OOC > So, stealth results were 19, 13, 12, 10, 5. Two of the highest were at the back. It would appear the front of the party stumbled.
Hildi sneaks out into the hallway, moving quietly, followed by Jorin, whose axe has winked out at Drusk's command. In the relatively dark corridor, Hildigrim stubs his toe and while he manages to not cry out (Stealth 10), he stumbles and nearly falls, but Jorin quickly catches his pack, preventing a full flop (Stealth 13). There is a moment when nothing happens, and then Drusk, ironically the one party member who can see perfectly well in the dim light, runs right into Jorin (Stealth 5), there is some fumbling, some grunting, and Joybringer slips from Drusk's grasp to fall... into Ilena's hand as she glides up (Stealth 19). She quietly hands it back to Drusk as the party gathers itself again. Pascal trundles along behind relatively quietly (Stealth 12).
It would appear you have not been heard.
You approach the stairs up and carefully survey what you can see. A long room extends ahead of you at the top of the stairs. It is well lit with several torches. At the far end is a raised area, with a large chair. On the left side, several alcoves are closed off with curtains. On the right side, a large entry is blocked by double doors.
At the far end, in front of the raised area, three humanoids stand over a fourth, who is on the ground. The one crouching over him has a glowing fiery fist. They look like bandits. You can't tell much about the guy on the floor.
On the raised area, however, sitting in the chair, is a nightmarish figure you can see well, watching the proceedings. It is humanoid, dressed in purple robes, but its face ends in several tentacles, instead of a mouth. Its alien visage is watching the scene in front of it. The creature is petting something in its lap. It is facing you, but not focused all the way down the hall at you. Yet.
Map:
Map notes: B is bandit, O is the guy with the flaming fist, F is for Fall down guy... yeah, that's the ticket!
Notes: Next round will be the start of combat. You will all get to act, as the "monsters" will be implicitly delaying (this is concurrent initiative's version of a surprise round, you get the drop on them, but they get to act after that). Note that your corridor is 5ft wide. You can pass each other for difficult terrain, but cannot end a turn in the same square. But, as you may all be moving at the same time (see concurrent initiative) you may not have to pass each other. If you all move into the room, for example, there will be no problem. If someone delays, or only moves a little, people behind them would have to move past them. We'll play it by ear.
Next: Everyone please declare.
Declare Delay or as many of Action, Move, Bonus Action and/or Reaction as you want
Roll initiative (just in case)
Roll for your declared actions (to hit, damage, etc.) if any
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ilena inhales deeply at the sight of the tentacle monster out of sheer dismay. She manages to hold in a shout, instead searching her mind for anything she may have read or heard about such creatures. She's unsure of what she should do, but she's pretty sure it's not nice to hit people with flaming fists. Wanting to charge in to help, her injuries from the previous fight give her pause.
If it looks like the bigs are going to rush forward, Hildigrim will climb the stairs and move 10 feet to his left to gain some cover from being around the corner. He's then going to delay to watch the rush before acting.
(I am getting mixed messages. "They look like bandits" = attack, while "humanoid with face tentacles" = flee for your life.)
Drusk will move into the room and one square east (as long as only Jorin and Hildi need to be pushed through). The figure all the way south looks dangerous, and if it decides to attack the party, Drusk is ready to scream for people to retreat. Hopefully it is an illusion or statue.
In the meanwhile, bandits spend too much time in the dark, and can use a little sunshine to brighten their day. Flame-Fist needs to make a DC 12 DEX save or take 6 radiant from the Sacred Flame.

OoC - I am deeply concerned about the possible mind flayer, but Jorin has no fear of anything, and I see Drusk is lighting people on fire, so huzzah!
Jorin quickly scans the room. The sight of the foes arrayed against them gets his blood pumping and pupils dilating. He takes one of his axes in a two-handed grip, and with a roar, run to the fire-fist.
Jorin and Drusk rush past Hildigrim, up the stairs and into the room, while he, Ilena, and Pascal wait a moment to see what the enemy does.
As Jorin raises his axe and charges into the room howling, Drusk steps aside just inside the entrance, and calls down the joyful fire of Lliira onto the half-orc standing over the crumpled body. The radiant fire hits him full on (Sv 5), and he howls in pain (6 dmg).
Turning, it sees Jorin running pell mell down the room towards him. Howling a wordless cry, Jorin swings his battle axe in a two-handed uppercut that catches the half-orc (11) and lifts him off his feet 13 dmg!), to crash down on top of the prone figure, unmoving.
The tentacled figure on the chair stands up, depositing the brain cat on the ground, and glides more than walks down the western stairs towards the double doors. It burbles something in a language none of you understand, and waves its fingers at Jorin, who suddenly stops panting and raging (Saves 4,2), and turns to look over his shoulder at the rest of you with murderous intent. Then the creature opens the double doors and steps into the next room, out of (line of) sight.
The brain cat skitters down off the raised area, jumping between bodies and racing towards Drusk.
The bandits blink in complete surprise, as would the half-orc, were he still alive.
End of round: Rage has ended prematurely.
Notes: To take the Delay action, you’ve got to delay all the things, including moving, so Hildi stays in the tunnel. Jorin's move was a little long, but we'll call it Rage-induced and all for the good of the party (one caster down!) The tentacled monster and its brain cat were not surprised for some reason, and so got to act without Delay. Jorin’s initiative contest against the mind flayer was a clear win for Jorin, and so he got to act before the mind flayer did his thing to Jorin.

Jorin stands motionless over the ruined body of the foe split by his axe. After several beats of his heart, he turns and faces back down the corridor from which he came. His chest is heaving as he pulls deep, ragged breaths. "I...will...not," he drags the words through clenched teeth as he takes a few halting steps forward before breaking into a run. His eyes, heavy with sorrow, lock onto Drusk as he charges across the room.
Hildigrim, Ilena, and Pascal, having waited a beat, move in, on the attack!
Hildi climbs the stairs swiftly, letting an arrow go at the charging brain cat, and his arrow bites deep (12, 5 dmg). He then slides to his left, slipping past Drusk into the small room.
Ilena races up the stairs after him, flinging a dart at the brain cat (16), hitting it solidly (6 dmg), then squeezing past Drusk and Hildi into the same small room.
Pascal climbs to the top of the stairs and burps up a colorful burst of energy that lances out at the brain cat, turning into lighting and slamming it hard (17, 18 dmg!)
The brain cat, hit twice by physical attacks, is blasted into brainy goo and leg parts by Pascal’s attack.
End of round: No end of round activities

Drusk had the clearest view of squid face, and Jorin's recent reactions. Drusk will say the following (using comic book logic that a monologue can be said in the time between punches): "I think Jorin has beencharmed, or more likely, controlled. We might be able to snap him out of it if we jar his brain. I realize it will be difficult to hit due to the small target, but this needs to be done until he returns to normal."
Drusk will move SW (space underneath Pascal) then south until he is in melee range of Jorin. (Jorin may be charging north, so that will affect how far south Drusk has to move.) He puts away Joybringer. When Jorin gets within melee range, Drusk will punch him in the face.
Punch roll: Attack: 17 Damage: 1 (Unarmed strikes are 1+STR mod. Drusk would like to not include the STR mod against Jorin. If he has to, then the damage is 4 instead of 1. If Jorin is raging, then Drusk wants to do 2 damage, if he is allowed to pull his punch.)
