Hey gang, I'd like to start recruiting for a West Marches style PbP game. Looking for a few brave souls to round out an an adventuring group.
Without further ado ... the sales pitch:
Havenford is a bustling frontier town nestled on the edge of civilization, surrounded by untamed wilderness and looming mountains. It's a melting pot of adventurers, traders, and settlers, drawn by rumors of untold treasures and ancient ruins scattered across the wilderness. The town is surrounded by dense forests, rugged hills, and sprawling plains, teeming with both wonder and danger.
Rumors abound, drawing adventuring groups forth from the relative safety of Havenford.
Among them:
The Ruins of Thornwood Abbey
Thornwood Abbey was once a grand monastery dedicated to a forgotten deity, but it now lies in ruins, overtaken by nature and inhabited by sinister creatures. The ruins are rumored to hold relics of great power, attracting treasure hunters and scholars alike. However, the abbey is also home to malevolent spirits and foul beasts, making it a perilous place for inexperienced adventurers.
The Shadowfang Caverns
The Shadowfang Caverns are a network of twisting tunnels and subterranean chambers. The caverns are infested with goblins, kobolds, and other denizens of the deep, all vying for control over its hidden riches. Rumors speak of a powerful necromancer lurking within its depths, conducting dark experiments to raise an undead army.
The Feywild Glade
Deep within the heart of the forest lies an enchanted grove, the Feywild Glade. Some even say that this enchanted grove contains a portal to the otherworldly realm of the Feywild, a place ripe with vibrant magic and capricious fey creatures. The Feywild Glade is a tranquil oasis surrounded by towering trees and sparkling streams, but its beauty belies the dangers that lurk within. Fey tricksters and malevolent spirits often lure unsuspecting travelers into their midst, while ancient guardians fiercely defend the glade's secrets.
...
If this sounds like something you can sink your teeth into, I'd love to hear from you.
At this stage, I do not want to see a character sheet ... but I would love to hear about what sort of character you would be interested in playing.
When we get to CharGen, characters will begin at first level and may be created by either using the standard array or allocating a 27-point buy.
I am not too picky about which sourcebooks are to be used, but I will say up front that I am not a fan of the backgrounds that grant feats or add spells to a character's list of known spells.
Although this tale will not take place in the Forgotten Realms, for simplicity's sake, I do plan on using the Forgotten Realms pantheon.
For the record this guy started a campaign with my group, played a couple encounters, leveled us up and then ditched the campaign to come start another one here. ^^^ wouldn’t recommend if you’re trying to have a serious or worthwhile campaign
Greetings! Havenford sounds like a lovely place to have adventures in and the West Marches style fits my tastes. I prefer roleplay focused games over dungeon crawls and can post daily.
Concerning OTheophylus‘ warning, what was the issue with this abandoned project? I think communication is the most important part of any group project and sometimes things just fail. What do you mean with „although I would not characterize those players as OTheophylus' group“?
Character Idea: Apprentice (wizard/cleric) of a necromancer coming to the frontier to escape persecution after their master was killed. Searching for a place to be safe and free they hope Havenford will provide them with opportunity and riches to continue their training. They are young and misguided so they don’t question the path they were set on by their master yet.
Alternatively in this setting I could probably come up with a fun druid character, seeking to explore the wilds above and below.
I‘m always a fan of coordinating characters with other members so the group has an interesting (and harmonic) dynamic.
What do you mean with „although I would not characterize those players as OTheophylus' group“?
When I say that the group did not belong to any one forum member, I simply meant that the four players were — until that particular tale beginning — four random forum members that happened to all join the same tale I was recruiting for. It wasn't as if some pre-existing group had joined the tale.
I found the characterization of 'my group and this guy' to be a bit polarizing. If I were to characterize the group, I would say 'four players and a DM.'

