When he recognises the two horses on the path, Alden stops and raises his right hand Stop the wagon! I've seen a few things, but masterless horses blocking paths smells like an ambush to me" Alden scans the surroundings intently to see if he recognises anything conspicuous
Perception check (character sheet / game log) : 14
Woods and forests are where Alden Shadowclaw is most at home. If there's anything out of place here, he would be the one to spot it. Scanning the trees either side of the road with a practiced eye, he sees nothing that poses a threat despite his instincts telling him that something is off. The woods are peaceful and the breeze is gently rustling the leaves.
However, having stopped and observed more closely, he sees that there is some debris in the road. He is too far to tell exactly what it is.
"I don't know - further ahead something seems to be blocking the road - from here it looks like debris or something. I can't tell exactly from a distance." His instinct tells him something is wrong. "Keep your eyes open and be vigilant - should we go on slowly?" he asks his new fellows without taking his eyes off the road
Luk looks around warily, “I say we get closer and see what’s happening, if we ambushed then at least I close enough to bash ‘em with axe.” He gets his axe off his back happy for there to be some action and nods.
With the journey’s progress, Aeran grows more and more perplexed, even though his face never betrays a hint of his thoughts. His golden eyes remain fixed on the path ahead, but his pointy ears pick up not only the birds’ chatter as they travel, but also his companion’s conversations. “How peculiar,” the young elf-man thinks to himself, the corner of his mouth tugging slightly as he listens to their talking. “It's as if they're all old friends in a lively tavern, huddled over countless empty tankards of ale, sharing their lives after a few too many drinks.”
Back in his homeland, his kin seldom shared personal stories with strangers, let alone people you just met on a simple escort mission, but maybe it is just a cultural distinction. Perhaps humans and other races on the continent are naturally more open with each other, he ponders. Aeran's limited interactions with other races before embarking on this journey have left him uncertain. For now, he maintains a quiet demeanour, keeping a watchful eye on the road to ensure the oxen don't stray to graze on the grass growing along the wayside.
After several days of uneventful travel, it appears that there is something to interrupt the leisurely journey. The man who calls himself Alden shouts a warning and Aeran responds swiftly by deftly pulling the reins to bring the wagon to a halt. While two of the party members engage in a hushed consultation, Aeran methodically dons his gauntlets and ensures that his sword and shield are within easy reach in case there is any trouble.
While he waits for more information, he looks around from his position, observing their surroundings.
Mayres settled his spellbook on his knee, flipped it open, and began to read. He had already memorized most of his spells, but it didn't hurt for him to have a refresher at what might critical moment.
From his vantage point on the wagon bench, Aeran surveys the area, straining his keen elven senses for anything out of the ordinary. Despite his elevation he is unable to see round the bend to where Alden and Lukuth are advancing cautiously toward the seemingly abandoned horses. He peers intently, trying to penetrate the gloom of the woods on either side of the road, but neither sees nor hears anything to indicate immediate danger.
Approaching the horses, eyes scanning their surroundings and on high alert for danger, Alden and Lux see that there has been a fight here. Torn scraps of fabric, some saddlebags that presumably were on one of the horses, and their contents, are scattered across the road. As you close in, you recognise the horses as those which had borne Gundrun and Sildar when they departed Neverwinter the day before you, and one of them has an arrow stuck in its rump. Luk spies a map case lying among the debris, open and empty.
Just then, Luk and Alden's heads swivel left as they both hear the snap of a twig. They find themselves eye to eye with a goblin, shortbow at the ready, lurking just inside the woods. Realising they have been spotted, the goblin calls out some kind of command. None of the party understands the words, but the meaning is clear - attack! The command causes a second goblin to raise its bow as well, this movement revealing its position to the watchful pair on the road.
Aeran, Mayres, and Astraea hear the Goblin's shout and are left in little doubt that Luk and Alden have walked into an ambush.
Both of the goblins that you've spotted are 15-20ft from Alden and Lux, and are in half cover in the undergrowth (AC +2).
The three with the wagon are 150ft back down the road and cannot see the goblins.
Giving a quick prayer to the Gods he didn't believe in that the enemies wouldn't be wolves -- running through the woods, branches ripping skin, branches ripping clothing, bleeding, gasping for breath, their hand intertwined, sinuous and fanged beasts hunting them in the dark -- Mayres took off, coat flaring behind him.
The High Elf scans the area, trying to discern if there is any danger, but the trees are too close to each other and the banks on the sides of the road are too high, so soon he gives up, opting instead to wait for more information from the two party members that went ahead to investigate. These few minutes of stillness and anticipation feel like hours as Aeran listens intently for any additional communication from the human ranger and the goliath.
And then a shout finally pierces the air, but it is not in the language that the paladin expected. The unfamiliar voice, followed by the warning of ambush, immediately alarm Aeran and he fetches his longsword.
“This is not a good idea,“ he mutters softly, but what choice does he have? The wagon is too slow to turn back and he's left without sight of the rest of the party. Abandoning the wagon to go and join the rest of his companions isn't an option either.
With a heavy heart and gripping the reins in one hand and the sword in the other, he signals the oxen to continue forward.
You don't need to wait for your turn to post your action unless your action depends on what those ahead of you are going to do. Describe your action whenever you are able to, and I will play them out in the correct order. Somehow, despite the goblins lying in ambush, you've all got the drop on them. Alden and Lukuth are poised on the road, eyeballing the two goblins from 15-20ft away. Mayres jumped off the wagon and started running, and starts his turn 150ft back down the road from Alden and Lukuth. Aeran is urging as much speed as possible from the willing but not especially athletic oxen. He also starts his turn 150ft away.
Alden keeps his distance to the Goblins and moves 15ft towards the horses. He sees Luk storming towards the nearest goblin with incredible speed and a loud roar. Quickly but with precise composure, he aims his longbow at the other opponent hiding in the bushes.
With a sillent voice he sais to himself "got you little fella" an fires an arrow

"I don't think you're going to read us a good night story now" Alden said with a friendly laugh
