(Hmmm...looking at the post, you're right. Don't know if I misread it, or if the dice roller changed something, but Rand took less damage than I thought! Huzzah - and thanks for the clarification =) Now I just need Rand to make his attack so we can move on...otherwise I'll roll it for him!)
Bankur raises his shield to block the first attack from the Redbrand, which glances off the shield with a satisfying "thunk". He then executes a perfect parry that catches the second attack with his mace, flaring the weapon out wide then reversing it's course in a counter attack aimed at the Redbrand's now exposed left side.
"You nor your foul master will kill any of us this day!"
Attack: 16 Damage: 5
(Rhan - I'd like any damage I do to be non-lethal. I'm trying to knock him out)
(A mace is good for that. The rules merely state that you can elect to knock an enemy unconscious rather than finishing him/her off, so I'll keep this in mind when you eventually prevail =) The redbrand has taken 6 damage...Penumbra and Salty Joe are up!)
Penumbra sheaths her rapier and charges in through the door, once through she leaps at the Redbrand. "Raaargh! Threaten us again cowardly slaver! It won't save you!"
Penumbra is attempting to grapple the man. Athletics: 17
Rand drops the last redbrand, his sword cutting through his studded leather armor and piercing his gut. The man falls to the floor, slowly bleeding out. (Combat over - 50XP each. This guy is done for but not dead...yet.)In the cells are four people - two women in the southern cell and a man and an adolescent boy in the northern one. All are dressed in plain gray tunics and have iron collars fitted around their necks. Additionally, the man has a strange gag around his mouth, and his fingers are individually bound to each other, as are his wrists and elbows! (The cell doors feature simple locks requiring thieves’ tools and a successful DC 10 Dexterity check to pick. The doors can also be wrenched open by brute force with a successful DC 22 Strength check.)
"Thank the tiny gods! You have come to rescue us, yes? Please, release us from these chains and cells! I am Mirna Dendrar, and these are my children, thirteen-year-old Nars over there and eighteen-year-old Nilsa. A few days ago, the Redbrands murdered my husband, Thel, for defying them. That night, the gang returned and abducted tus from our home! The gang plans to sell us into slavery...or worse."
The Dendrars are grateful for rescuing them, but they can’t provide much information about the Redbrand hideout. All they know is that the boss is a wizard (though they haven’t met him and don’t know his name), and that he has “tall, furry monsters with big ears” working for him.
The other man strangely bound, stands up and looks imploringly at you, gesturing towards the gag in his mouth. (Enter Valefor Falcoren!)
Penumbra quickly abandons the dying Redbrand and moves to free the captives.
Dex checks to pick the locks: 1415
She hesitates only for a second before removing the man's gag and cutting away his biindings.
"I don't know who you are, but I if these scum are your enemies then we have something in common. Don't make me regret freeing you."
Turning to the woman and her children she says,"You will not be slaves, and when my friends and I are done here you won't have to worry about Redbrands ever again. But right now we need to get you out of here."
"Yes, we have come to rescue you and we aim to rid this land of this Redbrand threat so that no more families must endure this kind of suffering. I'm sure Penumbra can have you out of those cells in short order. I am going to make sure this low-life doesn't pass into oblivion before we have the chance to extract some information from him."
Rand searches the redbrands for anything on them and will remove a belt or even one of their cloaks to tie the dying man's hands behind his back. He then calls upon his inner strength and touches the dying redbrand to restore 1 hit point. "There. That should stabilize this one so that we may interrogate him."
The bandit coughs weakly, and answers Salty Joe's more-than-implied threat. "Our leader is a human wizard known only as Glasstaff, because his magic staff is made of glass. His chambers are in the western end of the stronghold. Also, I think he takes orders from a mysterious figure called the Black Spider." The man winces in pain, but continues after another threatening glare from the half-drow. "I hear this Black Spider hired us to frighten off adventurers like you and intimidate the locals for some reason. The Black Spider sent some bugbears to reinforce our hideout and provide extra muscle...so you might want to run back to wherever you came from now before those monsters get you."
Mirna confides in Penumbra as she is set free, "Though my family has nothing to offer you as a reward, I know where a valuable family heirloom is hidden. When I was a young girl, my family and I fled from the town of Thundertree after undead overran the place. My family had an herb and alchemy shop in the southern part of Thundertree, and my mum used to keep an emerald necklace hidden beneath a section of storage shelves. Although I never dared to return and retrieve it, if you find it it's yours. Thank you again for rescuing us and ridding the town of these horrible redcloaks! But now I just want to go home. Can you take us there?"
Clutching her younger brother, Nars, Mirna's daughter Nilsa also implores you to help return them safely to town.
Salty Joe turns back to the group, regards the new fella, and friendly waves to to the captives. "Is that enough for everyone? I dont know about you guys but I can still go a bit further. I've been saving some nasty stuff for this Asstaff dude."
"I would like to continue on as well, Salty, but I think we need to get these people out of here first. And right now, I would like to echo Penumbra's question. We were hoping to find Mirna and her family. But you (nodding toward the man who was more meticulously bound than the rest) are a surprise. Who are you? How did you come to be in this place?"

