Vars crosses his arms, muttering to himself before saying, "Look, like I said I'm not going to push to go after this treasure. I got this map off an old man I ran into on the bridge after teleporting to the Tower through the painting. He seemed to think it was legitimate, and told me it was a family heirloom. I was skeptical, but it wasn't like he was asking all that much for it so I figured why not just take the offer? All I'm saying is that if we manage to find something here we don't have to give anything back to the blasted ships." He huffs, "But, I'm not going to pretend its a good idea to let Bernard's trail get any colder than it already is. Traveling on the main road might be a good idea, though if I remember correctly we were told that Bernard was heading up the river, so we may want to stick close to the bank if at all possible. I have a feeling we won't get much information from other travelers, unless we run into someone who goes back and forth along this route frequently." He rolls up the map and stuffs it back into his cloak, "If we want to check the key and the door, I'm all for it. And like I said, something tells me we won't get much information from other travelers, so unless we can pick up a trail some other way, traveling the main road might not be much help. If this is a hidden passage, it could be useful in more ways than one."
"Better stay near the river. If we don't see him by the time we reach the fork... Well, then it's in the hands of Tymora. We can burn that bridge when we come to it, though. Metaphorically speaking."
Bjorn takes out the illegible goblin note and holds it up to the sun. "Alright, so we have this mystery note, a couple of mystery liquids, a mystery bomb, and a mystery scroll with a picture of a tower on the tube. Plus we have this Scorching Ray scroll, a floating hairbrush, a light hammer(?), and some coin. And the key to Abernath's teleportation chamber. Is that everything?"
Sparhawk laughs at Bjorn's comment, a deep guttural half-orc laugh. (His sharp teeth and broken nose makes his face look strange. Funny yet kind of disturbing at the same time, as if he was laughing at an inside joke).
"Regardless of Var's suggestion, we can certainly head toward the split in the river." Sparhawk points on the map. "Maybe 30 miles but our bugbear friend may be anywhere before then. Perhaps Frangipani or one of you can indulge my suspicion with this net or tracks. Lets see if it leads to any little fishes with apples in their mouths. (the guy that attacked us with the bandits). Sorsha?"
Sparhawk examines the road forward for any fresh tracks. (Survival check?) 12
Sparhawk can see this road is well traveled and full of recent tracks. People, horses, carts or wagons going in both directions nearer to the camp he can see a set of strange looking, large bird foot tracks that see to vanish when they meet the road.
Sorsha listens to the somewhat chaotic discussion that quickly leaves the topic of cooperation. "So this is it?" She says to Vars looking at his map. "No information other than it would lead you to wealth?"She gives him an incredulous look. "If there is even any truth to what is drawn on this piece of parchment I can see a key, a door and a star but we have no idea what that is supposed to mean right? If we're not even sure what we're looking for and with a map that is most likely not very precise we would be lucky indeed to find the places shown on this map, particularly the star up in Starmetal Hills."She says with a tired sigh. "However, as far as we know Bernard travels up the river Mirar towards Mirabar and the key and the door seems to be on our way to Mirabar so I suppose we could keep a lookout when we pass these areas on the map." She continues, then getting up. "I need to take care of something but I'll be back shortly." She says walking down to the river. "And I don't think there is any point looking for tracks on this road. The road between Luskan and Mirabar is fairly heavily travelled I think and we are just looking for one man that we don't even know whether he is going by foot, coach or horse, or even if he would have travelled this road at all." She adds before vanishing down to the river.
Sorsha heads down to the river, looking to clear her head and refresh herself in the rivers cool waters. As she nears the river she can see it is deep and wide and looks like it wouldn’t be too difficult to navigate, at least this stretch. The morning breeze carries the clean scent of the water to her nose and a sense of calm comes over her. Much closer to her element. She notices some bubbles in the center of the water, they appear to be moving towards the shore. The bubble stop approximately 5’ from shore and the water seems to calm. In a burst the water sprays up and out pops a small, devilish looking creature. It looks like an imp from the story books except it has fun like ridges running down its back and a thicker tail with a nasty barb protruding from its end. His fingers and toes seems to have webbing. Barnacles cover randomly across his skin and some sea weeds dangle from the sides of his head.
It is carrying a small keg or barrel and he points against Sorsha and giggles.
”You! Me founds you quick, he he…The Master sends its regards.”
he holds the little barrel out to Sorsha and says, “ me names Ruhm, Barnacle Ruhm, and I am sent at the Masters pleasure to help..the Master is pleased with your folly…that tentacle debacle was hilarious..”
"Yes, well I thought Slarkrethel might appreciate the tentacle detail at least. And no need asking what you have in that barrel of yours." Sorsha says with a smirk. "How convenient for him to provide me with you though, I hope you are rested because I would need a search up the river of Mirar, looking for something floating, carrying a Bugbear named Bernard. Come back and find me when either you have found Bernard or reached the point where the river reaches Mirabar." She says with a sly smile. "Meanwhile we will be travelling the road to Mirabar. Good hunting Barnacle Ruhm."She says, and motions for the creature to get going.
“ you sure you don’t wants sum?” He asks while shaking his little keg. “ ok more free me” he takes a swig, belches some flame.
” ooooh weeeee, that’s some good stuff right there. No reporting unless I Find BugBernard or town Mirabar…ok. What if’s me finds somethings else or someone’s else? You don’t want to knows?”
"Alright, I will trust you to use your own judgement on what is significant enough to report back. Don't disappoint me Barnacle Ruhm!" Sorsha says with a nod.
"Don't see much with the tracks. Pretty well traveled. Some big bird landed here. I'm comfortable going on road or river. Whatever is better for the group. Some of us are quite comfortable in the water so that makes sense. I just don't want to fall off the boat and find out how deep it is." (He looks up and down his heavy armor.) He studies the two potions (do they look identical, he smells them, trying to surmise what they are for) Can do Investigation 10, or if needed a different roll.
"Nope, but if we grab some branches and wood, we can probably make some on the boat"
"Hey Vars, let me try this new toy out on you." Sparhawk tries to throw the net with one hand as the bandit did. He tosses the net at Vars to see what it does without waiting for his permission.
“I’ve got plenty of arrows…what? Hey!” Vars lifts up his arms in attempt to keep the net from smacking him in the face, taking a single step back as well. Once covered in the net, he pushes it upwards, holding the middle of it up over his head giving the paladin a look as if to say ‘seriously?’. If nothing else happens (apart from him possibly falling on his butt due to the net catching him off guard) he proceeds to pull it off, roll it into a tight wad and toss it back to Sparhawk.
(OOC: Speaking of arrows, I Just realized that I haven’t been keeping track of how many I’ve used. Should I go back through and count how many Vars has used, or just start keeping track from now on.)
Frangipani listens to everyone speak and waits patiently for her captain to return. She is not a major fan of all this not being aboard ship malarkey but awaits orders.
While Vars is wrestling with the net, Bjorn comes over and pulls an arrow from his equipment. In the momentary chaos it seems he has acquired a mighty oaken longbow, tipped in gold and carved with the name Aegweth. He nocks the arrow and experimentally shoots a tree in the middle distance. 15

