Winter can deduce that Donavich speaks the truth and that when he says people can't leave the land, he means that everyone is trapped in this realm as Strahd rules this realm.
Ireena shrugs at the suggestion of going to Krezk, since she and Ismark has been discussing visiting Vallaki for some time. Donavich looks onto Winter. "I would suggest relieving your minds of that stress, young man. You're not the first adventurer that was deliberately brought here, and you won't be the last. All hope of escape will be ceased in just a short number of moons. Your souls will be trapped in Barovia for all of eternity. Every midnight, the souls of former adventurers that opposed Strahd will rise from the cemetery and march up Old Svalich Road to Castle Ravenloft. This is Strahd's way of tormenting those poor souls by reminding them of their failure. You don't want to be another statistic, trust me." Donavich bestows his wisdom unto Winter with a hint of defeatism, since he knows Strahd plagues this land.
Ismark calls out. "I agree. For now, let's commence the burial shall we? We can speak more of this afterward." he says while scanning the adventurers to see if they have anything to add. As they talk, Doru can be heard crying out again from under the floor.
Donavich insists for everyone to carry the the coffin outside, into the cemetery. Nixus decides to stay behind, and he'll remain in the church listening to the screams of anguish bursting from underneath the floor every so often. Donavich leads the pallbearers to a fence of wrought iron with a rusty gate that encloses a rectangular plot of land behind the dilapidated church. Tightly packed gravestones shrouded by fog bear the names of souls long passed. All seems quiet.
In anticipation of the burial of the burgomaster, Donavich has a plot prepared for him. He watches over as the pallbearers lower the coffin into the grave. Donavich cites a prayer to the Morninglord during the process. Ismark and Ireena have some parting words for their Father. Urgog, Thademar, and Winter are quiet as they haven't had a relationship with Kolyan whatsoever.
During this time, Nixus, who stayed within the church, grew agitated of the constant screaming and crying from underneath the floor. He decided to check each of the four rooms that are inside the church to investigate further out of boredom. The first room enters is the door on the left upon entering the church, which was Doru's bedroom. This dirty, lightless room contains a wooden bed with a straw-filled mattress. Mounted above the bed’s headboard is a wooden holy symbol. He enters the next above adjacent to this room, which is Donavich's bedroom. This dirty room contains a wooden bed with a straw-filled mattress, next to which rests a small table with an oil lamp burning brightly on it. Mounted above the bed’s headboard is a wooden sun-shaped holy symbol.
Nixus found nothing valuable in either bedroom and he grits his teeth as Doru continues to shriek from underneath. He marches back into the hall, and enters the second room on the right, which appears to be an office. An old desk and chair stand against the south wall, a wooden holy symbol mounted above them — a sunburst. A ten-foot-long iron rod attached to the north wall stands bare, suggesting a tapestry once hung there. Against the far wall stands a wooden cabinet with four tall doors. Lastly, Nixus walks into the remaining room adjacent to the office. Time and neglect have punched holes in the ceiling of this moldy room, which contains a few broken roof shingles amid puddles of water. In one corner, set into the floor, is a heavy wooden trapdoor held shut with a chain and a padlock. Doru's screams of anguish can be heard through the door.
While Nixus investigates the trapdoor, he can see that the padlock will require a key. Otherwise, he'll have to resort to an alternative method to opening the trapdoor. Nixus hears the doors of the hall being opened and many footsteps moving into the church. Donavich is leading the group back into the church upon completing the funeral of the burgomaster. The door is open, and Donavich spots Nixus crouching by the wooden trapdoor. Donavich barges into the room immediately.
"What do you think you are doing? Step away from there now!" Donavich calls out in a commanding voice as his eyes fill with rage. Ismark and Ireena step forth and grab onto Donavich lightly to prevent him from engaging Nixus further. Doru's screams from underneath the floor are noticeably louder in this particular room, as if it's booming from the trapdoor that Nixus is standing next to.
Winter looks alarmed at the proceedings, and takes a few steps away from the group, fingers gasping his Crystal arcane focus in case things go downhill.
Nixus' ears perk upwards as the priest confronts him. He raises up from investigating the door and looks towards the priest as he continues to speak in third person.
"Baelar thinks your son is in pain. You should put him out of his misery."

Urgog steps forward and plants himself near Baelar, his eyes fastened on the priest. "I suggest calming down. Baelar is just stating what we all are thinking. How long have you been hoping for a cure for your son? Don't you think by starving him you are doing more harm?"
During the funeral, Thademar would hear howls from Svalich Woods, which is quite normalized among the Barovians as Ismark, Ireena, and Donavich are accustomed to the raucous howls. He can also spot flocks of ravens soaring through the air periodically.
Meanwhile, Ireena raises an eyebrow as Winter casts Mage Armor on her. "What are you doing?" she asks in a confused tone.
Donavich looks between Urgog and Nixus. His eyes racing back and forth since the subject of Doru is sensitive to him. "I do not wish harm upon my son. I pray to the Morninglord day and night until I can get an answer on how to help my boy. The Morninglord will soon shine guidance upon me..." Donavich says in an unconvinced manner. Believing if he lies to himself enough that it will eventually become truthful. "The Morninglord will fix this. HE'LL FIX THIS!" He calls out erratically, as he tries to break free from Ismark and Ireena's grasp. They hold onto him firmly.
Without the key, the chain and padlock will require a successful Strength (Athletics) (DC: 12) check to break. Otherwise, the trapdoor itself as an AC of 12 and 20HP.
Donavich looks to Urgog and ponders for a moment. "Through extensive research, I haven't yielded any results. I believe a solution will arise soon because the Morninglord's light still shines upon the church." Donavich mumbles on as if he's in denial.
Urgog doesn't recall any information pertaining to vampire lore.

"Donavich good lad, how long has your son been afflicted of this vile curse? The chances of him being cured in a place like this are nigh. We should put him out of his misery. It's for the best." Baelar says with sad eyes.

Donavich shakes his head. "No. Absolutely not. Out of the question. I'll deal with Doru when the Morninglord graces me with his wisdom. Until then, you should leave." Donavich suggests wistfully, his voice getting raspy as he transitions into an emotional state.
"Are you saying we can't leave this town? We can't just walk down the road and go to Krezk or Vallaki as you mentioned?"
Donavich corrects Winter. "You can leave the town. It's the land you can't leave."

Winter turns to Ireena. "Ireena, maybe we should take you to the Abbey of Saint Markovia in Krezk for healing?"
Winter turns to the rest of the group: "How are we going to get out of here? It sounds like this Strahd character could be a problem."
Ireena shrugs at the suggestion of going to Krezk, since she and Ismark has been discussing visiting Vallaki for some time. Donavich looks onto Winter.
