Thomas holds fire as they assess the new found loners, still concealed deep in the brush, but ready with his crossbow to transfix the older man if circumstances warrant. When George let's fly the warning shot, Thomas twitches and barely holds from letting his own quarrel launch. While he is waiting, he instructs Gamliel to fly overwatch and report mentally anything unusual nearby.

“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar
As the arrow flies past his head, Matthias stop his forward movement. You see disappointment and annoyance flash across his face -- the impression you get is that this hasn't been the first time he's been in a similar situation. He raises his hands slightly, showing his open palms in the group's general direction.
"'Ello Sarah and co., name's Matthias and that over there is Ernie," he states as he gives both Sarah and Aleister a single nod each. He continues, "You can call me 'Em.' Hitchhiker's is good if you like that kind of humor, but to be honest I haven't done much reading in the last couple years." As he lowers his hands you can read toma-hawk on his fingers.
"If you don't mind me asking, who are you and why are you tracking this group? I don't recognize your faces -- though that triple image thing is a neat trick," he asks as his eyes tighten.
From his hiding place, Thomas very quietly casts a Detect Magic and scans these new people for less visible threats or illusions.

OOC- It's pretty short range, so not likely going to pick anything up otherwise.

"The people we're following are part of the PPA or Portland Protective Association. It's anything but. It's one man calling himself a king, sitting upon a heap of corpses with his cronies, who playing at being knights. They're carving out a kingdom by taking slaves and territory by force. Our settlement, along with a few otherwise peaceful communities, are under threat. The prisoners are members of one of those communities."
Sarah tries to keep a neutral tone but rather fails. The stories she'd heard of the PPA, and the faces of the few victims that had escaped to tell their tales, were too fresh.
Matthias and his friend are following the PPA troops because a local hunter had gotten a goof look at some of the prisoners and recognised Chuck and Judy Barstow. These are high ranking members of the Clan McKenzie. Detroit has good relations with the Clan so Matthias send messengers to their territory to let them know what was happening and he was following to keep track of where they went.

"Ah, the Pee-Pee Asses, we have some business with them as well. Seems their ego has no bounds," Matthias responds. "Though you lot seem to be better suited for this kind of tracking work than us, being that you caught us unawares and all."
Em shifts his balance and looks back at Ernie before continuing, keeping eye contact with Sarah, "You think it possible for us to sync up? You obviously have a group, and well trained at that. Could be beneficial for both of us."
OoC: (to DM) would i know if the PPA got a hold of some quantity of my contraband? If so, he doubly has reason to hunt them.
With what seems to be an agreement to join forces, Thomas rises up from his hidden spot and puts the Disguise magic back into place, revealing someone who looks terribly unprepared for the new world post Change - dressed in nice jeans, warm jacket , casual shirt and such. . "Well, I'm glad that's settled." He says, as he puts the bolt away and uncocks the crossbow. "Joining forces gets my vote against the PPA. The alternative is not as much fun."

George moves position before breaking cover 'Happy to have the help - but we should keep moving - would like to get ahead of them and ambush the train if we could and we're running out of time'
"Whoa, you all keep appearing out the bushes," Em chuckles. He motions to Ernie to bring their gear and then moves to join the group.
"Have you guys been able to make it out to Salem since everything went south?" he asks as he straps on his backpack and holsters his bat (covered in doughnut weights) into a makeshift sling attached the the bottom of the bag. Ernie has both the bow and the polo mallet.

The PPA frowns on smuggling, especially smuggling people OUT of their territory. You and they are not on friendly terms.
You join with your new acquaintances and move on after the PPA group.
You push hard to catch up and at mid afternoon your eye in the sky reports a group of bodies ahead. There are twelve and they have been striped of anything of value plus their eyes and livers have been cut out and are missing. These are the PPA troops and they where slaughtered to a man. The McKenzie captives are not here.
Once we know the area is clear Em would like to look at the dead and see if: 1. he recognizes anyone; 2. try to discern what was used to kill them and what was used to extract their livers.

Aleister will use his tracking skills and see what he can discern about the massacre. "Kinda reminds me of Liver-eater Johnson, he'd eat the livers of his enemies, Crow Indians, as they believed it gave them the power of those they killed."
He looks around, "I would think eaters would of chowed down on the tenderer parts if they'd were the ones who did this."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The sight is utterly sickening. Sarah has to swallow back her gorge several times as she checks over the bodies trying to remember any sign this might have had an arcane motive. Or anything else as to what happened.
"We should check for magic," Sarah suggests. "It's interesting the McKenzies aren't here. Why were PPA slaughtered but not them? That worries me."
George sighs and mumbles under his breathe 'Seriously, what has this world come to...'
'The fact the prisoners aren't here could be good news - this could have been a rescue but the MacKenzies. It's the liver and eyes that worry me - it's clearly deliberate, maybe even ritualistic.'
