"It's all right, friend," the bard comforts the restrained man, "My coz Sir Valor over there can handle whatever it is. Let's get you free, and then you can show us where they keep the wine around here. THATCH! Where is that boy?"
Valor had been about to admonish Hotspur, that this man was in the stocks for a reason and could be quite deserving of his fate, and he would not interfere with the Justice of his cousin's domain without good reason.
But at the man's words he instead draws his sword, his maul was still strapped to his pack for travel. He looks around while quietly asking the man, "WHAT is still around?"

" The beast. Its mad..."
Valors eyes scan the surrounds and he spots a large form beyond the initial branches and leaves, he has seen its like before though rarely....though there is something different...it picks up speed....
(( @DM: Is it safe to presume that it's almost twilight, and still raining? ))
Argyle didn't like the looks of this. No one in town? No sign of activity? And just one lone man insisting on silence? The bondsman quickly drew his swords and moved closer to Mother Clay, scanning the environment through the rain for any visible threats in the dying light.
(( Perception Check: 19 ))
( Yes, early evening and still bucketing down, though theres a little shelter provided by the oak tree.)
Argyles eyes follow valors and he notes the oncoming form with some alarm...boar...wolf...too big....
Tanatari steps up towards the man with a look of faint concern.
"Does he appear injured or perhaps loopy?" She asks aloud before leaning in for a closer look herself.
(Medicine Check if needed: 22)
Tanas experience and expertise determine that the old man is suffering from exposure and thirst and the way he holds himself indicates extensive bruising along his back and sides...though she doesn't note any breaks or sprains.

The man simply shakes his head tightly as his eyes roam the vicinity in terror..
Quietly, Teryl pulls his bow from his back, and stands near Mother Clay. His eyes dart from trees to rocks that could potentially conceal a predator.
( Combat. Don't worry about Initiatives for now as this....should... be quite short. No surprise round as you handily spotted the bear before it reached you.)
A massive brown furred form exploded out of the trees with a humphing grunt and headed straight for Mother Clay on her mount, true to its nature the hinny simply stood her ground as the behemoth charged.
As the bear closes you all note that something is very wrong with it, a huge cleft across the top of its broad head exposes bone and the wound is black-green and crawls with maggots, trailing from the wound the left side of its face is swollen and its eye is swollen and pink, two broken off spears jut from its flanks and its mouth is full of bloody drool.....
( Actions. Bear clears the trees about 10' away currently.)

Mizzen readied his trident until he saw how terribly injured the bear was. He lowers it but doesn't let go in case he needed to defend. "Blimey! Who on earth did something atrocious to that poor creature and brought it down in this state in the first place?" Medicine check for the bear: 2

Finished!
The maddened creature is met by a flurry of blows opening great rents in its hide, the blood that flows out is dark and discoloured...and carries the scent of spoiled meat....but the animal does not seem cognisant of the injuries taken...
In reaction the bear fixes its eye on Valor and launches into a frenzied attack against him, bringing its huge paw across and trying to sink its ichor and phlegm lined jaws into his face.

Thatch was carefully considering his options, glancing toward Sir Valor as Hotspur encouraged him to help free the prisoner. He was saved from his moment of indecision as the bear leaped toward Mother Clay. Remembering his duty, he moved to step between the hinny and the crazed bear. As Sir Valor and the others intercepted the beast, Thatch drew his shortbow and sent an arrow toward the bear’s flank.

Hotspur managed to distract the great ursine as it moved to savage the downed Valor, as Thatchs arrow sank into its side Mizzen struck at it with his harpoon.
The bear reared up in crazed annoyance and Argyle sank his blades deep into its lungs sending it crashing to the ground.....its good eye fixed on his as it breathed its last, finally at peace.
Valor awakes with a cry, about to attack, but holds himself back seeing Hotspur leaning over him. He looks over and sees the ruin of the bear, and lays back down for a moment. "Faex!" he swears in [Draconic--or whatever equivalent old tongue exists in the world], softly enough that likely only Hotspur can hear him--despite the healing, he always imagined he could feel the pain. "Thank you cousin," he says quietly. After a brief moment, he pulls himself up and examines himself and his armor, assessing the damage to both. Father will be furious if I show up to my cousin's looking a mess. He thinks to himself absently as he picks up his sword, cleaning it before resheathing the blade.
He turned and looked at the others, "Is everyone alright? Anyone else hurt?"
After looking and seeing that he was the only one who had been injured. Embarrassing, he chides himself for not seeing the blow coming. It's a bloody bear, what else did I expect. I should've used my shield.
