"Besides the meteor shower, was there anything of note going on in the village at that time. Doesn't even have to seem related. For example any feuds brewing, or other occurrences. Births, deaths, anything that pales in comparison but still not type in the day to day activities. Mine cave-ins, new discoveries all those types of things." inquires Brix.
Brix insight: 12
Brix listens carefully trying to discern if the man is leaving anything out during his answers.
"Ha only time I hear voices or see things is when i'm four bottles deep!"
He listens to Brix's question and scratches the back of his head as if trying to remember.
"Mmmm not to much of note that I can think of at the time. The Ashford family had a late third son that was deathly sick but Cleric Crelik was able to work a miracle and heal the child. A few of the smaller meteorites hit a fairly close to the temple but no damage was done. About all I can think of"
(You don't feel like there is any attempt to deceive or mislead you)
"Hmmmm....you say pieces of the meteorite fell near the temple. You don't by chance know if the pieces are still about? What I'm wondering is maybe the missing had some kind of contact with the meteor pieces and that's how they are connected." muses the gnome.
The barkeep strokes his chin in thought and replies.
"I think that Crelik took a look at them, and possibly the old hermit who lives at the edge of the village Maggie Stallard. Most of us folk here have no use or interest in such things."
Belnum takes a drink of his ale, then looks at the barkeep inquisitively.
"Did the pieces of meteorite almost hit the temple before or after the cleric assisted the Ashford family? Additionally, when you said 'late third son' are you implying that the son died and was brought back to life? As for this Maggie Stalard, you wouldn't happen to know where we might be able to find them, would you?"
”By late I don’t mean dead, I mean came way after the first two. Jon and James Ashford are already 19 and 18 years old, practically men. The third one, young sam is only about 18 months old. Crelik healed him after the meteorites had hit. He had been trying to heal the boy for a few days before with no success. Only good thing to come from the damn things.”
He lets out a heavy breath.
“As far as Mad Maggie goes ya you could find her at the eastern edge of the village in the small cottage dono why you would want to. She ain’t a people person, why she lives out there alone.”
Veyran sips his ale while listening to the conversation. He then raises other questions.
"We’ve been told that some people have also disappeared in town. How many? Who are they and have they been in contact with Crelik or Maggie in the days before they vanished?"
A frown crosses the barkeeps face as the topic of missing people is broached.
”The village beggar Ovid went missing first same night as the shower. His woman left him last year and since then his life had fallen apart. Owed money and let his land go to shambles. I know Crelik was trying to help him but a man goes down far enough sometimes nothing can bring him back. I personally think he had just had enough.”
The barkeep picks up a bottle and takes a drink.
“There was also that Duvar girl that went missing couple days after the shower. She had been writing love letters to some boy in the city of Sand-crest and I think she left to go be with her lover. Lastly Alora Ashford and young Sam are gone now too. The husband Nick has some ideas on that but I think she just wanted to leave and knew the older boys would not come with her.”
"Hmmmm....good information. I think we should talk to this cleric next. Seems to be connected to much of what's going on. Could be more useful knowledge there. Does anybody ha e more questions?" Says Brix.
You all exit the inn and make your way the short distance to the temple. From the outside you can tell it is old but surprisingly well maintained. A ornate sun is carved into the stone above the double door. Two stained class windows depicting the deity Lucius holding the sun in his right hand and scales in his left. As you enter you can see that the main area is set up as a worship area with an alter toward the back so followers can gather in. A large cloth is hung as a canvas depicting a rising sun is hung on the wall behind the alter as a backdrop. A human man with long blond hair and striking hazel eyes, who looks to be in his mid twenties works gathering food and supplies into crates to be distributed over to the side. He turns as he notices your arrival.
"Oh visitors from outside the village! That's a rare thing to see in a village like ours which offers little outside of the strength of its people. What by chance brings you to this temple and may I be of assistance in anyway?"
He sets the crate he is holding aside and gives you his full attention.
(Gerold and Baldwin you notice that the large cloth is recently hung and not a part of original temple decor, a detail that would have been lost on most)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(Before entering the temple, Belnum would have quickly looked for any signs of the meteor strike the innkeeper spoke of. investigation: 17.)
