The gnome hums a soft tune and chants in the background as everyone converses with the children, carefully watching them. His eyes glow faintly for a moment as the chanting concludes. So far everyone they've met is lost, dead, or scared — this doesn't bode well.
He tries to assess their motivations (22) and whether they're genuine, or if something more sinister belies them, and then he inspects them and the house carefully to see if there's anything strange about them. Torvus nods at Kai as she asks her questions, adopting her concerned expression. "What kind of monster is it?"
In the meantime, Nightgleam swoops around the house, peeking in the windows as he flies past to determine if he sees or hears(17) anything of note.
(Torvus ritually casts detect magic, which takes 10 minutes.)
Kai will kneel a little to be at eye level with the girl. "What kind of monster? How did it get in there? Is there anyone else in the house?" She will pull two smoother stones out of her pouch and cast light on them, offering them to the kids friendly, trying to gain some trust with them. She will quietly consider who will stay outside with the kids while the others fight the beast, just in case these kids are not being fully honest). Seeing the kids out in the street like this brings back bad memories for Kai but she brushes the thoughts away.
(I'll use my insight roll from earlier throughout this conversation. Kai is trying to make sure they are are being honest and not hiding anything.)
(Kai has turned into a police officer XD)
The youngest kid will turn up to the other one looking for approval before grabbing the stone presented by Kai, the older one pull him close and says : "That's pretty but my mom told me that I shouldn't accept gifts from strangers"- with a vert deep tone of voice, still the one of a girl of her age but filled with sadness
"We don't haven't seen the monster, but we can hear its terrible howls every night from our room."- She pauses and then continues - "We haven't seen our parents or anyone else in there..."
Then the youngest boy immediately says "There's a baby Rose, I told you that I heard a baby!" says with the impulse of a kid that suddenly feels smarter than the rest due to something that he knows but everyone else ignores.
"Oh yes, he thinks there's a baby too"- Says Rose.
Kai nods and smiles at the two. "You're a smart girl. Although it is just a simple rock that will glow for an hour. Just so you two wont be out here in the dark for at least a little while. I could make that glow if you'd prefer. Then it would be something of yours." Kai points to the little boys stuffed animal with a smile. Kai then thinks for a moment before looking back to the children. "What are your names? Did your parents leave you at the house alone? How long have they been gone? Why have you been standing out in the street?"
Kai will give the kids a moment to answer before looking back to the house. "You said the monster is inside? How did it get in there and how did you get out? How long has it been inside? And what of these baby cries?" The last question is directed to the little boy specifically as Kai tries to relate to his childish nature. All the while, Kai will look around the house for any tracks that do not belong to these two children.

Nightgleam flies to the house and inspects through the windows of each floor. When he returns it communicates to Torvu that there he couldn't see a monster in any of the rooms from the house.
After the owl's return, Torvu would've finished his ritual and detected an aura of the school of illusion emanating from both kids.

"I'm sorry we have so many questions," Kayla begins, kneeling so she is at a height with a children. "We want to help and anything you can tell us will make that easier."

"Thank you but we will not have you touching our things either...I'm sorry" - (As Rose stops his brother from giving Kai his doll) - "We are Rosvalda and Thornboldt, and we are not sure if our parents left the house, we are usually in our room when they receive their visits, that happened tonight as well but the room wasn't locked and we were able to escape from those terrible noises...we were waiting for someone to help us get ride of the monster"

Torvus exchanges some glances with the party members, wondering if anyone else shares this skepticism, but not wanting to say it too openly in front of the (apparent) children.
He steps a little closer. Being a gnome, he doesn't need to kneel as Kai does to reach their height; Rosvalda is probably even a little taller than him! "Rosvalda and Thornboldt, I am so sorry about your ordeal. I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you both. If we go into the house to help you with this monster, would you plan to wait out here? Is that safe?"
As they respond, Torvus scrutinizes their magical auras closely(11), wondering exactly why these two children are cloaked in illusion. "You know, my owl is one of my best friends. Would you like to meet him? He can keep you both safe out here."
(OOC: Torvus tries to assess whether they themselves are illusory or if they are real creatures but disguised as children with illusion.)

