PROLOGUE There is a large inland sea on the new earth that is as vast as a continent on the old earth. On the northern shore of that sea lies the powerful city state of Brixtonia. Largely ruled by humans and half elves, Brixtonia is a military power built on the mining of iron and copper. Just north of Brixtonia lies the compound of Doctor Manx Omzig, an eccentric millionaire, inventor and wizard. Everybody knows of the doctor but nobody knows about the doctor, so the rumors abound. An exiled fey? The child of demons? The last apprentice of Merlin? The lone survivor of the old earth? A dragon cursed to human form? Nobody knows and that's exactly how the doctor likes it! One of the doctor's main endeavors is Doctor Omzig's Custom Tinkering Shoppe. It was here that a young halfling rogue ordered a special set of custom thieves tools.
Ammon the rogue got his tools but was left with a debt that he could not pay. The cost of enchantments was much more than he had imagined. The doctor has summoned Ammon to his compound to offer him a chance to make good on his debt and earn a hefty bounty in the process. He told Ammon to bring help so he has brought his brother Zotar, a bard and a spy. The doctor has also asked his apprentice Fen to go along on this task. Fen's old school chum Seldor, upon hearing that Fen was now working with the doctor sought him out in hopes that he too might find work with the mysterious doctor. Fen invited him to accompany him on the unknown task so that he might gain favor with the doctor. For many year the doctor has been buying material components for his enchantments from a wood elf monk called Michal. When Michal heard of the doctors dilemma he volunteered his pupil, Sarro to assist. The largest temple in Brixtonia is the Temple of Odin, Thor and Baldr. It was here that a young cleric of Baldr named Diangar was finishing his studies as a graduate assistant when he met a young paladin of Thor named Thurston. Thurston asked Diangar's opinion of his conflict with his sister Runa a follower of Loki. Despite the ensuing debates the three became friends. Diangar graduated and was assigned to minister to the district that includes the doctor's compound and the doctor has asked him to protect those on the quest. Diangar agreed and thinking that it would be a bonding experience for the siblings invited Thurston and Runa. The doctor was quite pleased with the group that would undertake this task, but he didn't like the number. His calculations and scrying showed him the number 9. He needed one more. The son of an old family friend had recently asked him to translate a ritual written in old fey script into the common language. That young man was now a full blown warlock. Dr Omzig knew that Aydrik was last one he needed.
The group is assembled, ready and gathered together outside a barn on Dr Omzig's compound. Even Fen doesn't know what's in the barn or what the doctor wants you to do. All any of you know is that Dr Omzig needs a favor and is reportedly paying very well for it, though none of you know how much. Ammon knows that it is greater than 1175 gold pieces because that's how much he owes the doctor.
Thurston is seated in a pack of hay some yards of the barn’s door. He had his warhammer in his hands, looking at the barn’s door as if he was wondering if he could open them with one slam of his hammer or not. He wears his armor and his backpack is on the floor at his right. His helmet, adorned with a couple of feathered wings, lies in the hay at his side, his blonde hair, long to his shoulders, moves freely.
Runa stands beside Thurston, a mildly amused smile on her face as she glances around at the others gathered. Although nearly as tall as Thurston and bearing a familial resemblance, her hair is a deep red which contrasts with her black chain mail.
Several small braids are woven into her long hair. Runa twists a sprig of mistletoe wound into one braid and arches an eyebrow at Diangar.
“A barn?” Runa sounds amused, not the least bit annoyed. “You dragged us here to look at a barn? I may be overdressed for the occasion.”
Fen is a tall slender looking Elf running around in a robe like shirt that hangs to his mid-thigh, dark brown pants, and soft leather shoes. He is hair is clean cut sandy brown, skin is lightly tanned. His waist is wrapped in pouches of many shapes and sizes.
You see him looking wildly around the yard, "Has anyone seen my pack? I left it sitting next to the door. I have to find it before we leave." He then makes a beeline for the wagon. Pulling packs and bags off the wagon, "I bet that Seldor is hiding it from me. He like playing tricks like this in school."
Seldor is a slim, medium sized Half-elf sitting down wearing a green jacket, a dark grey shirt, black pants, and leather boots. His hair is brown and his eyes are hazel. On his belt are two daggers and a component pouch.
"What would I need your pack for? Your books are completely useless to me."

Aydrik is a tanned, clean-shaven human of average height. He's been against the wagon, seemingly unaware of the fact that his fine green shirt and equally fine tan pants are getting rather dusty. Once or twice from his leather belt he's un-clipped a rod of ivory, about half a foot long with a small glass sphere at the end. Many of you recognize it as a kind of arcane spell focus, but Aydrik has only used it (so far today) to make sure his short blond hair isn't messed up. Besides the rod, Aydrik wears a small brown pack and a knife on his belt.
Aydrik steps off of the wagon, leather boots clumphing on the ground, when Fen draws near.
"Your pack?" he asks the elf, not looking too worried.
"I'm sure you'll find it. After all, we likely have some time before Dr. Omzig shows up."
“Your pack is right there were you left it five minutes ago “ says the paladin pointing at the pack lying on the ground, near the front part of the cart with his hammer.
