today. A skeleton staff of guards keeps on eye on the crew, but most of the pickers do little to no work, treating the minimal attention as their own holiday.
------------------------------
Elsol, on the other hand, is exceptionally busy today. His day starts relatively late, about an hour before noon, and he and his players set up outside the Eight and Two on a small stage, which they had to assemble. They play a lot of long, elvish ballads. The ones that passing driders especially like are the tragedies. A number of rowdy bar songs go over well too, however.
The bards get a brief break for a meal in the middle of the afternoon. They are sent to the back of the tavern by the outhouse to eat. This may be an opportunity for Elsol to try something, if he cares to. He is tired, though, so any checks will be with disadvantage.

Xev'ren spends the morning ushering visitors to and from Weaver Usi's house. As the afternoon gets on, though, his duties become sparse. Usi becomes busy and somewhat distracted. She leaves frequently, visiting other driders and returning home. Xev'ren can sense multiple opportunities to "run an errand" for the house or opportunities to search the house for something that won't be missed.
