Mills moves in slower than the others, continuing to fire with his bow into the skeletons fighting the militiamen, but he's also looking around to keep an eye on the bigger picture of what's happening.
Attack: 12 Damage: 6
Do we see any semblance of order or source to the skeletons?
Goraqull's whip coalesced of magic misses, spraying up snow as it hits the ground. Zanoth and Drax move toward the skeletons, but not at a reckless charge, instead they stay focused and alert. Lucky follows them and after a bit of acrobatic heroics watches as his dagger flies wide left of the entire group of skeletons and slams into the snowy, muddy ground burying itself beyond view. Zanoth's words seem to give the town's militia new resolve, but words aren't weapons, and even though the townsfolk are all combat veterans, they are intensely harried by the overwhelming force of the skeletons. Only Mills' arrow does any damage to the onslaught of collected bone warriors, sticking through the skull of one of the monsters, but shambling undead raised to unnatural life by unholy curses or necromancy aren't as quickly dropped by such well placed projectiles.
Unable to get there in time, this newly met group of warriors attempting to help save the town watch in horror as the bone warriors slash open throats and bellies, killing three of the town's defenders, and severely wounding a fourth. The injured man huddles closely to two others as they wildly swing their weapons and raise their shields in an attempt to fight off the mass of undead monsters.
Having senses attuned to watch for patterns in the tracks of people and animals, Mills realizes very quickly that all the skeletal footprints in the snow came initially into town from one direction, southwest. Without further investigation he won't be able to know if there's some organization to their movement, but for the moment it appears that they all came together, and that would lead one to believe they were organized for some kind of purpose.
(OOC: Your group initiative block is back up. Skellies had two critical hits in that round against the town's militia men, bad luck for them! Have at them!)
Zanoth continues to move forward towards the melee, trying to distract and draw the attention of the attacking skeletons, placing himself next to a couple to provide distraction for the villagers and for Lucky. Tracking the creatures down was for the future, not the current, and the townsfolk needed immediate help.
Striking out at one Zanoth piecing through it’s body with his spear and then smashes it over the head with a critical hit.
Lucky's well placed strike completely obliterates one of the skeletons hampering Hyssop Ridge's shrinking militia. Zanoth then severs the spine of one with the point of his spear and shatters another entirely with the butt-end of it. Both Drax's axe and Mills' arrow miss their targets, but Goraqull's magical whip of thorns cracks off a couple ribs from one of the skeletons. That same skeleton turns and steps to Zanoth, getting spiked with the blade of his spear for it, the collection of animated bones wobbles for a minute, but for the moment is still in the fight. It strikes out weakly, and Zanoth easily parries the blow with his shield, in doing so, though, his defense is temporarily opened up and another of the skeletons slashes a cut across his midsection with its rusty sword. The remaining two skeletons turn their attention to the red dragon man, allowing the militia men to grab their wounded and flee to a safe location. Both skeletons attack Drax simultaneously with their time worn blades, but Drax is agile and ready. The red scaled dragon born easily dodges the first blow and parries the other with his axe.
One skeleton scored a hit on Zanoth, for 5hp damage. All rolls are in the Game Log. All others missed their targets. Your group block is back up in the initiative. Good show all! Let's crush this undead horde!
Taking the hits stoically, Zanoth sees there are only a few left, so continues to press the foe, moving over to the ones on Drax and attacking them. He pierces one and then again smashes a skeleton with the butt of his spear for a critical hit.
Reaction: if hit, attack back To hit: 26 Damage:17
Ooc: sorry souch for posting so late, was caught up in Christmas break things- Merry Christmas!!!!!
(OOC: Ahrjan I'm going to address this here. I put something in our private chat, but I'm guessing you missed it. Drax cannot use the Attack Action to attack and use the Ready Action to ready an attack against an opponent attacking him. You could pick one or the other, but not both. If you're looking at Zanoth's turns as an example, it's not an example that fits your character. Zanoth has the variant human lineage and therefore was able to take a Feat at 1st level. He chose the Polearm Master Feat which allows him to do several things, including using the butt end of various weapons to make a Bonus Action attack when he uses the Attack Action, and also to make an Opportunity Attack whenever an opponent enters the radius of his reach with those weapons. Drax has no such capability that I'm aware of. So, from now on you'll need to be perfectly clear about whether Drax is using the Attack Action to make an attack, OR the Ready Action to ready an attack against a creature with the triggering condition being the creature makes an attack against him. One or the other, not both. As is, I've been ignoring your second actions, because they aren't mechanically feasible. Let me know if you have questions.)
Mills' arrow misses wide again, and he starts to wonder if archery is really a skill he has or if it was all a delusion. Goraquell's thorny whip of conjuration magic lashes out with a swift crack, crumbling the skeleton that was teetering and tottering close to falling anyway. Zanoth's spear cleaves off the right arm and half the rib cage of one of the skeletons, then he pulls the spear and twists and strikes the butt end directly into the sternum of another scattering bones across the mud and snow. Drax steps up and clobbers another with his greataxe, hearing the satisfying clankety clatter of bones falling in a pile on top of one another. The only skeleton left in eyesight is half broken, and were it any other enemy it would probably have turned tail and tried to run, but undead warriors held together by hatred of life and necromantic magic have no such fears. Instead it strikes out with it's shortsword, but Zanoth easily parries the blow, then he, Lucky, and Drax overwhelm the creature dropping it to the ground in a cloud of grave dust.
Turning swiftly on a swivel the group of newfound war companions does not see any other skeletons, nor do they hear the sound of combat from anywhere. One of the bloodied militia men comes over to offer his thanks. "We're all lucky that you lot were here in town for Winter's Feast," the grey haired, grey bearded old timer says, offering a hand in greeting. "These monsters must have been raised from one of the nearby mass graves of bodies left over from the Goblin Wars. No idea what in the Hells would have sparked a fire in their nickers to rise up and try and kill the town of us? I just thank the gods you all were here to turn the tide."
Aye Lucky ye are, I'm thinking we earned a free meal and a warm bed for our efforts don't you think?
They call me lucky and this here is Zanoth the rest of my um... friends can introduce themselves. We areca merry band of sort can go take a look at this grave sight for you. If the price is right that is.
Whilst Lucky takes the accolades from the village defenders, Zanoth instead tries to detect with his Divine Sense if there are any undead within range.
You see several severe wounds on Zanoth, he Looks like he can carry on for a while but will need some rest and recuperation soon. (HP = 6 / 14).
Zanoth's supernatural senses attuned to locate undead and fiends don't register any more threats within the vicinity or sight lines of the magic's capability.
When Lucky popped out from behind Zanoth to greet the old townie the grey-beard jolted nearly out of his skin, and placed a palm on his chest. "Dear gods!" He exclaimed. "You can just pop out on an old man like that, you damn near stopped my heart with fright." He pulls at one of the small beaded braids in his beard as he thinks. "I sure think a warm bed and a warm meal and some ale are in order for you, but I'm not the one who'd be footin' the bill. You'd want to talk to Aaris, the owner of the Silver Feather, or to the mayor, Bercha. They're both probably around somewhere checking to make sure everyone is okay. Aaris is going bald with short cropped grey hair and hazel eyes. The mayor, Bercha, he's got copper hair and brown eyes, and he'll have his trusty old greataxe strapped across his back if it isn't still in his hands."
