OOC: So uh... does Yuno's 17 Insight tell her anything about Gedyr's morality? @Burgen
Also Yuno nervously says, "I-I think our plan is to go to town and talk to some merchants... The bandits attack them so we're going to... protect them."
Also, for anyone who missed it, this is Yuno's description:
Her voice is soft and delicate. It's almost like a whisper but louder. Yuno's long brown hair goes down to between her shoulder blades. Her eyes are deep blue. In the proper lighting, her eyes appear purple. She stands at 5ft 4inches tall. Her skin is fair. She is wearing clothes that are typical of a town girl: A brown dress with a long, wide skirt and a white apron in the front. She is a little on the thinner side.
ooc: Assuming we spend some talking on the trail Gedyr does not hide his feelings on the matter.....
He believes that any bandits that use violence as a threat against others should expect the same in return and has no issue with striking first against someone who does such. He is not a Lawgiver, however on a practical note if the enemy surrenders he wouldn't object to bringing them in alive (with no expectation either way if they are to be executed or not). Having someone surrender instead of fighting to the death will also save the party, so it is a practical stance. He is a hunter, and does not believe in being unnecessarily cruel to prey, either humanoid or beast. -----However undead and those involved with them will likely find a swift end, as he finds it abhorrent to the natural order.
Also Yuno nervously says, "I-I think our plan is to go to town and talk to some merchants... The bandits attack them so we're going to... protect them."
"Sounds like the plan," confirms Elwin as he shifts the spear on his shoulder. He wished he had gotten started adventuring a year earlier; he had been told that one of the rewards he would soon acquire as confirmation of his honest intentions with his pact was a "pact blade." He'd be able to dismiss and summon a weapon at will, a neat trick which would have helped lure bandits in. As it stood now though, he wasn't sure that their group looked all that defenseless... which meant the chances of running into their prey early was closer to "none" than "small."
Still, determined to seek out whatever opportunity he could, Elwin scanned the surrounding land as they traveled, almost trying to will an encounter into being.
"Well, then let's get to walking." Kosh hefted his great sword as they started down the road to town. "Yuno, will you be alright with the violence this time? Remember what happened with the Wolves..."he says with an amused smile.
Elwin glanced over at Yuno as they walked, but didn't say word. He was already wondering why someone who seemed so nervous was out adventuring... he just figured she would do what needed to be done in combat. But if she actually had trouble with violence....
"I really hope we're not going to have to be babysitting her to keep her safe when the time comes," he continued thinking. "*$#%, if she actually freezes up... well, she chose this path. If she falls, she falls."
Gedyr hitches his pack and get's ready to move out. "So bandit fingers is it? If you gentlemen will excuse me, I was not privy to all prior conversations. Do we have a plan now?"
"And to those I have not met, I am known as Gedyr A DurLhuig, however you may refer to me as Gedyr "
"And Hellos to you as well as the rest. I am Janter Burlumpkin. I suppose I hadn't yet introduced myself formally yet either." He says, bowing to each of this group, before noticing the new posting going up on the board. He quickly scrambles to directly scratch in the new information with his wood carving tools next to his previous glowing words inside his shield.
Capture: Half-Orc Bandit, fangs broken off, - RockJaw Dire Wolf, for testing Jackelwere, for questioning Kobold with magic dagger, wanted for theft Requests: Stirge Sac-10gp, multiple wanted VineBlightRoot-40gp Orge'sEye-105gp GreenHag'sBag-220gp
He then runs to catch up with the group as they go, asking "Does anyone know what exactly a Hag's bag would be? I know what the normal body parts of ears and fingers and such should be, but am quite unsure on this one. It also seems there are a few bandits they want to speak to at various lengths, so the question becomes how to capture, far more than directly carry out extreme prejudicial sentencing. That's sure to avoid any unnecessary washing of bloody garments as well, or any extra gruesome tasks of separating said body parts from their owners." He nods a little and talks to himself: "I wonder what sort of dagger this kobold made off with? There isn't much to go on from such a brief bounty post." Then again to the group walking ahead of him, "And What's this talk about wolves? Not rabbid ones, I hope? "
He couldn't help but laugh. "You's a chatty one, yeah?"
He paused, to try to answer everything the gnome had said. After a second, he just stuck to what he remembered:
"Not sure 'bout that Hag's bag, myself. Guess we'll need to ask a Hag. Far as the wolves go, don't tell me you's scared? As long as we kill 'em 'fore they kill us, we should do OK. Healers can take care of any disease."
A sudden thought crossed Elwin's mind.
"Um... don't suppose any of ya's got healing medicines or magic, eh?"
The party travels to Saltmarsh following the roads. Along the way, you see the route the guards spoke of. It just has a singular sign saying 'Danger, bandits in the area.' Although the patrols do check when they come around, it is not frequent enough. The party arrives at the Wicker Goat and ply their protection for the traveling merchants. After an hour of talking, a young man asks for your help. He says he is relatively new merchant, having only done a few trades here and there. He wants protection as he heard talk about the danger from the Dreadwood.
