"Oh, I didn't realize you spoke for the Captain, A'ro. Maybe you should let him state what he favors. Besides, we aren't smuggling a pirate into town, he would be staying on the ship. And, you aren't the judge. You say to give him sea justice, that could mean death. At that point it isn't up to us anymore."
"No, we bring him to the ship, if the Captain likes him, he stays on the ship. If not, we thank him for saving our asses, and escort him back to a secluded spot on the shore."
A’ro just keeps quite looking at the navigator, thinking of what to say“Won’t give into an argument here navigator, not in front of members of the crew. Vaken thank you for providing help wi’h the situation. The navigator has presented another option."
He pauses for a moment as he turns his head to the navigator and keeping a calm voice“but I do have to wonder how would it look if the crew of a pirate hunting ship got caught escorting a pirate, who is apparently known in Rumbottom, into the bay of Rumbottom by a patrol, after already having two offenses against them. It just looks better if it looks like we caught him and are turning him into an asset. Though you’re right the Captain can make the decision."
'Kay, keeps eyeing the food and drink, waiting for a moment to squeeze in and get a bite and a nip to steel her nerves, but the officers and those speaking for Orlys keep stepping to the fore, causing her to awkwardly dance forward and back again until she leaps forward as A'ro and Kestrell begin to quip at each other. She looks at the two bickering men and then up down at the food and drink and takes the moment to grab what she can hastily before looking up at the Captain and freezing for a moment, unsure what to do with herself.'
'Kestrell also picks up a plate and loads it up, as a sudden hunger overtakes him, he devours a second plate while listening to the discussion.'
"Captain Aundrey, who is this fair maiden in Fireshear, would we know of her or her family?"
'As A'ro and Vaken tell the Captain about Orlys, Kestrell hesitates, unsure if chiming in will help or make things worse. When he hears about Syrainne and the concern over the Shark's mooring license, he speaks up.'
"Captain, if I may...We, well, he, Orlys the Bugbear, didn't want to come into town so we came up with a plan for him to hide beneath the cliffs on the shore not far from here, and we would pick him up with a dinghy, and bring him straight back to the ship for you and the Bosun to meet, thereby bypassing the town's guards. And I must say, Orlys saved me not once, but twice, maybe more. And from giant spiders with huge fangs dripping with nasty, nasty, poison nonetheless."
'Kestrell trails off and shudders at the memory.'
[OOC]: Not sure if a roll is needed, don't want to interfer with A'ro and Vaken. But in case: Persuasion: 6. Edit: Hopefully it is not needed!
Looking at Kestrell with puzzlement for a moment, Aundrey finally smiles as though realising something humorous. With a rich, rolling chuckle, your captain says,'
"Her family? Oh, I see. Hahaha, no, you would not know her family name, I would think. I believe you misheard me, good navigator. She is an amazing woman, truly she is... but she's no lady, at least not as most nobles would count such things. Her surname is Witherington, but most who know her do so by her first name, as that is the name her crew call her by - Coral. Captain Coral of the Reefdancer, member in good standing of the Freeflag Privateers of Fireshear and scourge of pirates across the Trackless Sea.
Staring off wistfully out the aft windows, the captain seems lost in some remeberance as he strokes Token's neck and ears, eliciting a pleased *Ruff* from the puppy. As Kestrell continues to speak, this time of Orlys, Aundrey once again grimaces as the navigator recounts their plan. Eventually, your golden haired patron merely shakes his head, saying,'