I agree with you with regard to communication. However, I'm not going to get into a discussion of any specific 'he said, she said' from a previous game.
Onward.
Here is an article I found very useful when trying to define the tone I am going for with this West Marches style game. The article is a very interesting read. I will paraphrase it a bit.
"There was no regular plot: The players decided where to go and what to do. It was a sandbox game ... There was no mysterious old man sending them on quests. No overarching plot, just an overarching environment."
With regard to roleplay, if I had to estimate the breakdown of the three pillars, it would look like so: 40% Exploration, 40% Combat, 20% Social Interaction.
My style of play might be a bit too dungeon-crawly for a player who does not have a taste for dungeon crawls.
Having said that, I believe that there is absolutely a place in the tale for a young & somewhat misguided necromancer.
I could definitely get behind this! Not really worried about the previous negative comments.
To be honest I'm OK to play any kind of character, but I have the most experience with beast master ranger (Half-orc Aaaghnold and his trusty boar Bacon). All in all I think I enjoy nature based characters the most. Druids, Rangers, Barbarians as classes and some sort of hermit/wanderer/weird forest hobo backgrounds.
I just realized that I didn't mention the posting rate I was shooting for. In terms of posting frequency I will be aiming for, I can manage about 4-5 posts per week. Most times, I can post near daily, however, I feel like committing to that would be a path toward burnout.
@_Miglasezis_ ... Weird, wandering, hobo hermits absolutely have a place here!

4-5 posts per week is definitely very "light". Can manage that and more. Just the question of time zones probably (I'm GMT+2).
GMT+2 (summer time). I'm open to try this style, I can get plenty of roleplaying immersion by just interacting with the group. Checked out the links, looks good to me
Sounds like a fun idea. I'd like to play a paladin of Torm, "the god of duty, loyalty, righteousness, obedience and, after the Spellplague, law," according to the lore I've found. This paladin's primarily interested in the Thornwood Abbey and what relics might lie there, the acquisition of which will surely only enhance their ability to carry out their mission of righteousness, but is also interested in ending whatever evil lurks within the Shadowfang Caverns, and probably stopping the conniving influence of the fey realm while they're at it. Basically, if it's out of line with the paladin's currently-held beliefs, it needs to be sorted out. :)
Games fizzle out sometimes. It is what it is...Whatever the above guy mentioned I don't care much about....With that said I enjoy the sandbox type game. Migs and Kis up above like to play nature chracters as do I! So if you like to have chracters knowing each other I am down for that. If not I am ok playing any magic wielder. Never been one of the run and smash types. Thanks!
I like to play Druids but don't mind stepping out into wizards, clerics, Sorcerer, warlock, ranger/rogue.....really I just like to play and am open to doing whatever.
Hey if you're still recruiting, I was hoping to use Balen, my (chaotic good) changeling rogue (arcane trickster) character who was a former sailor that sort of just wonders around as a salesman. I made him up for another PBP. Balen would probably join since his main goal is to buy a boat to live in and is in need of money (being a salesman is hard). Also, maybe he wants to go to the Feywild to understand his ancestry (he was born captive on a pirate ship so he doesn't know what it's like to live there). If that's cool with you?
My time zone is the Eastern Time Zone EST. I think I can do 4-5 posts per week. I'm in college and working part time, but I feel like that's manageable.

Okay, the world presents some problems and we don't know what to do / You've come to find your feelings aren't exactly what you knew.
Chin up! / Don't bet on sinking ships because they'll turn your chips to trash. / You've got to set your sights and hopes on setting not to crash!
The truth can seem quite bleak if you don't make your plans unfurl / But I would not let that mar my opinion of the world!
Looking for any more? I wouldn't mind throwing a character in the ring.
Xondario the half Goliath (custom lineage). Had the farm he worked at ramshacked by a horde of goblins and now hunts down those that take advantage of remote places, extra motivation if it's goblins. He carries the fencing maul he was using to build a new fence when the farm was attacked. He would be looking into the evil of the caverns.
Retracting character, sounds like you got better fitting options! Good luck all!

Yes, this game is still actively recruiting. I have 3-ish players (two confirmed, one more mulling over the invitation), and I was hoping to get 4-5 players before we begin.

Trolling aside, I don't dispute any of OTheophylus' assertions.
I did start a tale with a group of players, although I would not characterize those players as OTheophylus' group. I ended that tale recently as well.
The relevant threads are here, here, and here.
For any prospective players, I invite you to pop on by ... see if our play styles are a good fit.