Yuno discusses with the group so that the man can't hear, "M-maybe... the more intimidating of us could hide with the nice man's goods? The bandits might not attack if they see five fully armed and strong adventurers walking with him?" She then seems to hesitate and fidget a bit before saying with words shaky with anxiety but tipped with conviction, "I... I could be in the open... with the nice merchant... Bandits... like picking on helpless young girls. Me being there... might encourage them to attack... they'd have a easy hostage." She looks scared to be bait but also willing and determined. Is it because, though these may not be the same bandits (Are they the same bandits, DM? Guess we'll find out later), bandits killed her sister and she feels that she must kill these bandits to avenge her in some way?
@Elwin because you rolled 19 on Insight a while back
As Yuno talks about her plan to be bait and looks scared, Elwin feels that something is very wrong with her. Yuno's mannerisms, her words, her personality... something feels off. Like things don't line up. Add to the fact that someone who looks like your average town girl and who is this timid and nervous, especially if she has trouble with violence, is out adventuring and trying to kill bandits when she can't even hold her rapier properly, things about her just don't seem to add up. Elwin has a feeling that there's something more here that he's missing but he doesn't know what it is.
Kosh smiles at the young man, his smile is something that approaches the uncanny valley. Someone, at some point, described a smile to Kosh and he's trying to mime that description. "Then we will guard you on your way to the fort. I am sure nothing bad will happen."
"Of course, we need to talk coin, too," added Elwin.
"We'd need to get the bounties for any bandits that do attack, since we'll be stopping them instead of lettin' 'em touch you. All their gear and loot, too. But as they might be destitutes... we needs to charge you a fee, just in case. Lessee, for a one-way trip... how's 50 gold apiece sound, half upfront?"
Kosh blinks in surprise at Elwin and turns to the merchant, "I will take no gold from you. I am here to do The Work. Bounties are enough to keep me fed"
(Isn't 300 gold what someone probably makes in a year?)
Yuno, not wanting to lose the Merchant's willingness to be... protected from bandits. Blurts out, "Me neither! I... I can do well with j-just the bounties."
Yeah, he's haggling, and starting out high. Maybe too high....
However, the DMG has some skilled hirelings costing as much as 2gp per day, in non-life-threatening conditions. All things considered, 5gp each for protection by skilled warriors is probably a good deal for the man, provided he retains our service for the entire day.)
He barely avoided dropping his jaw at Yuno and Kosh's declaration. Working for FREE?!! Even ignoring the silliness of it, it certainly undercut his attempted haggling. He might actually have to start with a fair price!
"That's what I get for jumping the gun on pricing, I suppose."
He turned back to the merchant, smiling.
"Ah... *tsk*. I'd forgotten we had a couple 'mong us who are... ah... working out some karma. Our rates have dropped cause of it. So, how's about a flat fee of 30gp for the day's protection from the lot of us? Quite the deal, yeah?"
"I don't know about disease and such, but I can heal a bit here and there. Though, I prefer not to have to in the first place." he says, tapping the shield accross his back. " As far as chatty, I say what needs to be said, plus a few nuances on occasion to make sure the point crosses what it needs to bring with it. Maybe a bit extra sometimes."
Janter listens to the negotiations with the merchant and offers "I, too, don't need much, just enough to keep me fed and this chain oiled. I'm only here to see what sorts of artifacts the bandits might be able to lead me to. That's my only real need." He nods in thought. "Yes indeed, 30 split among us would tide over our base needs."
"Sir merchant, Have you by chance seen anything strange on your previous travels getting here? And is there room in your cart to hide some of us along the way? I presume you do have a cart, empty or filled with things?"
An inward sigh of relief. If ALL the others had offered free service, he'd have to wonder if some enchantress was playing games with him.
Elwin glanced over at the girl. She seemed... fidgety at the asking of payment. He considered. As eager as she was to take out the bandits that had hurt her family, he was starting to wonder. Was she really a learned mage, with the weapon just being for backup? Perhaps it was magical, and transformed her into some sort of terrible horror perfect for the job?
In either case, he caught her eye for a split second and gave her a wink, trying to convey assurance. At 30 gold, he really didn't expect the merchant to balk. If anything, where he was from, it would have seemed more suspicious to offer such a pricey service for nothing.
"Sir merchant, Have you by chance seen anything strange on your previous travels getting here? And is there room in your cart to hide some of us along the way? I presume you do have a cart, empty or filled with things?"
Elwin nodded his head at the idea of hiding in the cart. The girl could likely ride in the open, and as she herself suggested, act as bait. Normally Elwin would have second thoughts about that, but between her eagerness, and it being her suggestion, well... it did make sense.