"In another time and place, I MIGHT have considered your plan, Kestrell, though I'm a law abiding man at heart. If nothing else, I would shake the man's hand if I could for aiding my crew especially if what you say of his heroics is accurate. But the Cove Warden... I... WE cannot risk the loss of our standing here in Rumbottom, for a number of reasons, some of which I am not currently at liberty to discuss. If we were to smuggle this pirate, former though he may be or claim to be, and the Wardens were to become aware... Hells, after this morning's foul business, even keeping the fact of his presence in the area secret could prove enough for that intractable Golm to have us cast out, especially with the Dubol less than pleased at our delay in finding her lost ship."
[OOC] Anyone with the Sailor background or who is proficient in history may make a history check DC15:
History DC15:
Most who sail the Northern Trackless Seas off the Bitter Shore have at least heard of the Freeflag Privateers - the alliance of pirate hunting captains who sail out of Fireshear to sweep the waters of bucaneer scum with great skill and ruthless efficiency. The Freeflag Privateers are often spoken of in the same breath, though different connotations, as the dreaded Captains of the Frostwater Accord - the most infamous and feared pirates to sail these waters.
The most famed of the Freeflag Privateers is Captain Lyon Redmane, Dubron of Greybluff, Master of the Manticore, and grandson of the Privateer's acclaimed founder, Captain Kent Redmane. However, while the other Freeflag captains may not be as reknowned, you have nevertheless heard of Captain Coral, a half-elven swordswoman of noted repute who it is whispered can breathe beneath the waves and has been known to ride a dolphin into battle.
A'ro nods taking in what the Captain says"I understand sir, that is quite the predicament..."A'ro looks at Kestrell"I don't think the Captain would favor from smuggling a pirate into town Navigator. Additionally, I don't know what the we you speak of is since I disagreed with that plan."he turns back to the Captain"Sir, I recommend that we give him justice under law of the sea. We bring in a known pirate, our first successful catch as a crew and subject him to sea justice. No pay and he works as a source of intelligence for us, it also provides a crew member helping to fill one of our missing voids." A'ro just watches the Captain as he spins the tale for him about how their ship caught a pirate and convinced him to turn for a semblance of freedom.
Aundrey watches the interplay of words between his navigator and master of sail with apparent interest, though at the sense of growing tension between the two men a slight frown creases his otherwise handsome and composed features. However, as A'ro continues to speak the captain nods confirmation that he is indeed not in favour of smuggling Orlys into town. At the genasi's proposed plan of bringing the bugbear in as a prisoner to face justice, the young ships master tilts his head to the side as if in consideration of the idea's merits, before saying with obvious uncertainty,'
"A'ro has the right of it, I'm afraid. At least in regards to my unwillingness to jeopardise the standing of our ship and crew for this former pirate, regardless of his recent good deeds and your admittedly convincing testimonials. Could a similar compromise be reached with the Wardens in regards to a commuted sentence served aboard ship? Possibly, though piracy is likely to be considered in a different light to a heat of the moment killing in a tavern fight. Kay was granted some leniency as she was already a member of our crew when her crimes were committed, hence Drannick's suggestion to assert Ships Justice. Such would not be the case here, which could lead to different results... potentially fatal results for this Orlys.
Should I be convinced of this man's conviction and worth upon meeting him, and IF we were somehow to convince the Wardens to allow his service aboard this ship, then and only then should we be concerned with the terms and nature of that service. If what you say is true, then this man likely has far more to atone for than dear Kaitlyn."

