"I'll have to concede with you, Erhorn; I say we bring the girl back to her father and ensure it's a pleasant reunion, then revisit this mind-bending conundrum at our leisure."
Walton responded as he straightened his wide-brimmed, shade-providing straw hat, which had been knocked crooked during the battle. He stepped away over to the exit, expectantly awaiting the others to follow his lead.
(After taking some time to consider the statue and ultimately running out of ideas, the party agrees to leave this place. You trek briskly, already somewhat familiar with the woods and no longer having to worry about tracking. It is late in the evening, around 8 or 9pm when the party arrives back at the north edge of town near Rickard's property.)
"Bess! My sweet girl!"
(Rickard runs and meets you all outside of his gate just as you clear the woods. He has obviously been waiting near there, hoping to see you all return.
"Papa!" Bess cries, as they run and embrace each other, both shedding tears of joy. The sight of the big, burly Blacksmith crying over having his little girl back brings joy to all of your hearts. After letting them have their moment, Rickard thanks all of you, shakes all of your hands, and bids you all to allow him to take you back to the Tavern so that you may rest.
"They did it! They saved my girl!" Rickard shouts as they enter the busy Tavern. The townspeople are all excited, cheering, clapping you all on the back, congratulating you all and Rickard for getting his daughter back. Willfred shakes all of your hands and offers you all whatever you wish to drink or eat, on the house. Jack the Serving Boy hugs Bess and holds back tears as well. The entire tavern proclaim you heroes and surround you, eager to hear your tales of heroism and how you saved Bess. And, yes, you do get paid. $$$ :)
DMs note: Guys, it was a pleasure, I hope you enjoyed. Thanks for playing!
Walton had a great time of the entire celebration, regaling tavern-goers with only mildly exaggerated tales of the party's bravery, including a very detailed description of how he struck down a goblin with a single blow; he even gave his warlock "friend" some credit, despite despising everything he stood for.
After all was said and done, Walton Gibson continued acting as a community priest, though he always set aside time to study the history of the land; he even tried to write a book about the history of the Delian Order and its founder, though that would require far more research to properly finish.
Last, but certainly not least, he kept on trying to crack the state's riddle, in hopes that maybe it contained the secrets of the order that he so desired.
Player's note: it was a great time, in my opinion! All the characters were great, though I really can't speak for myself. Just you all wait until Walton publishes his book.
Xanlanann happily accepts his reward and heads to the next town seeking more fortune. Eventually, he was found in the woods, throat slit for stealing from the wrong person..
((Thanks for running the game. First play by post, was definitely a unique experience!!))
Frederick more than happily accepts his coin as reward for a good deed, and even more eagerly accepts the hospitality on offer, eating and especially drinking like a king, long into the night and early hours of the morning that followed. The hangover was not pretty, but it was worth a good time. Frederick moves on from this town as well, intent on finding his fortune and making his name. If he can ever stop squandering what fortunes he does accrue on his love of drink, he might just get somewhere towards that goal. Still, at least he'll have an amazing tale of heroism to tell his drinking buddies now.
((It was a blast, gang. Thanks for the top notch job DMing, and the rest of you were fun to interact with.))
Thanks again for playing, guys. Sorry for the periodic bumps in the road. Also, don't normally offer this, but I thought I'd let you know what was up with the riddle if you want to know. If you don't, that's more traditional.
Do you want to know?
Are you sure?
OK...
(Fredrick and Walton are drawn to the carvings on the wall.
As you inspect the North Wall, you see that the carvings are pretty large and seem to depict several different scenes that show what appears to be an order of knights in several battles. In one of them, the knights are shown defeating what appears to be an army of Goblins, led by a particularly vicious looking, larger Goblin. The next carving shows the knights standing victorious over a field of dead Goblin bodies. As you see one of the other depictions, they show a huge Dragon terrorizing a village, burning homes and killing innocent villagers with vicious fire. The next mural shows the knights slaying the Dragon. The knights are all shown with matching insignia on their armor and shields.
As you go further along the northern wall, following and inspecting the murals, you see a large carving of a very regal-looking knight. His armor looks more intricate than the rest, making you all think he might have been the leader or founder. Underneath, the name 'Sextus Varius' is inscribed. Next to him, there is a further inscription that reads as follows:
"I pledge to serve law, protect the innocent, battle the agents of chaos, and never reveal the secrets of the Delian Order. My word is my bond, my life and honor is for the order, for this night and all nights to come."
This seems to be the extent of what is on the northern wall.)
"If you are to keep this, you must first give it to me."
Just to set to rest any final 'I wonder what happened with him' things about the Warlock...
Erhorn was very dissatisfied with the result of the adventure, even though the gold would probably come in handy. He set off on a journey, casting spells, talking to animals and sniping people over cliffs from two blocks away, for other adventuring groups, only to find that they were just as intent on murdering potential minions as his first adventuring group. Somewhat angered by this casual disregard, he made eventual friends with a kobold nest.
'Friends' was maybe stretching it a bit, at first.
Nevertheless, he persuaded (paid) them to set up a series of secret rooms and passages in and around the old Delian Tomb he'd discovered with the others and set to building up a series of like-minded people through trickery and deceit and randomly telling people the True Name of his Patron. About two-hundred years after his first adventure, he set to on an attempt to spread madness (or possibly just the Good News about his Patron, it was hard to tell the difference) throughout the lands.

His Patron didn't care, or even notice.