Tidbits:
Quilline pulls Rand aside while Carp is giving his directions and says, "If you truly be adventurers, then you should visit my old friend Reidoth the druid, since there’s not an inch of the land he doesn’t know. Reidoth recently set out for the ruins of a town called Thundertree, just west of the Neverwinter Wood. It's about fifty miles northwest of Phandalin, but I can give you directions so you can easily find the place, if you want."
Sildar: Of course, this means driving out those Cragmaw goblins, too. I will give you a 500 gp reward if you locate Cragmaw Castle and defeat or drive off the tribe’s chieftain.”
Sildar: “I also mean to find Iarno Albrek, a fellow member of the Lords’ Alliance,” he continues. “I questioned several locals today, only to learn that he disappeared while exploring the area around Tresendar Manor about two months ago, shortly after arriving in Phandalin. I ask you to investigate the manor and the surrounding area to find and bring back Iarno — or what’s left of him, if something killed him. Iarno is a short, dark-bearded human wizard in his thirties.
The three Rockseeker brothers (Gundren, Tharden, and Nundro) recently located an entrance to the long-lost Wave Echo Cave, site of the mines of the Phandelver’s Pact.
More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver’s Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge (called the Forge of Spells), where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby human town of Phandalin (pronounced fan-duh-lin) prospered as well. But then disaster struck when orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path. A powerful force of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magic treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing spell battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave was lost.
Klarg, the bugbear who leads this goblin band, had orders to waylay Gundren. Sildar heard from the goblins that the Black Spider sent word that the dwarf was to be brought to him. Sildar doesn’t know who or what the Black Spider is.
Gundren had a map showing the secret location of Wave Echo Cave, but the goblins took it when they captured him. Sildar believes that Klarg sent the map and the dwarf to the chief of the Cragmaws at a place called Cragmaw Castle. Sildar doesn’t know where that might be, but he suggests someone in Phandalin might know.
Sildar’s contact in Phandalin is a human wizard named Iarno Albrek. The wizard traveled to the town two months ago to establish order there. After the Lords’ Alliance received no word from Iarno, Sildar decided to investigate. Sildar tells you that he intends to continue on to Phandalin, since it’s the nearest settlement.
Redbrand: "Our leader is a human wizard known only as Glasstaff, because his magic staff is made of glass. His chambers are in the western end of the stronghold. Also, I think he takes orders from a mysterious figure called the Black Spider. I hear this Black Spider hired us to frighten off adventurers like you and intimidate the locals for some reason.
Mirna: I know where a valuable family heirloom is hidden.
Valefor looks up at the tiefling unbinding him "I assure you, you will not regret it and thank you!". Listening to the human behind the tiefling Penumbra "If it is the destruction of this Redbrand organization your after I would be honored to join you in that pursuit a little pay back would be nice.". "My name is Valefor it is a pleasure to make your acquaintances and as to how I got here I made my way here hunting a one of a series of tomes on magical protection spells that a wizard around these parts was in possession of, but unfortunately it turns out that he is a crafty bastard and in charge a these scum.....i should of known better then to blindly trust this Glasstaff but in my pursuit for knowledge I am afraid i was blind. I am still not sure what his plans for me were, but luckily you all have come along."
Bankur ties the remaining redbrand thug's hands and legs together and drags him into one of the vacated cells. Leaning down over the man, Bankur puts his face close to the thug's and in a soft growl says "Your boss' reign is at its end, and your employment is as well. I'm going to lock you in this cell now, but we will return for you once the deed is done. Stay quiet and all will end well for you. Make any noise or otherwise try to thwart our operation and I'll give you to Salty Joe to do as he pleases. Trust me when I say you want to stay quiet."
Intimidation: 12
Bankur then stuffs a gag into the man's mouth and leaves the cell, shutting the cell door behind him. "Friend Penumbra, will you lock this cell door behind me please?"
Bankur looks at the newcomer, nodding slowly. "Your story has credibility friend. Let me assure you though, if your intentions towards us are anything less than honest, you'll be treated such as the redbrand here. If you are who you say you are, then by all means join us in ridding this town of the evil that has infested it."
Speaking quietly to the group, Bankur says "How should we go about dealing with Mirna and her children, friends? We still need to complete our business here, but I'm not sure leaving them alone while we do so is the best idea, while taking them with us while we fight surely wouldn't be either..."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Responding quietly to Bankur, "I feel honor bound to escort this family back the way came, through the tunnel. Quilline's farm is right there, and I am sure they would take this family in until we can ensure it safe for them to return to their home. That should not take to long. If the guards smile upon us, we could be out and back before anyone notices."
Rand moves to the Redbrand and puts on the most fierce face he can muster. He slowly pulls his magical sword from its scabbard, letting the obvious light effect show that there is extra power there. He pulls the gag from the Redbrands mouth and speaks, "Tell me true, for if I detect a lie, I will end you right here and now. How long until someone comes down here, whether it be on patrol, or to relieve you, or to give the prisoners food?" (Intimidation: 18)
