Just before leaving the officer at the Inn (to then try to find his friends) he'll quickly say "Thanks for your assistance today officer. If I think of anything else where can I find you?"
After leaving, he goes into the Inn where he was dropped off, orders the strongest drink they've got, downs it in one shot taking a second to calm himself and thank the Fey New Moon that has blessed him through his life, and makes it way back to their base to find the rest of the group.
Officer Roberts replies "You can find me or one of my colleagues at the guard post near the entrance to Old Town. If you think of anything please do come and tell us." You dismount the cart and it begins to roll away. He turns over his shoulder as he leaves and says "You be careful out there." and the cart rolls around a corner and out of site.
I assume you head back to Eloise's house? If so, I'll let you know what you find there after we resolve what Rothnar, Ruhvon and Eloise are doing at the warehouse.
( ok for what they know they have one of their team members in custody or trapped or to be about to be taken into custody. This is going to be fun... it's a bad idea, but it's going to be fun )
Rothnar looks at the others.
"Only way I see we can help Laza now is to open that gate and give the guards what they are looking for. If you could make a distraction I can try to sneak my way towards the door and open it... you with me?" he asks to the rest of his companions.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The half-drow glances looks to Eloise and grins mischievously. "I think I can find something to draw their attention. I will meet you back at your place."He takes a deep breath in and exhales slowly. A wispy tendril of vapor is produced. It snakes its way toward the entrance of the warehouse where it begins to grow and expand.
[Fog cloud, level 2, to cover the area near entrance where the majority of workers and watchmen are milling about. Ruhvon will look for a nearby stack crates/barrels just inside or at the edge of the fog which no one is paying no attention to. With his tinderbox he will light a torch and leave it to catch the stack on fire. He will then shift into a riding horse and gallop away. Here's some rolls, if needed.
(I think your plan didn't have any bits you were likely to fail at, so you don't need the rolls)
The air in a large area encompassing the front of the warehouse shimmers for a moment before growing more opaque. After a few seconds a gentle mist hangs in the air and, after a few more, a thick fog clings stubbornly to the area, despite the slight breeze. Visibility in the fog is almost zero. Some of the workers and city guard cry out and you hear the sound of weapons being drawn. Nevertheless, you're near the edge of the fog and are able to set light to the stack of barrels you're hiding behind. As soon as the flames have taken, you shift form and gallop off down the street.
Thirty seconds or so later the barrels have burst into towering flame. It seems there was something very flammable inside them. The flames are threatening the buildings nearby. One of the workers has let the fog cloud and sees the light of the flames at the edge of the fog and shouts "Fire! Quick!" There's a rush of commotion as shadows of figures rush over to the barrels. Some leave to search for containers and water, others mill about in confusion.
It's complete chaos with silhouettes running everywhere. Rothnar and Eloise are about thirty feet away from the fire and have a short gap between them and the edge of the fog. As well as covering the main door, the fog also extends around the side of the warehouse, where Ruhvon described the window as being.
"Keep en eye on our backs" says Rothnar to Eloise. Taking advantage of the chaos, Rothnar moves trying to go unnoticed, open the wall, and get the hell out of there with Eloise so the guards can have their prize.
(OK, because things got slightly out of order, I'm going to retcon how this has all worked out so the timings make some sort of sense and the stuff between Laza and Officer Roberts still had a chance to play out. I'm going to say that Laza and Officer Roberts had already left by the time you arrived. But you had no way of knowing that when you arrived so your "rescue" still makes sense as a thing for you to try).
Rothnar, you attempt to slip through the fog to the door. There's a panic everywhere so you make it through the fog with no problem (no roll needed). You approach the internal wall and see the large gate in it is open. The guards Ruhvon described as being near the gate are missing (presumably fighting the fire). You sneak up toward the gate to get a look inside (I'll give you advantage because of the chaos): 21
You're able to approach the edge of the gate without being seen and peak around the corner. Inside, you see a human male that matches Sammus' description. He's sat in a chair in front of a wooden table and appears deep in conversation with a burly figure who Laza would know is Grimbold and the hooded figure. They haven't noticed you. The rest of the room looks fairly plain and innocuous to a quick glance. Various crates litter the room, but nothing that sticks out. You take in the room as a whole and notice that, as well as this gate, there's also a window high in one wall (about 20ft up). This would be on the opposite side of the warehouse to the street is about three feet by three feet. There's no sign of Laza or any of his shapeshifted forms you're familiar with.
Wondering if he could take care of the job right now, right there, Rothnar decides that, at least he has new information of how to enter the warehouse. He retreats and indicates to Eloise that they should fall back. He then informs here of what he has seen and decides to go back to her place, so they can reunite. Not seeing Laza gives him the hope that he could have make his escape after all.
The fact that his pet is no longer around is a good sign.
As they walk towards her place he asks.
"Tell me. What is the punishment needed for the death penalty in this town nowadays? "
You manage to sneak out of the warehouse without being noticed (I'll let your stealth roll carry over). As you move through the fog you get the impression that the fire is being brought under control through the combined efforts of the guards and the workers.
You meet up with Eloise and begin to walk back toward her house. As you do so, you ask her about the death penalty. "Ah, get the guards to do your dirty work, I like it. Honestly, the judiciary is pretty much in the pocket of the council and the council is in the pocket of whoever's paying them under the table. And you can bet a big player like Sammus is paying them well. So, to get him executed, you'd probably need to make it look like he'd done something very serious in a very public way so it couldn't be hushed up. Killing someone and treason against Nyalean or the Empire spring to mind. Or, I suppose, something that drove a wedge between him and some of the other big players in town or the Council would probably see them find some evidence of something nasty to get him removed, whether he'd done it or not." You continue chatting as you head back to her place and, when you arrive, Ruhvon and Laza are waiting for you.
(For your reference, it's now about two days until the meal you have booked at the Coiled Serpent)
As the rest of the party join him, Laza is sitting nursing a glass of wine, looks up and sees them enter, as well as seeing Ghani with the group. He pops the little weasel to him gives him a quick snuggle a bit of cheese, and says to the group "So I had a crazy encounter with our man... Almost had me over the fire. He's into some smuggling things here, and has a crew of his own for protection. Seems the Guard is also out for him, but we need his head..." and trails off to let his group catch up.
"Do we have the time to work such a scheme," Ruhvon grunts. "I'm sure the law takes it's time and we need to return to Dun Farum soon to make sure we still have an employer. Who ever is receiving these smuggled goods may be someone to turn against him. Is there a way to find out where his shipment was to?"
(DM: Did Ruhvon catch the name of the ship by chance?)
"Well it was worth a try " Rothnar says " I tried to frame him. Perhaps in jail it would be easier to get to him. Anyway I am glad that you managed to get away of there Laza. I got a clear shot at him, but there were too many people around to make it clean. "

Assuming you share that with the group, Eloise says "The harbormaster keeps a log of all the boats in and out of the harbour and their destinations. I think it's in a ledger in his office in the harbour office."