"You raise some fair points, Kestrell, but alas while the Law of the Sea and Ships Justice means something even docked here as we are, we are still within the waters of Rumbottom, within the province of the Wardens as keepers of Shore Law and the Dubol as the recognised authority in these parts. Though I'll admit that Bosun Drannick, and First Mate E'strue as well, would likely have more of an idea on the possible consequences of these proposed actions.
Regardless, if we were to bring him onto the Shark, to ensure the ships good name, the deed would need to be done with the Wardens knowledge. That likely means a trial, or at least a standing before Golm. If this Orlys is willing to risk such, then my decision is to have you bring him here, while I send Lionel to petition Golm for a meeting aboard ship, though the Cove Warden would be within his rights to insist we go ashore. Regardless, this former pirate would be putting himself well and truly within reach of the noose should he choose to come with you here. Would he do so, do you think?"

A’ro just blinked as the Captain mentioned the object of his affection being a privateer, holding his tongue of any words he just takes a sip of drink. He listened as the Captain began to speak about seeing if the warden would be behind a commuted sentence ‘Probably not with it being the same man from the tavern’ he just shrugged“Certainly couldn’t hurt to run the proposal by him, as for Orlys it may be the only way to get him on the ship. He will have to decide if the risk is worth the reward.”
He just rubs his chin for a second and then looks around the room as if trying to come up with a plan and utilize their pieces in the right place. He just smiles“If we send Kestrell to explain the situation with Vaken, they might be able to convince him. Kay and myself could go ask the Warden and find out exactly what crimes the man committed as a pirate and depending on how bad they are we may be able to negotiate something with him. Explain how valuable of an opportunity this is to help aid in ridding the pirate scourge from Rumbottom. Is that agreeable or does someone have a better idea?”

Listening to all the arguing and discussing happening, on what Vaken feels is a simple topic, saddens him. Stepping forward again, Vaken nervously clears his throat,"I admit that I'm not knowledgeable in the ways and laws of most folk. In my tribe, there was a time for discussion and a time for doing what the chief said and I think it's the same here and I hope it's still time for discussion"
Looking to the captain."Sir, when you give an order I will follow it. We're talking about a man who risked his life to help us and saved multiple lives in the process. And in return you wish to offer him a gamble where his options are basically slavery and death?"Shakes his head,"Since I left my tribe I've been called uncivilized more times than I can count but nothing we did ever felt as uncivilized... as lacking honor as what's being proposed here."

Aundrey shakes his head at A'ro's suggestion, obviously thinking the master of sail in error on some point or another, as he says,'
"Yes, this Orlys will have to decide if he wishes to risk standing before the Wardens, albeit with our support such as it may be. However, I do not think you realise the severe condemnation that even a charge of piracy brings, let alone a confession of such. Up and down the Bitter Shore, there is usually but one penalty that a convicted bucaneer can expect to face. Shades of grey rarely factor into consideration... though I guess that we can try to argue the man's upbringing and such left him little choice.
Again, IF he should agree to the risk, I think it best if you bring him here quickly, where, along with the First Mate and Bosun, we MAY be able to concoct a plan that will forestall a lethal sentence... but such cannot be assured. If you wish this new friend to have any chance of joining our crew, then use one of our longboats and go quickly. As I already said, I can send Lionel, who is a well-liked local from these parts and once actually served with the Wardens, to inform the Cove Warden of the matter and request his presence aboard ship. Perhaps I will even send a missive to the Dubol in the hope that the affection that she holds for me, though strained, may count in our favour. Though I am loathe to play on such a slippery slope."

Apparently displeased with what he hears from Vaken, perhaps made uncomfortable by the somewhat accusatory tone or maybe just surprised at the the charge of dishonour from his usually agreeable cook, Captain Aundrey looks a bit taken back at first... but then the man's brow furrows into a rare frown as he replies,'
"A bad deed does not wash out a good one, Vaken. Nor a good one undo a bad. Even had this man saved the life of a Warden or indeed Golm's own, I doubt that such would on its own wipe a slate clean once scrawled with the foul charge of piracy. And to be clear... no matter his acts in assisting you, my valued officers and crew, I do not in any way consider the fate of this Orlys, who I have asked no boon of nor even met, commensurate with the well-being of this ship or her purpose in being put together. After willingly vouching for young Kaitlyn there, and then dealing with the angry Cove Warden over this morning's fiasco, I would hope that you'd see my willingness to even speak on this supposedly redeemed pirate's behalf and the possible implications of doing so as... if not honourable, then at least decent. More I honestly cannot offer right now, I'm afraid."

