Kherek. On the second day of applicants, an older female dwarf comes into the inn. She introduces herself as Mrs Nancy Frostbeard. She asks where the kitchen is but walks to the back before you can answer and you hear here talking out loud. "No, this simply wont do." She walks back out and tells you she will be back in a 15 min. She comes back with a sack full of food.(Your tavern has yet to be stocked) She heads straight back into the kitchen and gets to work. After about 30 min, she comes back with a steaming bowl of a green soup. She tells you that is a special family recipe of a Split Pea Soup. It is delicious maybe the best thing you have ever eaten. She tells you her wage is 10gd a tenday and she will be back in a week when the provisions guild comes so that she can make sure they dont screw it up. She packs up, tells you a nice goodbye, and walks out without your response.
Kherek thinks Fancy Nobeard is a dynamite cook, and appreciates her no-nonsense approach. He also thinks he might be in love which would be extremely problematic as he does not approve of work-place romances and knows he will have to swallow those feelings down in the same black hole as his rage. Surely that is the healthiest and most sensible approach.
To Kherek: Due to the fact it took 1 day of negotiating and two days of work in the taproom, you werent able to start on the Unseen Servant until Day 4. Start your 20 day counter on the 6th of Ches.
To All: There are advertisements around the city that a very popular bard named Black Bart is coming into Waterdeep to play during the festival weeks. He will be tavern hopping to play shows.
Also on Trollskull Alley with your tavern are a few other business:
A Fire Genasi and Water Genasi have a Blacksmith shop and armory.
There is an Herbalist shop run by a druid.
There is a Bookstore run by a Dragonborn wizard.
There is a Wood shop run by a half elf.
There is also a peculiar business that appears to be a private detective. You havent seen who runs it.
(to Josh: So I'm looking over the Durnan's guide for upgrades. IIRC you said it would be the lowest cost listed to get these upgrades we already have in our tavern in working order? So the taproom will cost 200gd, and the cellar will be 400gd, etc?
If so we have
taproom: 200
kitchen: 200
Lavatory: 200
cellar: 400
office: 200
= 1200gd total
Kherek would like to get people out to do this work as soon as possible
The loan was only for 2000gd. Any other work will take a business day for every 100gd. You wont get top value for lowest gold cost for the added rooms/improvements. So if you pay the lowest price for the beer garden, you will get the lowest tavern value.
to Chen when he was rambling about his escape hatch-
"Whoa, Chen, slow down mate. What has got you so worked up man? I know we stepped on some toes in that warehouse and down in that sewer but I don't think we need to start living double lives just yet. Besides if we are going to have a business in this city it would probably be wise to invest some time ensuring the our investment, and thus the city's, safety. I wanted to go down to The Yawning Portal later to talk to those two gents who said they might could get us some work if we joined up with them. They seemed to be much more organized and focused on protecting the city. An escape hatch/tunnel still isn't a bad idea and if you want we can see about some sort of secret door to your room. Once everyone wraps up what they have going on let's all head down to get a drink and talk to those two about some work for us and what all being a member involves."
(OOC to Blake and Josh: I am not sure how the 25% on repairs and stocking works, is that 25% off the initial repairs to the rooms we already have? Just trying to make sure I am on the same page with all this.)
We'll get the rooms the tavern came with up and running. so 1200gd there which while bring our valuation to 24. so 800gd left. Do we need the beer engine or beer garden to participate in the upcoming events?)

The 25% off applies to the rooms that are just being renovated. So you only pay $900 to get it up and running. You do not have to have any other additions to open the tavern. Any additions from here on out will be at regular price and equal the level at which you paid to have it built. Those additions will add to your tavern's overall value and determine which table you roll on.
Room mods = tavern value
Lif +10, Unseen Servant +10(when completed), Nancy Frostbeard +10( +15 when tavern is selling Split Pea Soup) = mod added to your d100 roll(+30/+35 with soup).
You can also invest in promotions for your tavern(1gd = +1 mod to d100 roll)
If Lucian wants to play at the bar you can gain +1 to the d100 roll for every day he plays.
Or you can hire a bard for the same effect. Not all NPC's are created equal. Some one like Three Strings may lose you money based on his poor playing. I will have you roll and Investigation roll and determine the effectiveness of the NPC accordingly.
There will also be random events that can positively or negatively effect a tenday's profit margin.
Sounds like something to look into. In the long run.
Chen interrupts at that point, and doesn't hear the rest of what you said, because he's talking over you in a louder, more desperate voice, "No! Not 'in the long run.' Right now! We have to get this started now. It will talk a while to build get it built, and I can''t keep staying here if there's only one way out! You might see this place as our new home, but when I look at all these walls, and think about staying here night after night after night after night, all I see is a prison! I can't.. (I think that's when Nijal speaks up at message #49, which I will reply to next)
Chen: The 14 let's you glean some information on the Xanathar's Guild. You are told that they are despicable. Xanathar. whoever he is, is narcissistic and has a very short temper. His thugs are made up of mostly humanoids that live underground and things from Undermountain because they hide from the Lord's Alliance deep under the city.
The 4 on the Zhentarim comes with conflicting results. They are seen as a legitimate faction by the city of Waterdeep. Recent events with the Xanathar Guild and some less than legal actions have gotten them into a lot of trouble with the city.

