Ok, Aeleth needs to make a Dexterity (Stealth) check. He is not proficient in Stealth, but he has a dexterity score of 18 (so +4 modifier). So, please, roll 1d20+4
Aeleth's Stealth check is a success! He moves through the dense briar thickets with remarkable stealth and agility, his movements undetected by the hidden goblins. He is now in position to surprise them from his flank while Torrga, Merric, and Lola approach from the other side.
On the east side of the stream flowing from the cave mouth, a small area in the briar thickets has been hollowed out to form a lookout post or blind. Wooden planks flatten out the briars and provide room for guards to lie hidden and watch the area—including a pair of goblins lurking there right now!
Aeleth arrives silently and unseen, just as the two goblins see Torrga, Merric, and Lola crossing the stream. He can attack them by surprise!
Aeleth seizes the opportunity to strike first, taking advantage of the goblins' surprise. He draws his shortsword and dagger, ready to unleash a swift and deadly attack.
The goblin closest to Aeleth is one with a flat nose, and when he sees the elf lunging at him, he desperately curls up to avoid the blows as best he can. The shortsword barely misses him, grazing his head, but the dagger lands, hitting him in the upper arm. The goblin cries out in pain, his eyes wide with surprise.
Lola falls on the surprised goblins the next moment, leaping among them like a fury and swinging her Greataxe against the other goblin, a specimen with a grim look and little hair.
Little Hair Goblin narrowly avoids the heavy blade - and it is only then that he notices Merric, who has come up behind him ready to stab him with his shortsword!
The blade pierces Little Hair Goblin's heart before he even realizes what hit him.
Meanwhile Torrga, wielding shield and warhammer, attacks Flat Nose Goblin, from the opposite side of Aeleth to make it more difficult for the enemy to keep an eye on both of them!
The shortsword strikes true, its blade finding its mark in the flat nose goblin's flesh. The goblin yelps in pain, its defenses faltering under the relentless assault.
Aeleth follows up with a quick thrust of his dagger, aiming for the goblin's exposed flank. But the goblin, desperate to survive, manages to deflect the blow, the dagger's blade glancing off its armor.
Undeterred, Aeleth presses his attack, his movements a blur of deadly precision. He circles the goblin, his weapons flashing in the dim light of the cavern, relentlessly seeking an opening.
The wound Aeleth inflicted with such precision proves too much for the goblin, who loses his grip on the scimitar, then collapses to his knees... and finally falls to the ground, dead.
"Well done, Aeleth!" Lola congratulates.
"Thanks to you, we gave them a nice surprise!" smiles Merric.
"You are quick with both sword and mind, elf!" Torrga says, with a look of approval.
Aeleth sheathes his weapons, a sense of accomplishment washing over him. "Thank you," he replies to his companions' compliments. "We worked well together, and that is what led to our success."
The group turns their attention to the fallen goblin, its eyes glazed over in the stillness of death. Aeleth kneels beside the body, his expression contemplative. He recognizes that the goblin was merely a foot soldier in a larger conflict, a pawn in a game played by others.
"We should not forget," Aeleth says, his voice soft yet firm, "that this goblin was once a living creature, with its own hopes, fears, and dreams. It is a tragedy that it was led astray and driven to violence. We must strive to understand the root causes of such conflicts, to find ways to prevent such bloodshed from happening again."
His words echo through the cavern, a solemn reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of compassion. The group listens in silence, each one grappling with their own thoughts and emotions.
With a heavy heart, Aeleth stands and turns to his companions. "Let us continue our mission," he declares, his voice regaining its resolute tone. "We have much to do, and we must not allow ourselves to be consumed by sadness. We must honor the fallen by continuing to fight for what is right, for peace, and for understanding."
The group nods in agreement, their resolve strengthened by Aeleth's words. They venture deeper into the Cragmaw hideout, their hearts heavy yet their spirits undeterred, ready to face whatever challenges await them.
You all venture deeper into the Cragmaw hideout, following the narrow dry path on the right-hand side of the stream that exits the cave.
The path is so narrow that you can only travel in single file, so Lola goes first, trusting in her sturdy metal armor to protect herself and her imposing greataxe to defeat any adversaries. Second to her comes Torrga, wielding her warhammer and keeping her shield at the ready. Third is Aeleth, ready to intervene either with his own weapons or with spells. Last is Merric, who already holds his bow taut, ready to strike at the first sign of threat.
Unfortunately, the inside of the hideout is completely dark... Torrga and Aeleth, thanks to their Darkvision, are still able to see, albeit in black and white, for 60', but Lola and Merric are not!
"Does anyone have any way to shed some light?" the mulatto warrior asks nervously "I need both hands to maneuver my Greataxe... I can't carry a torch or a lantern..."
Aeleth, his eyes gleaming with the ethereal glow of his elven Darkvision, observes the situation carefully. He recognizes Lola's predicament and the tactical disadvantage posed by the lack of illumination. Determined to assist his allies, he reaches into his spellbook, his mind racing with potential solutions.
Recalling the cantrip Mage Hand, Aeleth conjures an ethereal hand of shimmering energy. With a flick of his wrist, he directs the spectral hand to float above Lola, illuminating her path with a soft, ethereal glow.
Aeleth can command the spectral hand to grasp the torch from Torrga's hand and hold it aloft, positioning it in a way that evenly distributes light throughout the narrow passage. This would allow Torrga to wield her warhammer and shield simultaneously, enhancing their defensive capabilities without sacrificing illumination.
With Mage Hand holding the torch, Aeleth can focus on providing magical support and protection for the group. He can cast spells like Shield to deflect incoming attacks, cast Sleep to incapacitate multiple enemies, or unleash a flurry of Magic Missiles to strike down any foes that threaten their progress.
"This should provide some light, Lola," Aeleth explains, his voice steady and reassuring. "You can now focus on wielding your greataxe without worrying about the darkness."
Lola's eyes widen in gratitude as the ethereal hand holds the torch and casts away the oppressive shadows. "Thank you, Aeleth," she says, her voice laced with relief. "Your quick thinking and magical prowess are invaluable to our team".
Merric also appreciates Aeleth's assistance. "Indeed, Aeleth," he adds, his gruff voice laced with a hint of admiration "good job. Now, let's go and find Sildar".
You then follow the path inside, while the murmur of the stream that flows nearby covers the sound of your steps. After traveling 10' - 15', on your right, a few uneven stone steps form a second path, about 10' wide, which leads up to a small, dank chamber on the east side of the passage.
The small path you followed, however, continues, always along the course of the stream, towards the north, starting to hint at a broad curve towards the north-east.
Which path do you prefer to follow? Do you stay on the small path north? Or do you climb the uneven stone steps to the east?
After carefully considering the two options, Aeleth suggests that the group should first explore the small, dank chamber to the east via the uneven stone steps. The murmur of the stream suggests that the path leading north may be more accessible later, and the chamber might hold valuable information or clues about Sildar's whereabouts.
The chamber could potentially provide a strategic advantage or reveal crucial details about their mission objective. By prioritizing the chamber first, they can make informed decisions about their next move.
The group cautiously ascends the uneven stone steps, their senses heightened and their weapons at the ready. The anticipation of what lies within the chamber adds a layer of intrigue to their already perilous journey.
