"Thank you," says Velma and then she wishes Granny Naomi goodnight and gives Guilliame a kiss on the cheek before she heads up the street to her house, which she reaches without incident.

"She seems a nice enough girl," says Granny as the two of them turn to head back home. "Are you going to ask her to marry you?"

"I think I might but I'll have to be able to look after her and her mother I think. She is not well."

Granny thinks for a moment before saying, "But do you love her? That is the most important thing. Everything else just needs a little thought and planning... For example, we would need a bigger house; you need to look after me as well."

"I think I love her but it's all been so quick. As you say we'll have to work through other things. Anyway we should get back. Keep an eye out - it's more dangerous in this part of town."

The walk back to the house is uneventful and while Guilliame keeps and eye out for any possible danger Granny chats with him about future possibilities. Once home, Granny says goodnight and heads off to bed leaving Guilliame to do a last minute check of the property. 

[OOC: Please let me know what, if anything, you want Guilliame to do before he goes to bed. Also, though Guilliame may Prepare the Sleep spell after his next long rest, he still needs to procure one of the possible spell components for the spell; he won't be able to cast the spell until he has the components.]

Before heading off to bed himself, Guilliame checks out the house and then does the Alarm ritual on the front and back entrances. The fourth candle of the night is being called as he finally gets into bed himself...

Guilliame is awoken early next morning by Granny with a mug of char. He probably could have done with a little bit more sleep, but he is now fully rested.

"What are your plans for the day, Guilliame?" asks Granny sitting herself down on the edge of his bed.

"I have a few things I'd like to do today. I need to get some spell components for my sleep spell. I will pop across to have lunch with Velma if I have time. This evening I'll be at the guard station. Is there anything needs doing here?"

"No, nothing important," says Granny. "But if you see Samuel when you are at the School, ask him to come to the shop as I have a few little chores for him."

Granny then gets up and says, "I've got some porridge warming up on the stove, so up and at them, it is time for breakfast."

Guilliame is then left alone to prepare himself for the day.

[OOC: Any thoughts regarding sourcing the spell components for Sleep? I am happy for Guilliame to make a straight Wisdom check against a DC of 12, if you want.

Also, he doesn't need to have components to Prepare the spell, but he will need some to cast it.]

OOC Regarding the components is there a beach with sand that would seem appropriate close by that Guilliame is aware of? Are roses flowering now (the sand would be better rather than relying on roses but there is a tiny chance that there will be a rose bush in a handy location. Are crickets sold to eat or for other reasons at a market somewhere.

[OOC: Guilliame doesn't think that roses would still be in bloom this late in the summer and crickets are not normal fare in Engle, but there are certainly beaches nearby where he could go and collect some sand. However, from what he has read, normal sand would likely be too coarse and he would have to grind it finer using a mortar and pestle.]

Still in his bedclothes, Guilliame pads out into the shop and over to where the sale items from Fini's shop have been put on display (see here). In the collection are three small metal containers which he believes contain the 'sand' used by scribes. Perhaps it might also be used for the casting of the Sleep spell.

OOC Sometimes builders need fine sand for sweeping between pavers or putting into cement. Probably not Engleian builders though.

Guilliame prises open one of the small boxes with this thumbnail and find it contains a small, sealed cloth bag, which, when he squeezes it, puffs out a cloud of fine powder that slowly drifts to the floor. Rubbing the powder between his fingers, it feels slippery and not gritty as he would expect from beach sand and, when he put his fingers to his nose, he smells something that seems more organic than mineral. 

At first he is disappointed, but then he remembers that the books he read did not actually specify 'beach sand', and this substance is called 'sand' by the scribes. Perhaps it might be what they meant... The books were written by scholars after all... Or maybe this 'sand' would work anyway; there were a number of different components that could be used for this spell so perhaps the requirement wasn't a hard and fast one.

[OOC: Since we created this character, I have changed the rules for innate sorcery (but I forgot to push them through to your character). Guilliame is a latent sorcerer, which means he is effectively an innate sorcerer while he is wearing the iron armband that Wamzut gave him. Guilliame's studies so far—both in general and specifically for the Sleep spell—have taught him that the spell components required for spells are not hard and fast as a rule, especially for lower level spells. Which means that the contents of the small bag in his hand might actually work, but he won't know until he tries casting the spell using a pinch of this sand as the spell component.

OOC Does Guilliame suspect that the sleep spell might be dangerous if wrongly learnt - would rather not kill the local cat or turn it into a fireball or somesuch.

[OOC: Guilliame would be well aware that there are other magi in Constantine know and can cast the Sleep spell without endangering people's lives, however, because he learnt the spell through researching secondary sources (rather than being taught by someone who knows the spell, or learning it by rote from a magical scroll), he can't be absolutely sure that the spell will work as he thinks it should.]

OOC Is there a well infested with rats round or a good source of live rats other than that?

[OOC: This area of the Ward is pretty well maintained, and so generally doesn't have a rat problem. However, to the north—where there are more warehouses—rats are more common.

More common in this area are the rats of the local skies: sea gulls, sparrows, and even pigeons are quite common in Constantine.]
