Magic is fueled by life, plant most often but powerful spells can drain the life of any living things. Defilers don't care about that and burn the life of Athas away in their quest for power, while Preservers take only what they need never draining the life completely from the soil and the plants .
It is said that wizards of old are responsible for the state of Athas.

T'chichka: As the day goes on and the sun beats on you all the guards are moving through the camp and are taking bets. The other slave that will fight against you is Mira a crazy halfling who wants to become a gladiator and tries to show it. She is a bloody savage.

Every night after the caravan stops moving, several of the guards (and sometimes Avram) set up a small fighting ring, and `encourage’ various slaves to fight one another, as a source of entertainment and an excuse for betting. Winning slaves are given somewhat better treatment, and Avram keeps an eye out for any slave that might sell well as a potential gladiator. Occasionally, slaves are forced into the fighting pit as a punishment as is the case for T'Chichka . Avram forbids any of the guards from taking part in the pit fights, although he encourages the gambling that goes on over the fights.
Each pit fight is carried out in a small improvised ring approximately 15” across. The ring is surrounded by cheering slaves and guards, and is constructed such that no fighter is ever out of reach of the other.
A weapon is provided: They are made of bone so have the -1 to dam and - 1 to hit.
In Athas weapon break. On a natural 1 or 20 there is chance that it breaks. (% depends on the type) . On a natural 20 you can decide to make max weapon damage but the weapon breaks for sure.
At the sun sets T'Chichka is pulled out of his pen and surrounded by the guards.