(Chen starts calming down) "When we were handing out our business cards to the Xanathars and the Zhents, it was no big deal, because we were still living the adventuring life, moving around from place to place, never staying still too long. We'd do a job, collect our pay, and move on to the next job. But, now, all of a sudden we're tavern owners? We're sinking our feet into the ground here? I can't do that! (he takes a deep breath, looks around to make sure no one is listening, and lowers his voice) "I might have people hunting for me. I used to be a pirate. I didn't mean to. I didn't know that's what I was doing. I just thought I was crewing a merchant ship. But, when I found out, I spoke up, and the Capt. made the rest of the crew tie me up and throw me off the bow of the ship, and then they set sail again, dragging me underneath. They think I'm dead. I thought I was dead, too. But, surprise! I found out I can breath underwater, and swimming is as easy as walking. So, eventually, I untied myself, and got away. Anyway, if they find out I'm alive, they will hunt me down and finish the job! So, it's bad enough that we are setting down roots, but this is a port city--the largest one around! Plenty of people might recognize me here. And, the longer I stay here...it's just a matter of time before word gets back to the Captain that I'm not dead."
(When you get to the part about the 2 guys at the Yawning Portal who said they might have work for us, Chen will finish calming down) "Yeah, I remember there was a guy at the Yawning Portal who told you he might have work for us. Lucian also mentioned a guy named Jalester Silvermane from the Lords Alliance hangs out there. Was that the same guy? I'd rather stay away from doing work for thieves guilds and other shady groups like the Zhents."
Chen relays the information in message #54 to the rest of the group, but spins the information about the Zhents with a more suspicious bent, and adds, "I've spent too much time tricked into being a bad guy's toady. I don't want to do that again."
To Josh: Chen wants to visit the Genasi blacksmiths. He is looking for 3 things: a set of throwing knives that are re-skinned daggers, a bandolier for storing those knives, and a chain ladder, like this:
(Chen starts calming down) "When we were handing out our business cards to the Xanathars and the Zhents, it was no big deal, because we were still living the adventuring life, moving around from place to place, never staying still too long. Would I have been around for this conversation? After the field ward, I would be interested in knowing more about Chen and his life before Waterdeep.

I assumed that Lucian followed Chen back to the tavern. Chen would have directed his comments to the original lineup of the Reputable Fellows, but if Lucian inserted himself into the conversation, Chen would have noticeably paused, considered whether he wanted to exclude Lucian, and then decided to include him in the conversation.

I did, I just wanted to respect the groups space. I would have listened if not told to leave, but I wouldn't have interjected. Chen would notice me connecting the dots from our earlier conversation. That "Oh..." moment.
Kherek is sort of taken aback by Chen's outburst. Chen was showing sure signs of PTSD: Post Traumatic Swashbuckling Derangement. It was some new age mumbo jumbo that Kherek had heard from some human periodicals, but hadn't put much stock in it... til now. Kherek knew he'd have to be gentle with Chen while he was feeling trapped.
"Chen... everyone else too. I aim to make this place a viable base of operations. I'm going to be living here, in the tower, until I do. I won't let some thugs run me out just because of some hurt feelings. A place like Waterdeep... Lucien knows what I'm talking about. Dragons speak louder than a few dead thugs. We prove our usefulness to the right people and we're in. We can't show fear. It'll be the end of all of us.
DO what you guys need to make yourselves feel safe. But don't let it impact what we've been given with this place. This is an opportunity I won't let slip by. Steel yourselves. We've all killed, we've all been in mortal danger before. This isn't just a tavern. This can be our fortress."
(OOC: btw i've been watching a lot of Ozark and that's really been informing Kherek's motivations and thinking haha)
After all of this has occured and things have settled down, Lucian would want to grab a bottle of whatever alcohol we had on hand and pour each of us a drink (I would get the skunky beer for Kherek, he seemed to like that).
"Ok, so as the Reputable Fellows, what do each of us want for this group? What do we want as individuals?
I'll start. I want to get to a place where I can make a difference in Waterdeep, and hope that by being a fellow Fellow that I can gain the ability to do so.
What about you gentlemen?"
Lucian looks at everyone else expectantly, drink in hand.