Smiling at the heretofore silent sail monkey, the captain shakes his head in the negative, explaining,'
"While we could do that, dear Kay, doing so would neither wash clean our complicity in aiding and abetting a confessed pirate before the laws of both land and sea, nor diminish in any way the risk to the Sharks standing in these waters were such to become public knowledge. And more to the point, while we sail for the Knuckles tomorrow as things stand now, we will be returning to Rumbottom within the week I imagine, and yet have more business in these waters before we eventually sail North. And regardless of where we sail, the Shark's reputation, OUR reputation, will follow us and must be one above reproach. I hope you can understand the importance of what I am saying, Kay, for that reputation is dependant on each crew member every bit as much as it is on each officer, or even the captain theirself."

The goliath hangs his head. He knew he had spoken harshly to his new captain and wondered how that might be used against him later. But the matter appeared to be settled, time to move on.
"By your leave Captain, I have business in town to attend to."
A’ro just smiled as the two sailors spoke up ‘looks like some people are finding their voice’ he couldn’t help but think to himself in pride. He noted the Captains demeanor as they talked and nodded as he explained the course of action he wanted to take“Sounds good Capt’in.”he just finishes the last of his food and drink. This surely was an interesting adventure. He just waited for the Captain to dismiss them so they could get on with the rest of their day.
Taking note that the debate seems to be over, but also noticing a few of the down trodden looks on some of your faces, Captain Aundrey *sighs* as though frustrated at something that he can't or won't reveal, before he merely says by way of dismissal as he calls senior sailor Lionel into his cabin,'
"I apologise if you think me harsh or unfair in what I say, my faithful officers and crew. But please, trust me in this if you would give your new friend Orlys any chance at all of joining us aboard ship. Otherwise... it may be best if he never lays eyes on the Shark... for she is sworn to hunt pirates, and hunt them she shall.
The lifeboat is yours to hoist up and put overboard as you will, though I would ask those of you going to be quick about it. While the ships mage's trap to catch the thieves that have been plauging us for the last few days unfortunatley did not yield results, E'strue spoke with one of the Warden's this morning while I met with Golm, and the watchman had something to say about a shady group of individuals up from Luskan who are staying at the Rusted Crate. One of them is being held for the stabbing of Syraine, but it could be that watching or questioning the others might lead to information or even the reclamation of our stolen gear.
Bring Orlys here if he will come, for E'strue, Drannick and I to meet and speak with, and then go to the Crate to see if these men from Luskan may not somehow be involved in the theft of our goods. Take care of whatever ships business or pressing personal matters that you have this afternoon or tonight though. I will ensure that nothing happens to Orlys until tomorrow morning when we will all meet with the Cove Warden. Dismissed."
As you all begin to leave, Lionel enters and approaches the captain, who leans forward to whisper in his ear.
[OOC] Any of you may make a perception DC15 check to overhear the captain's words to Lionel as you leave the cabin:
"Lionel. I need you to run a written message to the Warden's Lodge for me. Take it to watch women Beatrice. She will know what to do with it."

Orlys will take a look at the odd crab shell, but if he finds nothing, will settle into his little alcove to rest. Mindful of the tide, he does consider whether he is in danger of drowning, but a strong swimmer, he is not worried, and is sure the rising tide will wake him if it encroaches on his spot. Thinking the crew will return at night, he rests.
Picking up the cracked shield sized piece of crab carapice, Orlys notices the strong stench of ripe sea-food. A quick inspection is enough for the grizzled pirate to surmise that the shell's previous owner must have been of considerable size, perhaps as large as one of the fey spiders that they had fought recently.
The rising tide is noticeable to the resting bugbear, though the elevation of this crevice above the rockshelf outside makes it seem unlikely to the tide-savy sailor that all or even most of his hiding spot would become submerged. Hearing little more than the passing sea birds *squawking* as they fly outside overhead or pick shell-fish from the sand on the not-too distant pebbly beach, Orlys dozes for some time, enjoying the first respite that he's had in... he realises that he's not actually certain how long. However, perhaps it's the discomfort of his wet and rocky resting place or perhaps its the ever-present memory of a thousand scurrying legs and biting fangs, but regardless Orlys is roused from his short sleep while the sun still shines overhead, though it is clearly now lowering towards the Western horizon.
[OOC] Oryls can make a perception check DC10 and read the spoiler below if successful:
With little ambient sound except for the repetitive crashing of the tide-driven surf onto the rock shelf and the cries of hungry sea-birds, Orlys feels confident that he would hear anyone calling out from along the base of the bluffs. Taking periodic peeks out around the rocky walls of his crevice shelter, the still exhausted sailor spots no sign of any rowboats... but he does hear a familiar sounding *clack-clack-clack-clack...clackclackclackclack* sound coming from outside and around to the Southwest of his hiding spot. At first the goblinoid warrior wonders if he is having some kind of flashback to the horrors of the Spiderfey Cavenrns... but then he remembers the large crab shell that he found wedged at the back of the crevice.

