... but for some strange reason, that shoulder is all she can seem to focus on ;). She follows it down into the darkness underground as the companions begin to file down the stairs. And if that shoulder, and the rest of Cainneach, don't make it back out safe, neither will she.
The group carefully descend to the bottom of the newel staircase. Old bones and riven armour lie tangled here. Picking your way across the debris, you find yourselves at the intersection of two 3m-wide corridors.
Looking north, you see a further wide flight of steps leading down to a heavy mahogany portal. There are no doors along the east and west branches of the corridor that you can see, but when you shine your lights south it falls upon two doors only a few metres from where you are standing.
Thatch picks his way across the remains to the intersection of the corridor, pointing out the broken armor along the way to Cainneach “Do you recognize any of these, do they match what you discovered up top?”
He peers down the hallways at the intersection and reports back to Almeric and the others “The cross passage seems to go on forever in both directions with no signs of breaks, but there are doors going further down and another set opposite of those.” Seeing that the doors to the south are close, he steps up and looks them over closely, looking for any markings or symbols on the doors or any sign of traps. Perception: 13.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Cainneach, wielding a torch, takes a careful look all about, joining Thatch to peer down the lengthy east-west corridors, to examine the armour, and to inspect the nearest doors. He also calls Salt to sniff and listen for anything noteworthy.
At the top of the stair, Almeric reassure Fergus with a smile and encouraging hand up. When the others are focussed on other things, Almeric whispers to Fergus. "You let me know if you lose control, and I can end your pain quickly friend."Almeric is entirely serious and well intentioned in this horrifyingly brutal remark.
Almeric is supremely confident as he descent the stairs. The Retinue are masters of their own abilities and a formidable force to be reckoned with. They have defeated a Spector, two Gargoyles and a Demonic curse without a single wound! Excellent team work, clear communications and perfect execution marks them out as an elite unit beyond any expectation. Almeric cannot think of any other unit he would rather command and is extremely proud. He has not yet 'noticed' the relationship between Fahm and Cairnneach as he maintains a degree of separation from his leadership position .
"My instinct is to check any rooms for treasure and threats. Let us go south first."

"Aye, we need to check that all's safe down here.," Famh agrees. "And we need to be sure not to forget bringing that staff with us when we go, to give into Myrddin 's keeping. The powers of evil have subtle ways of making a body forget. We just saw what happened to Fergus, and here we've gone and just left it lying where it was for any camp follower or bandit to come wandering along and try to seize!" While she worrits, though, she is busy helping Cainneach and Thatch investigate the nearby armor and doors; she trusts that the trained scouts plus Salt's nose will be able to pick up signs of danger in the shadowy long corridors better than her own eyes.

Famh is amazed to recognise some of the armour fragments, they are lamellar plates from old Mercanian armours...one of the families in her Clan has a set won in battle centuries ago....if she had to guess this armour belonged to those who invaded the citadel...

Fergus balks at the notion of bringing the staff to Myrddin, afraid of what the entity might do with his wisdom, power and influence.
He is reassured by Famh and Ori's jest but his mouth falls agape at Sir Almeric's offer.
Fear turns to anger as he grunts in agreement with Ori, eager to regain some control by engaging with an enemy and finding less cursed treasure.
(Keeping an eye out for any runes or writing with Eyes of the Rune Keeper)
Once Thatch declares the doors in the southern corridor safe the nearest two are opened carefully and the companions can gaze within.
West wall
This room shows signs of having been the living quarters of several men. The damp rotted wood of eight pallets are arranged along the room.
East wall
This is similar to the room opposite, except that a tapestry hangs along the southern wall. This has remained curiously untouched by the passage of the years. It is embroidered with ghastly scenes of human sacrifice, necromancy and still more obscene practices. These rites are being conducted beneath a gibbous moon, from which a pale-skinned figure has come down. The figure has the body of an androgynous humanoid, but from its neck and wrists grow masses of writhing serpents.
There are two more doors beyond these and then the corridor comes to a corner turning west...
Thatch looks at the scenes on the tapestry with disgust, especially the ones depicting human sacrifice. “More snakes”he looks over at Famh “you mentioned a serpent falling from the moon and a king earlier. This looks like more of that, what is the connection with this place? Is that supposed to be Karvala on the tapestry?”
Famh is amazed to recognise some of the armour fragments, they are lamellar plates from old Mercanian armours...one of the families in her Clan has a set won in battle centuries ago....if she had to guess this armour belonged to those who invaded the citadel...
Tracing her finger delicately over the outlines of one of the plates she has recognized, Famh calls, "Come look at this one, Cainneach! One of Laird Erek's factors had a set of plate like this that he'd squeeze himself into at clan ceremonies. He always said his great-great-grandsire had ripped it off the back of a Mercanian reaver as he grappled him down and cut his throat with his dirk. No, his sgeain dhu."

This looks like more of that, what is the connection with this place? Is that supposed to be Karvala on the tapestry?”
Drawing a deep breath to calm herself, Famh peers at the tapestry, frowning. "I don't know. I hope not. We were told by that fellow at the entrance that Karvala had watched over this land but ... what we've seen since ... I just don't know." She swallows. "I had a vision just before that thing tried to possess Fergus, and that's what I was crying out about. The serpent falling from the moon and burrowing into the world, that was in the Seeing direct, but the name just came into my mind in response. The fomorians were evil and twisted giants in the stories I heard as a girl, who were driven underground by the Tuatha de Danaan, the fae of the light. So it would make sense that if they had a king, he'd be 'dark'."
Fergus glances at the tapestry and his stomach flips. He moves back the way they came a small distance to dry wretch before returning to the group. "We should press on." he suggests hoarsely looking at the doors further in.