Belnum approaches the man, and as he does, he goes into witness questioning mode as if it were second nature to him.
"Greetings, you must be the cleric by the name of Crelik? We are here investigating the going on in this village since the meteor shower. As such we have a few questions we would like to ask you, it should only take a minute of your time." says Belnum signaling towards a nearby bench in case Crelik would like to have a seat.
He then begins his line of questioning, "What can you tell us of the night the meteors fell? It would be helpful to retrace your steps, especially noting anything odd that you can recall seeing or hearing."
(OOC: I had to edit as the dice roller isn't adding my +3 for some reason and I was trying to correct)
“Investigation? No, I supposed I should not be surprised given all that has happened over the past week. It was only a matter of time before this happened.”
Crelik takes a deep breath and composes himself.
”I have always followed Lucius since they days of my youth. However this changed before the meteorite shower. A baby in this village was deathly sick and beyond my ability to heal. Why would a deity of light and justice allow this to happen?! Was he not capable or unwilling to aid? Then as if a sign from the heavens the stars fell. With this sign I heard the voice of a God willing to act. He helped me save the boy!”
(Baldwin, Brix, Gerold you notice a flicker of doubt cross his face)
”I know that this village has had much trouble. I have only ever wanted to help these kind people and I believe that this new God can provide me the means to do so! Still I am but a man and I confess my conviction is not without faults. May I ask a favor of you all? The night of the shower I investigated the land behind my temple where the stars hit and took what I found. I need to destroy it in the presence of my new God and free myself from all doubts. Would you go to my cottage on the northern edge and bring it to me. This idol clouds my thoughts and I am uncertain if I have the strength to act on my own. It is kept under my bed in a trunk.”
Crelik retrieves his cottage key and holds it out in his hand towards you.
Belnum takes the key, "Did this new God happen to give you their name? Also while you were checking out the area behind the temple did you happen to see anyone else there?"
Belnum's tone shifts some becoming a little more sterner, " What can you tell us about the recent disappearance of the beggar Ovid and a Duvar girl? We have a source that states you were trying to help Ovid get back on his feet before his disappearance."
Crelik turns and walks over to the large canvas cloth and pulls it aside showing you a crudely drawn symbol.
"He has not given me a name but he has shown me his sign. I see it my dreams and throughout the day in visions. I drew this during one of those visions without even realizing I had done it till the vision ended. He promises to abide with us and be our Lord!"
He looks troubled at the mention of Ovid
"I told Ovid about the new God and his desire to help. I wished that he would come to this temple and meditate to seek guidance. He told me he would but I have not seen him for many days now. I fear that he gave up and now lies rotting in the forest somewhere. As far as Pearl Duvar it is my belief that she left to be with a lover. She was known to be infatuated with a young half-elf boy in Sand-crest. Forgive me friends, my mind is trouble at all that has transpired and I feel as if at times I am loosing myself."
He sits on a pew
"As far as anyone else, I did see old Mad Maggie poking around where the meteorites fell but none other."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(Religion check to see if I recognize that symbol: 4... okay, so I know jack about it... I would like to insight him but afraid it would be considered metagaming since the clue was for Baldwin, Brix, and Gerold)
Belnum looks at the symbol, but doesn't recognize it belonging to any deity.
"It seems weird that a benevolent deity would choose to conceal their true identity, but it's certainly not unheard of.", states Belnum with a sense of familiarity on the subject in his voice. "I did check out back and saw where the pieces of meteorite landed back there, but it seems the meteorites are gone. You wouldn't happen to have them in your possession, would you? This feeling of loosing yourself that you mentioned, do you recall when that might have started?"

Belnum then thinks out loud while stroking his chin.
"So it may be possible that Crelik and Maggie might be unknowingly causing this madness by transmitting something from the meteor..."

(Will leave it for a little for you guys to ask more questions or have other suggestions if you all want to go to the temple we can proceed to there)
Belnum nods.
"Yes I agree, it would be wise to go and talk to Crelik next."