A'ro just nods as the Captain give his orders, he just walks out with the rest of the group and looks to Vaken "I'll walk with ya mate, ne'd ta finish up some business in Rumbottom before we depart." he says looking down as his now hole ridden shirt from their adventure.
Roused, Orlys scoots to the front part of his hide and scans the horizon, water and land, just to get the sitrep.
Carefully moving to the exit of the barely ten foot wide crack in the bluff base where he has been hiding for almost two hours now, Orlys looks out at the heavy, curling white-tipped waves crashing onto the rocky stretch of beach. If not for a few copses of tall pines between them, the waiting sailor thinks that he might have been able to just make out the town of Rumbottom in the distance from his hidden vantage point. With a resigned *sigh*, Orlys is about to retreat into his temporary sanctuary once again when he hears a steady *clack-clack-clack-clack-clack-clack-clack-clack* that sends a shiver down his spine. Peering cautiously out at the surf pounded edge of the rock shelf thirty feet away, the suddenly on edge bugbear spots eight long, organe/red carapice covered legs pull the body of a large sunset coloured crab atop the shelf's pitted, stony surface. The tabletop-like shell of the crustacean is easily four feet across, and while the sea creature scuttles relatively low to the ground, the two armoured pincers that it waves before itself look formiddable indeed.
Barely daring to breathe, Orlys watches the giant crab's stalk-mounted black orbs swivel about, before the creature scuttles on an angled run first East, then West, stopping at shallow rock pools along the way. While now little more than twenty feet from his hiding place, the creature is giving no indication of being aware of Orlys' presence.

