As Erevan goes to pick up Smitty. he realizes that Smitty is just ashes, but his money pouch and his gem pouch are still there. Melted twisted metal is all that remains of his armor and other weapons.
Erevan lowers his head as he deduces that Smitty was cremated. He'll collect Smitty's money & gem pouch, and will try to scoop his ashes into one pile. He realizes he doesn't have any tools or equipment to contain the ashes. He'll walk back into the keep to approach Governor Nighthill and Escobert. "Apologies about my feline companion's actions. Are the folks doing well?" Erevan asks, looking around the area to see if anyone was hurt during the battle. "We'll also need a container to store the ashes of our deceased gnome ally."
Nighthill looks at one of his aids and nods. The aid runs off and returns a moment latter with a little shovel and a ornate urn and hands them to Erevan. "Place the ashes in here and we will put them in the royal crypt and give him an honorable funeral." The aid turns and moves back behind Nighthill. Nighthill looks at Erevan, "Your friend just did what we wanted to do. We have removed a powerful champion from their ranks, so all is good." He turns his head to Night Wine and looks at him sternly, "Though, if that family had been harmed, We would be having a different conversation and possibly putting you in Irons. Remember to think before you act, or you will not survive that long." He smiles to soften the blow, "But congrats on that feat. Now, all, we must rest until morning. The raiders have left the town. We will be sending out teams to search for survivors and take a stock of the damage caused. Chamberlain, please escort these three to the Guest rooms and get them food, hot baths and anything else they need. Once they have rested we will provide the promised awards." He turns and moves off, in conversation with Escobert.
The Chamberlain bows to Rha'el, Erevan and Night Wine, "Please follow me once you have collected your friends ashes and I will show you where the rooms are." Erevan nods and slips out and scoops his friend up into the urn. He returns and hands it to the aide and the party follows to the guest rooms. In the room, they have a large meal laid out for them, plenty of wine and hot baths.
A few hours later the aide enters the room as the party is waking up from a rest, "If the hero's are ready, the lord is in the audience room and ready to see you about the awards. I will be outside the door when you are ready to guide you to the Governor."
Erevan will take the time to don his armor and equipment. He'll also practice singing simple pitches to warm his voice up. Afterward, he'll exit his room to meet with the aide. "I'm ready to depart." Erevan says as he checks to ensure all of his gear is within his pack.
The aid nods and turns down the hall. He leads the group down the hallway towards the main chamber. As the party enters the room they see several Nobles and other dignitaries in small groups talking, but hush and turn to watch. At the end of the room Nighthill sits on a raised platform in a large black chair and Escobert stands to his right and back with a large smile on his face. As the party enter Nighthill stands and grins broadly at them and motions them forward. "My friends, come forward." He turns slightly and motions the pages forward. The party can see there are 4 pages standing in a row. 3 of the pages seem to be carrying large bags and the 5th has a long pillow with a black clothe draped across it. When the party lines up in front of the platform, Nighthill begins to give a speech describing the many feats that the party accomplished on the night before, extolling their heroics in the fight with the dragon and the half dragon. He also goes into detail about the great lose that was had with the Hero of the Sally Port met his end during the dragon fight and how he will be given the title of Knight Errant and added to the registry of heros.During the speech, the chamber is quite except for the Governors voice. He finishes the speech by calling each of the party forward starting with Rha'el.
"Rha'el of the centaurs, you have bravely assisted us this night, slaying many of the enemy. I present you with this bag of gold and a few healing potions."
"Night Wine of the Tabaxi, you as well have bravely assisted us this night, slaying many of the enemy. I present you with this bag of gold and a few healing potions."
"Erevan of the High Elves. You stand above all as the adventurer that stood first against that horrific half dragon. We honor you with this bag of gold and healing potions. In addition, as the adventurer that stood first against the threat, I present you this sword. This was my late wifes sword which had been passed down through her family for several generations. It is a Moonblade, a very rare magical sword that chooses its owner. When you entered the fort, it reacted as it use to for my wife. I present this to you." He removes the black cloth covering the large pillow the page is carrying. On the pillow is a long blade with a black hilt On the silvery blade is gold scroll work that is surrounding several runes. THe hilt of the sword also has gold scroll work. The sword appears to be about 36 inches long with a slight curve in the blade.
As Erevan picks up the blade, a new rune appears on the blade and he feels a calm presence in his mind. He feels acceptance from the sword.
Once the awards have been given out with toast being held and loud cheers, the gathering breaks up. A rather Tall fellow with reddish skin and flaming red hair approaches once Nighthill beckons him over. "Guys, I would like to introduce Master Drake. He is with a newly formed group that call themselves the Adventures Guild. They are a group that has went to several of the bigger cities and towns to study strange stones that have suddenly started appearing after the death of enemies that adventurers are killing."
Drake nods excitedly as Nighthill talks. "Yes, yes. These stones are most unusual. And when treated a certain way, they can create wonderful things. But sadly, at this time, only those that are adventurers can seem to make use of them. We are hoping that with time and study, we can use these to help everyone. Have you fine gentleman come across any strange gems?"
Erevan is humbled to be awarded a moonblade, which are quite revered among Bladesingers and Elvenkind. He appears as if he's about to come to tears. "I can't believe it... A Moonblade... Right before my eyes..." He smiles widely, the tranquil essence of the moonblade flows through him and he dwells in the solace.