Famh gets an extremely bad feeling about the tapestry......as if it actively wants to harm everyone nearby....
Fergus moves down and with a nod from Thatch pushes open the next Western and then Eastern door.
Western Door
The decayed shelves of this room once held carved stone plaques. These are now just splintered fragments underfoot. Looking more closely at a large piece of one of the plaques, you see that it was once covered with small carved script.
Fergus:-
It is unlikely that anyone else be able to make anything out from the weathered and cracked stone but Fergus is able....somehow....to read the words contained.....it appears to be a guide for a ritual for sacrificing children to cause the moon to rise....other fragments hold prayers to The Outer Dark.....others still describe means of calling the dead to service....
Eastern Door
This small chamber is bare of adornment except for a silver crescent-moon motif on the western wall.
Fergus shudders as the meaning behind the script reveals itself. To Thatch he points out his findings.
"What a wretched place to wash up near. Much like the tapestry, it appears to be instructions on a ritual for sacrificing children to cause the moon to rise. This one contains prayers to something referred to as The Outer Dark. And these fragments here together describe rising and enslaving the dead. More horrendous necromantic magic."
Fergus spits on the ground.
"At least it looks like somebody came and cleared the place out, may have even tried to destroy these."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Prior to entering the southern room, Cainneach notes to the party the twists and turns further down the eastern and western corridors. He has no trouble guiding Salt into the southern room after the hound is clearly agitated by whatever lurks down the western corridor. Cainneach hastily sketches a crude map of the areas they've observed thus far, marking an unhappy dog pictogram on that western corridor. It accompanies a simple rendering of the serpentine staff above.
When Famh passes near, Cainneach lightly lays his hand upon her arm and whispers, "I think you're right about the staff, it shouldn't be left here for just anyone to stumble upon. But I don't think there's much danger in leaving it for now and retrieving it on our way back out. I did mark it on my map, so we don't forget. It could be a burden and risk, given how careful we'd have to be in transporting it." Following that, he enjoys her brief tale regarding the armour. "I feel like I missed quite a bit, having lived so far west. Thankfully, those Mercanians must not have ventured into the Pagans and we heard few stories of their raids from the coast. I have so much to learn of our homeland, and so much that I've forgotten. Perhaps one day you and I could travel throughout more of Thuland ..."
Cainneach's words trail off upon entering the southern room. His stomach turns at the sight of the tapestry, both due to the graphic nature of the scene depicted and thanks to memories of his (I think) very first encounter with Syr Valor and the others in Vallendar's tomb. Spectral knights emerging from just such a work of art ... "Everyone, pay heed to the tapestry! Thatch, Tana, and I can attest that these depictions can carry real danger. And this one is far more gruesome than the last we laid eyes on."
It is difficult for Cainneach to say if the more nuanced discussion of the tapestry that follows between his companions settles his nerves or not. In either case, Salt does not seem to approve, so he and Cainneach go to review the pallets before moving on to the next set of doors.

Thatch nods at Cainneach’s words “He speaks true, we have seen the creatures on them spring to life, and I don’t like the looks of this one.” He exits the room quickly and moves along with Fergus as they search the second set of rooms. He glances down the hallway as it makes a turn to the west. “We are getting further from the main portal going down. Should we return there or keep following the hallway?” Thatch moves carefully up to the end of the hallway and peers around the corner to see what lies to the west.
Famh nods emphatically in agreement with what Cainneach and Thatch said about the tapestry. "You're right. I wasn't there to see the last, but I don't like the feel I'm getting from this one. It feels like it had an evil spirit too ... as if it was somehow alive, and hated us and all that live. I don't know what will lay this ghost, or how many possessed things we'll have to keep the world safe from before we're through here. But we'd better check each area completely before moving on, for it would be far worse to miss one."
As she turns away to help with the further search, she says to Cainneach softly, "I wish we were traveling together now, in any other part of Thuland but this. We'll see it through though, for our friends and each other. But ... someday, I'd love to travel with you more, leannan 'neach. Anywhere." With that, she gives him another smile and moves to the other side of the line of pallets. Beginning there, she will help search them as she works towards him, meeting in the middle, and then follow him and Thatch to check the westward turn.

It is difficult for Cainneach to say if the more nuanced discussion of the tapestry that follows between his companions settles his nerves or not. In either case, Salt does not seem to approve, so he and Cainneach go to review the pallets before moving on to the next set of doors.
Cainneach: Investigation 20 (anything of interest amongst the pallets)

Thatch nods at Cainneach’s words “He speaks true, we have seen the creatures on them spring to life, and I don’t like the looks of this one.” He exits the room quickly and moves along with Fergus as they search the second set of rooms. He glances down the hallway as it makes a turn to the west. “We are getting further from the main portal going down. Should we return there or keep following the hallway?” Thatch moves carefully up to the end of the hallway and peers around the corner to see what lies to the west.

Neither Cainneachs eyes or Salts nose find anything of interest , whatever may have been here long ago succumbed to the ravages of damp and time.
Its hard to make much out in the dark but shining his lantern a little way down the passage seems to open into a large room.
Much like Cainneach and Salt she has little luck locating anything amongst the ruined wood and dissolved materials but just as she stands up she catchs sight of something glinting in the torchlight, reaching down she pulls away a piece of stone wedged into a small hole in the wall and discovers a silvery sewing needle* seemingly untouched by the salt, moisture or time.

Fergus takes out his notebook and quickly notes his findings before replying to Thatch.
"Hold on, do not go alone." before quickly shadowing the brave adventurer, ready to call the others should there be danger.