You notices little imperfections from their body as if they would shift momentarily, that is known to be without a doubt consequence of an illusory projection. In other words, you can see that they are not solid.
"We can wait outside, and I'm sure Thorn would like to see your owl" - Says "Rose" with the usual lack of emotion, but it seemed that she meant those words.
Kai tilts her head slightly, studying the children for a moment before nodding. "How about you wait here while my group and I discuss how to handle this creature?" She will then gather anyone who had also approached the children and pull them into a group huddle out of ears reach of the children.
Once out of hearing range, she will speak slightly. "I don't want to deny helping these children, but does it not seem convenient that they were outside when we arrived? That they've lasted outside this long if a creature is 'in' the house?"

"They also seem.... well spoken for children," Kayla admits. "Then again, perhaps that is all the more reason to investigate what is going on. Could someone be using them, forcing them perhaps, to act as bait?"
Kai nods in thought before looking around the group. "Does anyone have the means to make sure they are telling us all of the truth? I understand the struggles of younger children, but I don't want us to walk into a trap. This all seems very convenient to our arrival here."

"I think that if there is a chance to rid this monster from this family's home, we should move to that purpose." Benito, uses divine sense when they are within 60ft of the house.
Taking the opportunity as his surface kin Torvus approaches the children, Bukowyr asks in his low pitch but surprisingly firm voice tune - "Parchment and writing stick." - with hand extended forward to his companion.
"We can wait outside, and I'm sure Thorn would like to see your owl" - Says "Rose" with the usual lack of emotion, but it seemed that she meant those words.
Torvus nods. "I'll confer with my companions for a moment, but in the meantime please avail yourself of Nightgleam's company."
Nightgleam swoops down from the sky, landing at Thorn's feet with three hoots and a graceful bow, his golden and silver wings wide and extended. He nuzzles Thorn's leg and leans into it. Torvus watches their reactions carefully as he joins his companions.
"Something is absolutely amiss here. Those children aren't children at all. They are projections — illusions created by a magical effect."
That doesn't mean what they're saying is untrue or that they're lying to us. Maybe there really is a monster, or maybe the being creating the illusions is reaching out to us in the form of children because it thinks we would understand its plight better that way. But shouldn't we get the local authorities, if there is such a thing in this place?"
He thinks to himself for a moment. "On the other hand, understanding this kind of magic will probably be useful in the future for my research." He grapples visibly with the question.
"In the Underdark, deceiving the prey's senses is a usual tactic by many of the beasts. Allow me to try and force a revelation of what you have discovered. Hand me what I asked, please. " Bukowyr forces a smile on the manner as he saw Kai doing earlier. Obviously unfitting to his taciturn nature, he believes doing so will bring a better response as it has done to the water genasi.
Torvus acquiesces with a short bow and hands Bukowyr a sheaf of parchment and a quill with a pained expression. "Please be careful with that! It's my only quill!"
(OOC: Sorry, wasn't ignoring you, I just cross-posted on top and didn't see your earlier question!)
Clasping both his hands over Torvus' hands as he receives the items, Bukowyr widens his smile believing it to be an exact mimicry of the sympathy dispensed by Kai.
"Being cunning is our key to survive. I will take good care of your tools, brother." With that, Bukowyr approaches the children, addressing the talk girl - "Hello, Rosvalda. I am Bukowyr. Now, take these items and draw your home's interior as you know it. " Upon saying these words, the Svirfneblin moves to put the items directly into the girl's hands, touching her.
The news that the children are in fact illusions surprises Kayla. She hadn't even considered the possibility. Clearly she had plenty to learn from this group. Squinting at the 'children' she tried to see what the gnome had but somehow she didn't have the knack for it. It was like a name on the cusp of her tongue that refused to come. Her power could perhaps provide answers... but not now. To make matters more frustrating, the whispers stubbornly refused to part with anything useful on when or how or... anything other than guts, glory and the inadvertent spatter of bodily liquids.
Heading to bed, everyone. Roll for me if you need :)
Rose looks at Torvus in the eye and even though she is a bit reluctant to take quill, she'll attempt to do it, however, her hand will go right through it and at that moment you'll get an authentic reaction of fear and surprise from Rose, gasping and taking her hand to her mouth she'll collapse and cry - What is happening Rose? did he do something to you?- will say Thorn as he gets to Rose's level and try to comfort her, surprisingly they can touch each other and Thorn will turn to Torvus and say: "evil man! why did you do that?" - While Rose continue rocking herself forward and backward saying to herself "No...no...no, this can't be truth, this can't be truth" - then Thorn frustrated by the lack of response and the state of her sister will start crying next to her.
Benito's divine sense perceive's nothing from the kids it does from the house. He gets the feeling of undead creeping from the house.
