That night had been restless. Harivaldr tried his best to fall asleep, he knew he would need to be at his best for what was to come, but it hadn't come easily. This was it, his chance to prove his worth to his clan and to himself. And my companions, he thought, I'd never have made it this far without them. If everyone survived what was to come, hells, even if they didn't, he'd make sure to buy the first round of drinks for everyone; it was the very least he could do. Lying awake, he murmured a prayer to the gods. Any gods, he wasn't picky or even particularly devout. Sometime later, he awoke to the dawning sun, and readied himself for the day's trials.
The trek to Northwood's Rest was made in near silence. Save for an quick winking jest directed at Jarlas and his new steed ("Ah, riding high and mighty above us all, drottinn minn?"), Harivaldr's only sound was quietly humming a marching song. As they marched, he made sure to make the rounds between all of his companions, doing his best to offer an ear or a few words of encouragement as they all moved closer towards the fight-to-be.
On seeing Joseph and the others approaching, Harivaldr couldn't quite keep the grim look from his face, but he still tried his best to smile. "Good to see you Joseph, we bring ill tidings and good. We have found the source of the attacks on Northwood's Rest, we have a plan to deal with it, and these brave orcish warriors have agreed to aid us all to that end, but the evil that lurks in the Northwood, a corrupted dryad's tree, is coming this way as we speak. We do not know when it will arrive, so we must prepare quickly!"
Some sort of dreaded confirmation crosses Joseph's face, as if he knew seeing the remnants of hired adventurer's and a war band of Orcs could mean anything but trouble ahead. Fortunately they were here to cause trouble.
He steps forward and offers his thanks. "Nozamara, we accept your offer. The Northwoods can provide for both our people's but not if we don't protect it from common enemies." Nozamara considers his words and nods.
Discussions begin on defenses and fortification when Mrs. MacGregor comes running up to the group. "The forest, it is moving coming this way." Joseph looks to the SOUTH where the MacGregor farm is.
Nozamara steps up, "We will ride out to meet them now, before they reach the town. You fortify the Inn and the main buildings!"
Shanareen closes her eyes and turns to the NORTH. "The tree is there, not far." She looks to you (the party) "The tree will be less heavily guarded while it is attacking Northwood Rest. Now is the time to reclaim it or destroy it."
”Our paths are set then. The currents pull us apart. Village and clan shall stay and defend from the threat to the south. We shall ride to put an end to it’s source in the north. May the gods watch over us all!” Jarlas reaches a hand down to Shanareen “Ride with me lady fey. You shall need your strength for what is to come.“
“That’s not a bad idea. And the sooner we get Shanareen to the tree, the less time the villagers and the orcs have to defend the village.”
Nervousness still tingled inside the elf. This was one of the biggest threats she had faced, and her and Hari were the only two left of those who had originally started off on this expedition. While she didn’t have too much time to get to know them, she still felt the loss as each of them trickled away. In her culture, family meant everything, and they always protected each other. Ever since she had first teamed up with Holg and Jodon months ago, she realized how much travel companions could be like family. True, they had lost friends, but gained others in the process. She would defend her temporary family now.

This was it. In another few minutes, maybe half an hour or so if they were lucky, the twisted tree and its wicked wortling warband would descend upon them all, and they would finally know whether or not the little band of adventurers was up to the task of saving everyone in and around the Northwood. With everyone ready for what was to come, Harivaldr didn't feel the need to make any grandiose speeches, but he did allow himself to make a promise to whatever gods were listening. Today, we shall all return home. Aloud, he simply said, "My friends, we have come far to see this through, and we will see it through. Við erum ljósið, og myrkrið óttast okkur..."
The group of determined defenders venture in to the Northwoods in the direction that Shanareen directs. There is a stillness in the woods and the group is apprehensive wondering about each tree they pass. Shanareen stiffens almost as if she crossed some invisible line. She closes her eyes and convulses briefly. "It is very close!"
As she says this the fruit of the wicked wort begin to converge on Shanareen. 6 molded and blackened bipedal tree forms become apparent 30 ft away.

With their foe near at hand and the battle soon to be joined, Harivaldr turned to Dathyra and gave her some final words of encouragement.
"We are the light, and darkness fears us."
And with those words the skald of the Lauriklanni was off, longsword at the ready and a battle cry on his lips. He ran towards any clumped up group of the wortlings (avoiding friendly fire above all else) he could find, and with a snarled, "Þrumubylgja!" joined the fray.
Deadly thorns arc across the distance between the two groups. Shanareen clutches her shoulder where she is hit. She rolls off the horse and dodges the next incoming dart. The thorned missiles also come at Jarlas, he barley notices plinking off the mithril plate. Sea spray rears up as a thorn pierces its flank but then at the urging of Jarlas charges for Wortling line. She plows into the W4 and it shakes under the impact, Str save: 20 , it loses some leaves and branches but it remains rooted in place. Sea Spray moves away from the fray as Jarlas dismounts and presses the attack. His first swing is wide but the next slices off a chunk of blackened bark.
Hari encourages Dathyra as the enemy engages. He runs toward W1 and W5 calling up a thunderous force as he approaches. The Wortlings shake as the ground trembles under their roots. W1 Con save: 15 W5 Con save: 20 They remain upright but damaged.
Shanareen pulls the thorn from her shoulder and with a casting motion of her hand, her green leafy skin transforms with rough, brown bark like ridges. She move away from her allies by about 30 ft and snarls at the trees "Come get me!"
Dathyra shivered against the cold morning air. Biologically, elves just didn't have a lot going for them to protect against cold. Still, a part of that was her nerves. The past few days had been a whirlwind of action and danger. Wounds she had suffered from those previous days had mended well enough for her to still be useful in a fight, but she couldn't help but feel that she was significantly weaker than her travel companions. Hari and Entropy were seasoned travelers with their music and own strength to back them up. Jarlas was a seasoned fighter, it seemed. And she was...well, not those things, and that had clearly shown during their past encounters. The cut on her side from the fight with the bounty hunters had mended alright, but it was still red and sore, and it had brought up some unpleasant memories she had tried to work past. The bones that had been broken fighting the wortlings were fine, though her ribs were still a little bruised. In truth, she had been lucky to have survived these wounds, and she wasn't sure if she could take more like it.
Her heart started hammering against her chest when the troupe of wortlings appeared, and she couldn't help but let out a startled cry when Shanareen had been hit. Thankfully, she was still alive, and they had to keep her that way if they hoped to see this thing through.
Fear paralyzed her in her tracks then, and she wasn't sure what she could or should do. Is this how she really wanted it to end for herself? Running away felt like the wise choice, but it seemed that Hari had other plans. As if sensing the elf's terror, he had reminded her why they were here. Maybe he wasn't as religious, but he knew what needed to be said. She was here for a reason, just like all of them. Lathander had always guided her on the right path, and it was a path of light. Darkness should fear them.
Part of her wanted to follow Shanareen to ensure her safety, but she also had a loyalty to her friends. Plus, fighting off the wortlings ensured Shanareen's safety. She followed behind Hari as he engaged with two of the wortlings. If there was one thing that would take care of wood, it was fire.

The Trident pulses with radiant energy and W4 bursts into leaves and mulch. Jarlas reverses his stance and lashes the trident out to W1 and scores a deep cut along the bark. W1 howls are abruptly cut when it is trampled into the ground by Sea Spray. The horse continues to stomp on the lifeless husk.
After the two wortlings are dispatched there is a brief moment of silence. The ground is no longer shaking and you are looking around for the Wicked Wort. There is no sign of Shanareen and the other wortlings.