They smell sort of rancid. ( say what types of testing you do. Smell, taste, touch…on your self or something else, etc..)

“ Ruhm never disappoints..” he lifts his keg in salute, takes another swig and a belch and leaps back into the water. He appears to transform into a squid and shoots off up river, and out of sight

If the net hits you, you will need a strength check to remove it. For arrows just keep track from now on and don’t forget you can take an action post fight to recover some of them.
Giving Barnacle Ruhm a wave as his squid form shoots up the river Sorsha then returns to the camp. "I think we will be able to recieve a scouting report from the river, at least before we reach Mirabar, courtesy of a new friend I found. You will meet him in time." She says, looking around at the others, Vars and Sparhawk seemingly investigating the net while Bjorn is trying out a new longbow, Eberk and Frangipani seeming ready to go. "Alright, I suppose we could keep a lookout for a boat on our way but we will continue towards Mirabar by land for now. Let's take turns to rest in the cart. I don't expect any ambushes but I wouldn't mind if you could take point with those perceptive eyes of yours Vars."She says to the ranger. "Now, let's move out crew!"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Frangipani saluted and moved up to walk at the front of the cart........she had intended to keep a look out but found a very interesting rock on the roadside and spent most of the next hour or so looking at it and spitting on it to make it shiny.

"Not bad!" Bjorn grins, and jogs over to retrieve the arrow. "Mind if I borrow some of those?"
Edit: Vars recognizes Bjorn's archery form to be very amateurish. But the magic bow throws the arrow true regardless.
