First, everyone should know that I'm new to DMing. Please provide constructive criticism tactfully and gently. Mistakes will be made (hopefully infrequently) by both players and myself, the DM. Since this is play by post and we don't have the time constraints of a face-to-face campaign, I will take the time to look up the rules for any scenario where I feel my knowledge is lacking.
I intend to interpret the rules as they are written (RAW) in most scenarios. If you feel I've interpreted any of the rules incorrectly, please bring it up as soon as possible. If we've played an additional two weeks after the situation in question had a ruling I will not retroactively change what happened. However, if I'm convinced the ruling is wrong within a reasonable timeframe (1-3 days at most) I will edit the post in question to reflect the change (and I advise everyone who has posted after to do the same).
I moved the My Materials, House Rules, Character Creation guidelines, and Something to Consider to the Discord Server in the #campaign-rules and #campaign-info text channels. I created a campaign page for this campaign here at D&D Beyond. My players no longer have to send me the link to their character sheet. I have access to them through the campaign.
Guidelines for posting to this thread have been moved to the Discord Server in the #rping-guidelines text channel. I'm leaving the above for quick reference.
Use the following format for introducing your character.
Character Name
Provide a short description and your character's motivation for going to Nightstone. If you'd like to write two or three sentences briefly summarizing your character's background you may.
Include the information below in your first post to help determine posting order.
Note: Replace initiative mod with the actual number from your character sheet.
Your dexterity score will be used as tie breaker for initiative. Your wisdom score will be used for dexterity tie breakers. If there needs to be a tie breaker for wisdom, the character whose name comes first alphabetically will be selected first.
The general posting order for this campaign is as follows:
Roslyn - drakin8564
Sylvie - mistybluelights
Ton'takk - Jenbi
Ao - Hetiekae
Sigfrid - Jyesula
Galokeagam - sparafucile
Battles are an exception. Once battles have ended we will revert to this posting order unless four or more of you want to reroll posting order.
(OOC: 9/10/18 Edit - I got my Forgotten Realms geography wrong. I made the necessary changes to my post to fix it. Sorry for any confusion!)
You will be travelling together on an unnamed road for the next three days. You will be traveling on this road toward the High Road (in a slightly north west direction). Once you get to the High Road you'll still be a couple of miles south of the road that leads toward Nightstone.
Some of you are travelling toward Nightstone and some of you intend to travel to Waterdeep. Regardless, all of you have ended up travelling with the same group of people. Most of the people that you're travelling with are looking to make a better life elsewhere. Most of you have agreed to travel with these people to provide protection for them until you reach the fork on the High Road where you could go straight (north) to Waterdeep or east toward Nightstone.
You are travelling with the following people:
Thomock - Male Dwarf Merchant, travelling toward Waterdeep with his wife Branka and their daughter Fera.
Alwin - Male Elf Scholar, his destination is unknown. He mostly keeps to himself. He doesn't go out of his way to talk to anyone else.
Lotho Brandybuck - Halfling, he's travelling the world to taste the world's best ales. He makes sure to introduce himself to everyone else. Every single day. Multiple times per day.
Bard - Male Human, Merchant. He's travelling toward Nightstone. His girlfriend Elin, also human, is travelling with him.
Jane - Female Human Barmaid, widow, travelling with her two children (a boy and a girl). She hasn't allowed their names to be revealed to anyone else.
Amin - Dwarf Soldier, travelling to Waterdeep to join the guard there.
Day 1
Since you're going to be travelling for a few days, you should take this time to get to know each other. Introduce yourselves to each other. Reveal as much (or as little) about yourself as you'd like. You may interact with the other travellers as well.
Note: I will post as necessary to represent interactions between yourself and NPCs.
Edit: (answering question)
You are traveling with three wagons and some horses. The group isn't moving very fast, which is why it's going to take three days to get to the crossroads.
With the number of people on the trip and the small number of wagons, the conditions are less than ideal. Everything feels cramped.
Always the energetic one, Roslyn is off in her own world. Despite rarely being on the main path, she is already a good distance ahead of the rest of the group. It's almost as if she is oblivious to the fact that she is traveling with several other people.
"I'm so glad to be out of that crumby place," she says quietly to herself. "This is a new chapter, a new me..." Roslyn stops suddenly and stares off into the distance, reminiscing. She has a somewhat stern, almost disheartened look on her face as she holds her necklace pendant in hand, but only for a moment. A smile returns to her face and she continues on. "This is so awesome!" she yells, pushing even farther ahead of the others.
