Following Brats lead pulling the reins to stop the oxen she looks at Brats. "It does not look good to me." Turning back to pops. "Do you think it could be a trap?" She asks shifting a little to show her unease and concern for the situation.
[OOC: When the time comes later would a Medicine check be appropriate to determine how long ago this happened?]
As Brats notices the horses, he proceeds to pull back on the reigns to stop the oxen. Brats nudges Ny and motions toward the dead horses. "Hey guys, we have an issue up ahead!?"He shouts back at the group before looking at Ny."Do you think this is recent?" He asks wondering if this is something we need to be concerned about.
[OOC: With Natural Explorer, my favored terrain is Forest, are you classifying this area as Forest?]
Yes, this would be forest so all those perks apply.

I would say more of a survival check since they're horses.
While Ny talks to Pops, Brats hops off the cart, he walks a couple feet ahead and surveys the surrounding area, panning from left to right.
[OOC: While I'm looking, do I notice anything out of the ordinary? Any strange smells or sounds.]
You can give me a perception check.
Since you are not proficient in perception, the natural explorer bonus does not come into effect.
Natural ExplorerPHB91
You have a favored terrain type. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for proficient skills when you make an INT or WIS check related to it. While traveling for an hour or more in your chosen terrain, difficult terrain doesn’t slow your group’s travel, your group can’t become lost except by magical means, you remain alert to danger even when you are engaged in another activity, you can move stealthily at a normal pace (while alone), you find twice as much food while foraging, and while tracking creatures, you learn the exact number, sizes, and how long ago they passed through the area.
I will say if you feel a check is necessary, go ahead and roll it.
The only caveat is please do not roll the same check for every post you make. I have seen people do perception checks in every post they make and it's difficult to adjudicate. A one self inititated perception check per "encounter" may be a good rule of thumb. If other checks, including perception, are necessary, I will ask you to roll. I'm not going to try to pull a fast one on you guys because you didn't roll when you should have. If you don't roll and need to, I'll ask for a roll.
[OOC: That sounds reasonable, but I'm new, and I wasn't sure what kind of check you would of wanted to make. Going forward, per encounter, I'll be sure that if I feel a perception check is warranted, I will put it in a OOC of my action.]
Brats noticed rustling sounds coming from north and south of the path. These areas are elevated above the path and the sounds are coming from the thick forest. It does not sound like an animals movement.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sven
Sven looks around warily trying to asses the situation and seeing if he can spot or hear any threats himself. "Does anyone see anything?" as he brandishes his Halberd and takes a couple steps forward to get a better view.
Brats hears Sven and turns toward him, moving softly toward him. As he approaches he says in a hushed voice. "I don't see or hear anything coming from down here, I did however hear some sounds coming from the trees, up on the ridges by the horses." He glances back over at the horses then back at Sven. "It didn't sound like any animal I've ever heard." Brats looks over at Ny and Pops and quietly yells. "What are your thoughts? What do you think we should do?".

"I don't like the look of those embankments. Looks like the perfect place for an ambush." "I'm thinking I might get well off the path, just behind us here, and try creeping up closer through the woods to get a closer look. Any objections?"
(OOC: Which side has the higher elevation? Unless folks insist on a different plan, I'll plan to head due north or due south from just behind the blue dot, depending on which way will give me the higher ground, and circle around to the east to get a better look. Let me know if I should roll stealth and/or perception)
After hearing Pops's plan, Brats places a hand to his chin contemplating the plan. "I do not disagree with the plan, however I think it would be foolish for you to go ahead without some sort of backup. Especially if it's an ambush!" Brats moves toward Pops and readies his bow in his hand. "How about I climb one of these trees here to provide you some cover from above until you get a better understanding of what we're dealing with?" He looks over at the trees and sees which one would be best suited.
Petros was fashionably late. "Gents! I apologize for my absence. My lute needed new strings!" He walks up the wagon and hops into the back. "I certainly hope you all don't mind me practising along the way? I take requests!"
(OOC: I am sorry! I was totally watching the wrong post!)
"That best be one damn useful lute. And now ain't exactly the time to play it." (OOC: Welcome, DTELDER!)
(Turning to Brats) "Two is never quieter than one. But, sure, stay well behind me, and then get up high and keep your eyes on me as best you can." (OOC: Are we picking speech colors?)
Petros arrive where you all have stopped the wagon. He’s out of breath from running along the path to play catch up with the wagon crew. As he offers to play a tune, he notices the group on alert. From what, Petros doesn’t know.
Posting here is the actual adventure thread. The private chat is just that, out of character chat. All story related material is to be posted here. Please keep up on the story so the continuity isn’t all over the place.

Neither side is higher than the other. The trail has been carved through this natural small hill.

Speech colors help me if you’d like, but not required.

Theres trees all over. Are you wanting to stay close to the wagon? Move closer the the fell horses? North or south of the trail?
As Petros arrives, his face red, lungs out of breath, Brats looks over at him. "Petros, nice of you to join us!" I chuckle watching him arrive. "As far as something being amiss, we are not sure yet. The low ground seems quiet but I did hear some strange noises coming from above. Pops and I are going to go up ahead to see if we can spot anything." He looks toward Pops waiting his lead.
