Ilena, ever curious, offers, "I'll accompany you to the palace Master Hildigrim, I've never been to a palace before... um... should I change into something more... formal...? I'd have to ask one of my friends at the Temple of Oghma to borrow something, I don't really own... well... hardly anything at all."
Drusk decides to Channel Divinity: Preserve Life. (Ilena is now up to 6/11 HP.)
"I would prefer to rest up, as Jorin suggested. Maybe in the morning go to the palace, and after that check out the tavern?"

OOC > No, the Palace is a government building, and you're likely going to one of the buildings near it, anyway (collectively "the Palace" but not The Palace, as it were). Now if you were going for an audience before the Open Lord, the Blackstaff, or the Masked Council, yeah, you'd want to look your best. But not this.

Before retiring for the night, Drusk waves to get Hildigrim's attention.
Drusk was absent-mindedly rapping his fingers on the small chest that was taken from the bandit/mind flayer's lair (post 707), realizes that he still has it, and thinks this would be a good time to see what is inside (after Hildi checks it for traps, with Guidance ).

Hildigrim waves his hand at Ilena. "No need for any pomp or circumstance," he says. "We won't be seeking an audience with anyone of import. What you're wearing is fine ... thanks to Drusk," he says, giving the half-orc an appreciative nod. When Hildigrim sees the cleric waving him over, the rogue steps up and takes a look at the chest. "Hmm," the halfling says, "let's take a look."
Checking for traps, investigation: 15 + guidance: 4
The small chest is unlocked and not trapped. Hildi opens it to reveal two small vials of pinkish potion (2 common potion of healing), and a mess of coins, which when sorted and stacked, turn out to be 16 dragons (gp), 82 shards (sp), and 250 small nibs (cp).
Regardless of whether you stack them here, or just look at the pile in the box, the contents elicit a whistle or two from some passerby or others in the common room of the Yawning Portal.
The spell books will do sorcerous Pascal little good, as his magic is innate to his gizzard and his gullet. :)
Jorin smiles at the sight of the coin, "Ah, a little extra fat on a job well done. You know, " he says, leaning back in his chair, his hands going up and behind his head, "we make quite a good pack."
"We'd better be ready in case that strange creature comes to take back its treasure," Hildigrim says with a bit of bravado coloring his tone. He looks at the sleeping Floon again and frowns. Then, noticing Volo, he says with energy, "Master Geddarm, in the sewers, we saw a creature with tentacles growing from its jaw. We also have reason to believe it took control of Jorin's mind for a bit. Have you any idea what it might have been?"
"Oh, well, there are any number of creatures with tentacles... I once saw what seemed like a giant frog, but with a great mass of tentacles as well, like to grab you and pop you into its mouth! I wondered then why it didn't use its tongue like other frogs... but, um, you'll have to be more specific."

"Humanoid, except for the tentacles below its eyes. Wears clothes."
Drusk hands one of the potion of healing to Ilena, and the other to Pascal. (If someone else wants one, they know who to ask.)
Drusk keeps the small chest, and adds the coins to the group fund. (If people would like to get their share of the coins now, I'll do the math. It would be a bit more than 7 GP per person. Otherwise, this can be used for tavern purchases. The amount of coins is in Drusk's inventory, under the custom item "party loot".)

At the mention of the tentacle creature, Jorin's face sours. He spits on the floor and says, "It was sorcery. He, or it, wormed its way into my mind. I tried to resist, but ended up giving Drusk a hit with my axe. Small though the hit was, it still made me feel quite bad."
"Oh," says Volo, and he blanches a little. He holds up his hand in front of his mouth, fingers downwards, and waggles them. "Like this? My, that would be an Ilithid, sometimes called 'mind flayers,' for the very reason you encountered," he nods at Jorin. "And if you survived an encounter with one my tales about you will not be doing you the justice you deserve. They are fearsome, and if one is in Waterdeep, there must be somewhat afoot."
He thinks a moment. "Did I hear say you would be visiting the Palace? You should call on the Gray Hands at the Blackstaff's Tower, they should be alerted to a mind flayer in Waterdeep."
"Now, I really must get Floon to his room." And Volo departs, Floon and the Yawning Portal employee in tow.

"Ilithid," Hildigrim repeats, wrapping his mouth around the strange, new word.
Or is it new? Intelligence: 8
What time is it?
"As our human and half-orc friends have expressed their desire to retire for the evening and visit the palace in the morning, I shall acquiesce," the halfling says with a contented smile.
Jorin claps Hildi on the back, "Aye, our fearsome band should rest." Jorin finishes up what's left of the food at the table, drinks as well, and with a contented look about him, heads up to his room.
(OOC: I was guessing that it would be mid-afternoon, with the hours of walking & careful searching through the sewers. Guessing that it will be easier to visit the palace first thing in the morning, rather than later in the day. In any case, I'd like Drusk to be healed up & 3rd level before continuing. )