Leaving the captain's cabin to walk mid-ship, Kay catches sight of the lithe scurrying forms of the halfling twins Freya and Fillian in the mainmast rigging above. Stopping at the already open ships hatch, the sail monkey hears a call from behind as Virt hurries to catch up, saying,'
"Kay, I think that I will accompany ye on this task. While me last words to Orlys were not warm and me views on pirates and their misdeeds unchanged, if'n our Capt'n is willin to give him an opportunity, then I would see that hope, however slim, be given a chance to bear fruit. Orlys' courage in them blasted spider caves be deservin' o' no less. Besides, it is only right than an officer accomapny you should any awkward questions be asked later."
As you move midship to the already open hold hatch, you see the tall, thick limbed and scraggly brown bearded form of Nubrell leaning against the starboard rail while the old, skinny grey-stubbled Jart is tying off a mainstay line near the secured derrick, hold ropes, block and pulley. Stepping to the edge of the large opening, both Kay and Virt can see clearly see the long rowboat in the hold below, positioned for ready access amidst the well packed and stacked mass of barrells, sacks, boxes, crates, kegs and other assorted ships stores. The wizened old sailor dusts his hands off as he finishes the job he's currently doing, calling over to Nubrell even as he notices the officer and senior sailor's approach,'
"...Well if ye'd just move yer arse ta help me, ya big lummox, then we'd be done checkin' and tightenin' these lines in a right jiff. Then we could sit fer a quick game of rummy... or go look fer that fiery lass ye keep moonin' over. Ha!
Well, well, if'n it ain't our very own zombie slayin' lass. Hadn't seen ye around today, young Kay. What you been up... Oh, evenin', officer Virt. Anything we can be helpin' ye with?"
Explaining their need for the longboat, the more experienced ships mage readily supervises the two sailors as they attach the derrick and ropes, calling into the hold for a sailor below to attach the hoist lines as needed. Ol' Jart seems a steady and much practiced hand as with the aid of the grumbling Nubrell, he hoists the longboat up almost vertically before levelling her out above deck. Finally swinging the narrow, blue-grey painted vessel out over the Shark's portside rail, the sailors get the longboat into the water without mishap, though with a few bumps against the Sharks hull as the transport is lowered down beside her. Jart waves by way of apology to the angry shout from the gnome carpenter Yentil who is standing up on the foredeck near the bowsprit, before rolling a rope ladder over the side as the veteran sailor turns back to Virt and Kay to ask with his gap-toothed smile,'
"If'n ye don't mind me askin', officer Virt. Where ye be takin' the wee lass out to, and do ye be needin' any assistance? These old hands o'mine 'ave been tying ropes fer weeks, least it seems so. Could use a spell at the oars and a change of scenery, if'n I could be of any use that is. I'd say to leave that big lump here, but he may come in handy fer ballast. Ha!"
Virt appears to see no reason not to take the two sailors with them, so readily agrees, giving Jart and Nubrell their destination and the fact that they're picking up one passenger before returning, but supplying no further information. Shortly afterwards, the four crew of the Shoreshark are angling away from their mother ship, rowing past the watching sailors adeck the docked Foamrunner, heading in a Southwesterly direction out into the harbour around the still-bustling wharf and jetties, before the two sailors at the oars ably cut back to follow the shoreline South towards the not-too-distant bluffs that encircle that part of the shoreline and harbour mouth.

A’ro just keeps quite looking at the navigator, thinking of what to say “Won’t give into an argument here navigator, not in front of members of the crew. Vaken thank you for providing help wi’h the situation. The navigator has presented another option."
He pauses for a moment as he turns his head to the navigator and keeping a calm voice “but I do have to wonder how would it look if the crew of a pirate hunting ship got caught escorting a pirate, who is apparently known in Rumbottom, into the bay of Rumbottom by a patrol, after already having two offenses against them.

He listened as the Captain began to speak about seeing if the warden would be behind a commuted sentence ‘Probably not with it being the same man from the tavern’ he just shrugged “Certainly couldn’t hurt to run the proposal by him, as for Orlys it may be the only way to get him on the ship. He will have to decide if the risk is worth the reward.”
He just rubs his chin for a second and then looks around the room as if trying to come up with a plan and utilize their pieces in the right place. He just smiles “If we send Kestrell to explain the situation with Vaken, they might be able to convince him.

Stepping forward again, Vaken nervously clears his throat, "I admit that I'm not knowledgeable in the ways and laws of most folk. In my tribe, there was a time for discussion and a time for doing what the chief said and I think it's the same here and I hope it's still time for discussion"
Looking to the captain. "Sir, when you give an order I will follow it. But before you do so I want to express that the... solution... that it appears you and the Master of Sail are discussing don't strike me as honorable. We're talking about a man who risked his life to help us and saved multiple lives in the process. And in return you wish to offer him a gamble where his options are basically slavery and death?" Shakes his head, "Since I left my tribe I've been called uncivilized more times than I can count but nothing we did ever felt as uncivilized... as lacking honor as what's being proposed here."

'Kay backs away from the food tray and into the corner, trying to make herself small. When A'ro brings up her name she starts shaking her head. Finally, when A'ro asks for other ideas her eyes light up and she clears her throat.' "Ahem... W...Why risk the w...wrath of the Cove Warden at all?" 'Kay quiets and shoves a morsel of food in her mouth, looking away and avoiding eye contact with everyone as she chews.'
~♡~