(OOC: General: In case the people before me haven't played before, I'll give a different example of a character post. Generally, I'll go in the correct order.)
Ao has spent the majority of the trip so far getting to know everyone, the PC's and NPC's alike. As a Cleric of Life, people are generally quick to open up to her. (For context towards the NPC's, "Passive" Persuasion: 13, "Passive" Insight: 13.)
Outside of getting to know everyone, she will spend most of her time healing any minor wounds that come up, if any, and tends to walk beside the wagons instead of being cramped inside of one.
(OOC: To DM: Every night, I'd like to make an action.)
Amin, an experienced dwarven soldier from Silverymoon, looks in Roslyn's direction with disapproval. He's received news from reliable sources that goblins have been spotted in the area. However, Goblins aren't the only threat. If the report is correct they could be facing a worse problem.
He then yells after Roslyn, "Lassie, gie yerself back tae th' crew. That's nae place fur a wee bairn tae be gallivantin' aboot!"
sticking mainly to himself, the Dragonborn in old looking clothing has said little to nothing as most of his time has been spent either in meditation or looking out to the areas they pass by on the trip to the town. Aside from revealing his name, most of his short outbursts of talking have been to ask others their reason for travelling, or if they know a good place to head for to purchase a permanent homestead.
Latched onto his hip is an old net, that has seen fair use in the past that he checks over every few hours, messing with the lining and trying to tighten the weave by hand every so often as he tries to memorize everyone travelling along with him. " So.... I know it may be obvious, but I have to ask. What is our plan should we be jumped on this road? We are essentially moving a caravan of people and possible high wealth. Can any of you handle a fight? ".
He poses the question before returning silent, checking through his personal belongings without really showing anything off aside from what is already clear to see. He continues his Vigil on the surrounding area.
Sigfrid talked. A lot. He spent that largest part of the journey talking to folks and dazzling the children with what some of the less entertaining adults called 'cheap tricks.' This did not shake his resolve to impress the lot of them, however, no, it merely made him more insistent. He liked the Dragonborn a good deal too, he was stoic and calm. A nice antipodean relationship to be certain and the thought of that entertained him to no end.
Sigfrid looks at the Dragonborn, "Fight? Sure, from a distance and with a wall of meat shielding me, that is. I'm not really one for the whole 'getting your limbs removed' thing."
I don't particularly seek anyone out, but I respond amiably to any who approach me. I ask Lotho "Know any of the Tooks in your travels?"
Usually i'm just playing my drum to pass the time. Anyone caring to notice will see an interestingly shaped drum that looks sorta like an hourglass strapped around my shoulder. Not playing them super loud, only really loud enough to reach the ears of those nearby in the group. I know better than to intentionally attract trouble on the road.
Sylvie spends most of her time staying close to Galo's side. It makes her uneasy to be around so many new people but she does her best to smile at every one of her fellow travelers. despite her silence she listens closely to the conversations going on around her and she perks up as she hears Galo speak.
Roslyn stops dead in her tracks, confused by Amin's words. The message seemed urgent. She stood there for a moment pondering what she had just heard. "Why can't he just talk normal?", she thought, "hmm.. wee bairn... weebairn.. wibarn..."
A huge smile came across her face after scanning the horizon. She turned to the rest of the caravan, leaned forward with her hands together at her knees. "There's no wyverns here you silly!" she shouted back. Not able to hold it back any longer; she giggled, spun back around and started skipping down the road.
Amin continues looking after Roslyn with disapproval. "Silly lassie! wa willnae she listen tae reason?" he mutters under his breath. He takes his attention off Rosyln and wanders around checking to see if anyone needs help with anything.
(OOC: Lotho has had several drinks already. Checking to see if he passes his CON save.)
Lotho decides to take a huge swig from his tankard before responding to Galokeagam.
Con Save: 20
He grabs Galo by the hand and starts shaking his hand liberally. "Nice to meet you good sir! My name is Lotho Brandybuck. The Lotho Brandybuck." He releases Galo's hand and bows "At your service." Then he realizes Galo asked about Tooks and returns to his normal posture. "Tooks? Tooks? I can't say that I know any Tooks, but I do know some good folk from the Proudfoot family!"
He then shares a bunch of stories about adventures he had with his friend, who is part of the Proudfoot family.