”Now come!” He says to Runa “Overdressed? Do you have another thing to dress?” He says smiling to his sister.
Sarro looks around at the others nervously, for the first time he can remember his mentor is not there to watch his back. He tentatively goes up to Fen and introduces himself. " I am Sarro, you are Fen? do you know why we are here?"
I stand in the shadows of the barn, pacing back and forth, rolling a gold coin in my fingers. I peer at the others waiting around in the group, sizing them up, not sure who I can trust I think to myself. They must know there is a lot of gold to offer after the completion of this mission. Wouldn't be very hard to sabotage the group and rake in all that money for ones self...... I've been in precarious positions with other powerful man in the past, but something about this wizard made me think twice. Seems a little too powerful and a little too mysterious to double cross.
I am speaking with my brother, Zotar, while I pace. I have not seen anyone from my family in sometime. I was able to get word to the family estate asking for his help, which i am not proud of doing. But alas, this may save me some of my skin in the long run. The letter was vague about the reasons I needed him, but that was explained upon his arrival. I began conversing with Zotar about the family and the business. They’re rather well off and that’s where I want to be. Life isn't worth living unless you got the money to live.
"Mother misses you Ammom" Zotar's voice was soft, comforting, he sat with his back against the barn in the same shadows as his brother, or maybe in the shadow of his brother. "...Father too, though he'd never say it." Zotar pushed a bit of his black hair back away from his young face and peered up at his brother, his blue eyes watching the coin trick Ammom was performing. "No one judges you harshly for having left...well, at least I don't. That's why I'm here, a lot has happened since you've been away."
Raising my voice a little, but still hushed. ”yeah, well I had to leave. I’m not going to give that old man the pleasure of knowing I need his money to survive. He’s always held that over my head. Every piece of copper coming with his judgment. I was done.....”
I slam against the barn with my back, sliding down into a sitting position. “As far as Mother goes, I miss her as well. She never passed judgement the way Father has.”
I continue flipping the gold coin in my fingers. “Now look how I turned out because of him. I didn’t want this life, but my hand was forced. Victim of circumstances some may say. But you know, I’ve never lived life as much as I’m experiencing now. Hopefully you will see Brother, there’s so much more out there than selling the secrets of others as Father does.”
I flick my coin over to Zotar. “This’s just the beginning,” I say with a sly look coming across my face. “Dr Omzig is quite the oddity, but the adventure that awaits will truly be something magical. I can feel it....... can’t you?”
Diangar is standing next to Thurston as Runa raises her eyebrow at him. He's a medium athletic build. He's looks human but when looking into his eyes, it is dark bluish grey but at the pupils it seems to have light coming out of them. He wears are a bluish purple chain mail shirt with grey pants. On the outer layer, he wears a white linen robe made to look like a trench coat. His arms are crossed and smiling at the Runa. He has a set of purple prayer beads wrapped around his right hand. At the end of the beads dangling down is a amulet with a silver chalice with a blue gem on one side and a hammer on the other. On his back is a shield and on his side is a mace.
"Are you comfortable at least?" Diangar asks Runa "If you are, then that what's more important." Now looking at green jacket wearing half elf, "I'm sure Dr. Omzig may have some water." He sticks out his hand to him. "My name is Diangar."
Zotar deftly caught the coin and smiled, "Information isnt' a terrible business, along with the wine it's made Father very rich. All of that could be ours ya know, just have to accept it." Zotar looked down at his feet, "I am excited for this, seeing a bit more of the world has always been a dream of mine. From the looks of them..." Zotar looks over to the gathered group, with their weapons and armor. "...I think it's fair to assume we will see combat, and I am not eager for that. Though trust, since last you saw me Father has had only the best swordsmen instructing me, so I will have your back if it comes to that"
Seldor reaches out towards the hand that has been extended towards him and grabs it. "And I'm Seldor. It's nice to meet you, and while I'm sure that the Doctor does have some water, but that's not quite the beverage that I was interested in."
“I’m not ready to accept the things the family business has to offer. Being stuck in the middle of a field and pretending to be interested in people’s nonsense just to sell off words to the highest bidder. How much longer do you think Father can keep it up without things turning on him?” I shake my head. “If this criminal life has taught me anything, it’s that the people you use will come looking for repayment.”
I look over at the group with Zotar. “Dr Omzig is smart, so if he’s sending those guys, there’s gotta be a reason.” I pull a dagger from my waist and eye the edge. “These aren’t for show, but I don’t plan on getting ahead of those folk. For you I’d suggest the same. No use dying when there’s plenty willing to take the fall for glory first. That, I am okay with....”
Runa sighs and rolls her eyes in response to Thurston and Diangar and murmurs something about a lack of humor. Letting go of the mistletoe in her hair, since it hadn’t gotten the reaction from Diangar that she’d been fishing for anyhow, she casts a curious look around at the others, filing away snippets of overhead conversations.
As Runa shifts her weight from one foot to the other, the shield on her back catches the light. The shield bears the image of a black wolf’s head. A black hilt protrudes from the longsword sheath at her waist. Shrugging aside a fold of the russet-colored cloak she wears, she nods and grins at Seldor.
“I hear you, friend.” She nods amiably. “Runa. This lout is my brother, Thurston.”