"Many stories have been told among my folk about the legends of the moonblades. Your wife must've been truly special to have possessed one. I, Erevan Moonwhisper, the Silver Sabre of the Bladesingers, gloriously accept this gift. I shall honor your wife's memory to ensure the moonblade's legend remains everlasting. May I ask what your wife's name was?"
Erevan nods his head at Master Drake. "Our employer, Dawnguard Mathiall, did provide us with insight on these gems and provided us with gem pouches to contain the stones." Erevan then points a finger at his gem pouch.
Drakes eyes grow in size, "Really? Then we must talk at once. I have a list of services and Items that we can offer in exchange for these! Governro, if you do not mind, I would like to steal these guys away and talk with them." Nighthill chuckles and waves them off. "Once you are done with them, I will speak with them again. We are still interrogating the captives they brought in and will need to discuss a course of action." Nighthill pauses as he hears Erevans question, "Her name was Aelena. She was a high elf like yourself." A look of sadness crosses his features very briefly.
Drake nods and leads the party to his temporary shop. He provides them a list of what he offers for the gems and the cost in gems. The party spends several hours with him gaining their feats and stat points. "Remember fellows, " He explains, "You will need to sit with these charms for a few hours for their power to soak into you and learn these abilities. (Long rest) You can do multiple at a time, which is good considering the amount you are able to get here. Other places with Adventure Guild members may charge a different amount for their services and they also have different abilities that can be bought."
Erevan heeds Drake's insight on the gemstones. "Time is of the essence. While we wait, do you by chance know if our services could be employed elsewhere? Not certain if any neighboring villages were being attacked by dragon cultists as well."
Drake looks at the party and skakes his head. "There are rumors that there have been other attacks. We have not received any conformation on this here."
The party spends several hours with the charms and talking among themselves and with Drake. As they sit, they feel a flow of power flowing into them from the charms that they have. After about 8 hours, the charms turn to dust and they feel the skills knowledge take root in them. They stand and move to the door, Drake thanking them for the chance to study the gems. He leads them back to the Governor, who looks like he has slept since they last saw him, and is now in deep conversation with Escobert and several high ranking members of the militia. The Governor looks up as they enter and waves them over.
"Just in time. Fellows, we have determined the cause of the attack. We learned from the prisoners that you captured and we capture the following: They are working for the Cult of the Dragon and for the “dragon lady” (Rezmir), and that they’re after loot. They’ve been raiding communities around the Greenfields for loot, and they have a camp with several dragon eggs being watched over. The great hoard of loot will usher in the reign of the Queen of Dragons. The camp must be tot he south east of here as several saw the raiding party head that way when they left last night."
He looks at the party a moment letting them digest the information. "The trail that the raiding group took is easy to follow. I would send a force after them, but we need more information on what we face before doing so. A small party could easily follow them and gather information. Would you be willing to do this? We could make this an official request and offer 250g for each member of the party. We would need the following information: Location of the camp, number of raiders there is in camp, who is leading them, the motivations behind these attacks and the next target. Secondary and by no means important, if you find any treasures from the town, please return them. We can offer a bonus for any treasure located and returned. Also, any gear that you need will be provided by the keep."
He pauses and looks at the party expectantly. "Will you be willing to do this?"
"I'm content with reconnaissance. I know Night Wine will excel at it. Can't say the same for Rha'El. We're certainly up for the task and we'll report back with the information as soon as we can."
Nighthill grins broadly, "That is great to hear. The quarter master will supply you with whatever you need to go on this mission. You will need to set out at first light on the trail."
From the corner of the room 2 monks approach the party while Nighthill is speaking. A young man walks forward, limping heavily on his bandaged left leg. “I hear that you intend to follow the raiders and see where they’ve gone. I’d like nothing better than to come with you, but in this condition, I’d slow you down. In the midst of all this tragedy, there’s no reason you would have heard about the fate of my master, Leosin Erlanthar, but it’s important you know. He is a monk from Berdusk. He disappeared last night, after we fought a particularly savage battle against raiders. A few others and I fought our way to the keep, barely. Leosin didn’t make it at all. We went back this morning to look for him, but all we found was his broken staff and this choker, which he always wore.” The second figure stands back letting the young Monk speak. Tall, slender, with an elongated neck and scaly legs ending in the adamantine claws. White feathers with some blue trip around the head and wings (blue heron), wearing a simple tunic and carrying a pack slung over a shoulder. “Leosin has been investigating these raiders for months. I fear that he might have tried to infiltrate their group when they retreated, or worse, was captured and carried away as a prisoner. No one understands these bandits better than he does, and his knowledge will be invaluable against them. When you find their camp, please look for any sign that Leosin is there. One of my brothers has already departed for Berdusk to bring back help, but it will be many days before help arrives. Anything you can do before then would be a godsend.”
The aarakocra steps forward, adjusting a tattered pack covered in fishing lures.
A raspy, screeching voice pleads "If you intend to face the raiders then I will join you in rescuing master Leosin. He taught me when I was but a fledgling, almost twenty years ago."
The bird taps his armored claws on the floor "I earned my spurs in my youth but even at my advanced age I can handle myself. I can provide eyes in the air, claws on the ground, and fish out of the river."
