"What in the name of the gods is that?"Thatch takes a tentative step closer to investigate the creature and he gets light headed as a wave of nausea washes over him. Turning to the side of the road, he looses what was left of the mutton pie into the weeds and tries to regain his composure.
Cainneach takes a careful look at the fungus, though he requires the illumination of the lantern to make any reasonable assessment. As he contemplates what he knows or can deduce about it, he asks Famh, "You said you can see in the dark? What exactly do you mean by that? How do you see? What do you see?"
...
"Well, I'm no sure I could see if it were pitch dark, but since we started traveling by night I've found that my eyes... make use of what light there is, to help me see as though 'twere twilight still? I've always done well picking things out in the e'en, but never knew that would continue after full dark had fallen." She smiles reassuringly at Cainneach, and seems about to say something more when the nightly noises call the retinue's attention to business once more.
Both Cainneach and Thatch know that the fungus, if cooked, is edible though not overly tasteful....Cainneach is also aware that Dru had said that a poultice of the raw fruiting body was officious against bleeding and for healing wounds.....though with many more stronger and more effective options available she'd never had call to use it. They are both aware, of course, of the folklore about imps and sprites drinking from both this fungus and its relative the ruby cup.
Cainneach strains but can hear nothing.
The companions kept on through the night finding no danger, though there was snow on the ground now as they continued to climb, finding signs of a roadside camp as the sun began to peak over the mountains ahead. If the Sheriffs guidance was correct they had a few more hours to go before they reached the holding of Tomintoul.
Salt alerted again as they passed a tannin dark tarn to their right, looking ahead an odd shape sat on the road a creamy grey colour at the base, with what must be long fur rippling in the wind, at the top much darker moving about in a jerking manner.......
After a few more steps the shape resolved itself into the corpse of a long haired wiry goat being fed up on by a large dog sized rodent with black fur and a somewhat flattened tail.

Cainneach rushes to Famh's side, taking note that nearly everyone in the party's been stricken. "Ye gods, leannan, what has come over you? Are you all right?!" He cradles her carefully until he is sure she is in no imminent threat of collapse. His mind immediately leaps to a suspicion of Almeric, given that the Capellar is unaffected, but realizes that is ridiculous, for Cainneach is not under the malevolent influence either. In fact, he felt nothing at all, which is puzzling. The forester peers about anxiously, though without the lantern, he is unable to perceive much. Whatever it was that caused this, it must be near and was certainly a threat. However, Cainneach wasn't so sure that the beast ahead of them was responsible.

OOC: Vardi makes a Wis Save and gets a total of 15 which is just enough to make it, so she's still poisoned but no damage this time.
Thatch: “Should we kill it?”
"And will it smell any less deadly if we do?" the Lyften lass asks in a hoarse whisper as she reaches for the hammer on her belt instead of her longbow and rather than looking at the creature directly, studies the reflection on the surface of her mirror-polished shield intently.
Almeric's mind is suddenly fogged, as if from a night of drinking, his stomach is sour and head is thumping.
Wisdom = 9. Poisoned.
RETCON HELD ACTION = Almeric moves to Thatch, who is close by and in an advanced position alongside the Capellar, and Lays on Hands 5hp, Neutralise Poison.
"Fall back! Regroup out of sight of this creature. We need to formulate a plan of attack."
Moving away with Thatch until out of sight if the danger, ushering everyone else away too.
Thatch feels refreshed as his dizziness washes away when Sir Almeric lays his hands upon him. He scrambles back away from the creature along with the knight, gulping in fresh air “Thank you, Ser. A plan of attack? With a creature that can kill us with a look? Best to fill it full of arrows. I think I can hit it from here, shall I give it a go?” Thatch pulls up his shortbow and assesses the range.
