Cainneach shakes his head at Hotspur's cavalier attitude and warily enters the room with the spinning object. He holds out his spear toward it, seeing if the motion of the thing changes as the tip of his spear draws closer.
( There are compasses but they are currently still quite rare and its unlikely Cainneach has come across it, even Mizzen has likely never seen one personally.)
The object does not seem effected by the spear tips proximity.

“Strange, how is it floating in the air, or spinning around?” Thatch approaches the room warily and tries to determine what is holding the item aloft, then looks around the room to see if there are any additional clues. Perception: 5.

There seems to be nothing obvious though possible the geometric patterns on the wall might be involved there's no real way to tell by looking...
"Well, if it is a test... there must be some puzzle or mechanism here. No one would bother to seal up an eternally spinning wand in a tomb for all eternity if it didn't mean or do something."
Hotspur will examine the patterns on the walls more closely, looking for any irregularities, changes in the pattern, symbols that might indicate writing or mathematics. If there are any shapes or colors that stand out, he will try to gingerly press or poke at them.

After some minutes he comes to the conclusion that if there are any secrets to be found they are beyond his finding...

Tana also inches into the room, also glancing around as she enters. She too focuses on the surroundings as she steps closer to the spinning object, casting a curious glance over to perhaps glean if there are any clear magical properties to it.

It appears to be a shaft glowing at both ends in different hues and spinning in midair with no sign of support...it is definitely some form of sorcery.
Morseth enters the room and observed the spinning object "Nothing has happened so far. Perhaps we should stop its spin. I don't know what will happen, but I think its worth considering"
Having heard Morseth's suggestion, Cainneach looks at Dru, unsure of himself, then haltingly suggests, "I suppose ... I could throw my handaxe into it. Maybe keep some distance? Is that a reasonable idea?"

Dru looks at Cainneach’s question and walks up to the spinning bar. Putting away her bow, she uses her quarterstaff to attempt to arrest its movement.
Dru raises her quarterstaff and the spinning object stopped in mid-air, she could feel the vibrations running through the staff as the wand? tried to keep moving pressing against the wood.
The quarterstaff shifted slightly and came into contact with the red glowing tip and the wooden staff began to smoulder slightly as a small curl of smoke began to drift off of it.
Hotspur jumps up and grasps the wand in the middle, immediately all the tension goes out of it as it sits in his palm.
Hotspur:-
As you grasp it you know instinctively that the wand contains elemental essences of fire and ice which may be released at your command....there is a sense that its power is not limitless and will fade with each use before it crumbles to dust.
Hotspur lands on his feet, and stares at the wand in his hand for a few moments. He looks up at the others. "I can feel... power inside this wand. Power to summon flames or ... or frost I suppose. Must be some sort of fey enchantment." He looks to Valor. "I'm not sure I'm the best person to be entrusted with this... Who do you want to carry it?"

Perception 9
(Would it be plausible that Cainneach would have knowledge of a compass in this setting?)

(Is it spinning around the shaft's axis or is it spinning with the tips going in a circle?)

( Ah! Tips in circle, it's kind of a blurry disc to look at.)

Dru scoffs, “They didn’t leave it for your glory, young noble. It’s more likely a key to something deeper in this tomb.”
