Start with the book.Check for any clasps or anything holding the book closed. Check the binding for writing and strength - does it look like it will fall apart. If all good open up and have a read.
The book is relatively new, but has definitely been used and is even a little bit dirty on the cover. There is a simple clasp holding the book closed and there is no writing on the cover to identify what the contents might be.
Finding a place where the light is good, Guilliame opens the book to the title page where he reads the following in the cuneiform letters of Sorendenese: This spellbooke belongs to the Magus Armand Guss.
Realising what he has in his hands, Guilliame quickly flicks through the pages only to find that the writing, while having characters similar to Sorendenese is unreadable by him.

See the Arcane reveals no magic concentrated in the book and Guilliame comes to the decision that Armand Guss developed his own written language using characters like those of the Sorendenese language to record his spells. This is strange, but not unknown to Guilliame, though perhaps a little unnecessary because there don't appear to be that many spells in the book (i.e., 9) and the individual spells don't take up that many pages.

Have a look at the polished wooden baton about 30 cms long with a tight leather cap pushed over one end. See if the leather cap looks like it's supposed to be removed. If so then take it off and try another See the arcane.
Putting the book to one side, Guilliame picks up the wooden baton and examines it. The cap just seems to be pushed into place with no pins to secure it, so Guilliame tries pulling it off.
As he does so, the end of the baton that was under the cap immediately bursts into flames almost causing Guilliame to drop it.
However, he gets over his surprise quickly as he realises that the flame is not hot.
He has seen this spell before, although it produces no heat, this Continual Flame will last until it is dispelled.

Have a look at the small silver tube. Tap it to see whether it appears hollow or solid. See if there are any joins. If hollow gently shake and listen and feel if there is anything inside the tube. See whether it twists or has a cap that unscrews and pulls apart.
The small silver tube does appear to be hollow and has an apparent join about a third of the way along the barrel.
When Guilliame shakes it, he detects no sound or movement from within the tube, but the two ends do twist in different directions after a small initial resistance.
He is left with the opinion that the smaller end of the tube fits tightly into the larger end.

Over a table (so if anything comes out it falls on the table) try to twist and pull the smaller end. If there is movement then try to pull the small end partially out. If it does come out then look carefully at the newly exposed region. Do a See the arcane.
Guilliame carefully twists the smaller end of the tube and then carefully pulls it partway off. He sees streaks of a dark red substance caught in some small parallel grooves running along the part of the tube that has been revealed. The substance has been loosened by his actions and a few tiny fragments fall onto the table.

Close the tube up. Have a look and a sniff at the red substance and try to identify it. Sweep it onto a piece of paper and fold it up and store it away. Put the tube to one side.
Pick up the mirror. Look on front and back for inscriptions and any markings. Look at the reflection and make sure it matches what it should including checking own reflection.
[OOC: Forgot to tell you that about the use of Guilliame's See the Arcane. The silver of the tube masks the results because of its natural affinity for magic, but the fragments of the red substance that Guilliame collects do seem to glow more magically than expected.]
The red substance reminds Guilliame of the iron smell of dried blood when he sniffs it, but he can't be sure because there isn't a lot of it.
Putting away the tube, Guilliame picks up the mirror. It seems to be made of solid metal, but Guilliame doubts that is made of solid silver. It is more likely to be some base metal covered with a layer of silver. Looking closely, he sees some places where the silver has flaked off and the colour of copper metal showing up from underneath. However, apart from the name Armand Guss scratched into the back of the mirror, there are no more inscriptions or markings on the mirror.
When Guilliame checks his reflection in the mirror, it seems to behave just like any other mirror, and his See the Arcane shows no extra magic than would be expected for the silver involved in the mirror.

Look at the ends of lump of wax. Does it look like it may have been stamped in something (that's not how a seal works he suddenly thinks). Does it look like one or both ends have been melted. Is there anything unusual about the wax.

Guilliame can see no marks on either of the two semi-precious gemstone. With his See the Arcane still in operation (i.e., it lasts for a minute) he can tell that both stones are slightly magical and that the piece of crystal is more magical than the piece of obsidian (which is not crystalline, it is more like a piece of black glass).

OOC Does the name Armand Guss suggest a possible origin?
