"I like your initiatve Es, but a deal's a deal. We came, we saw, we found a flag and now, we head back home," Barmo says hoping to stop up the stealthy halfling. He begins to roll/bunch up the canvas find to carry easier.
Barmo looks to Ed with mischief in his eyes and a smile playing on his round face, "Does that mean Esmee can look closer and we can get to the bottom of this mystery? Just think, we could be the heroes of Hickorydale, I of course would be at the forefront." Barmo smiles even wider as he says this last part, prodding on the others in jest.
"Oh let's just do it!" Eikis declares. "I'm tired, I'm getting cold, and I'm definitely hungry, but you know what? Not knowing the answer to this is going to gnaw at me more than my empty stomach! And if it is gigantic rats, then we probably want to nip that in the bud before they follow us back to the village and infiltrate our pantries! Mice is one thing, but rats? Whole 'nother level!!!"
(Just a heads up that I will progress based on majority. I know the E's are in for continuing up river. Ed will go with a group decision. Barmo, you're thoughts?)
"Eikis, can you make a raft to carry our gear? Otherwise we risk ruining it if we try to swim and it gets too deep." Esmee looks thoughtful for a second, "Or I guess we could just leave our packs, but we don't know what we're going to run into I'd rather have them."
Barmo nods along as they women make plans, eyeing the river and the thought he may have to actually go in. Things have gotten real, but while hesitant he is quite with the group on investigating.
If 10 minutes have passed since he cast produce flame Ed will recast and move along the bank closer to whatever is in the water. How far from the bank into the water is the bolder thing?
At this point everyone has gathered by where there flag has been pulled up and Barmo has stowed it away. It took a good 8 minutes to get the rope and flag out of the water and stowed so you Ed, you can produce flame, and everyone starts moving further upriver. What Eikis has now assumed is a ship lies in wait about 200' away. You know the river gets wider the closer you get to the falls and averages about 40' across where you are. The ship looked closer to the bank you are on but now that night has fallen it's out of your sight range. Although the night is clear, and the stars are starting to come out you know a waxing quarter moon will not be visible for another hour.
Esmee, if you do want to scout ahead I'll need another stealth roll now that everyone is on the move again.
Unfortunately the commotion of pulling the flag out of the river seems to have thrown off Esmee's mojo and she is not nearly as stealthy as she was. With Esmee being less stealthy than she'd like she leads the party up-river towards the ship. Fortunately the way is safe until you get into darkvision range of the ship. The closer you get the more everyone can hear the squeaking sounds (if it can be called that) and they are soon joined by thumping and scratching sounds coming from the ship. As you close past 60' you can see that the ship is, surprisingly, mostly intact and pointed almost directly down river. It has suffered some damage from going over the falls and it's clear to see that it had been on fire. You can see that one of the masts has fallen to the shore and there is clear evidence of animal tracks around the mast on the shore. From this distance you're unable to identify them all clearly.
"Oh... that would take some time," Eikis tells Esmee. "We could use that board that washed up as a base, and I could lash together some oars... well, and I'd need that rope, too... it could work if I used my crossbow to shoot across the other side of the river, as long as I built an anchor, hmm, hmm...."
As she begins mumbling and planning, you get the idea that Eikis is getting lost in her own world there. She does stop long enough to tell you her plan, once she's formed it:
"This'll be hard in the dark, to be honest. But anyway... a boat is a bad idea. We'd just be potentially swept down the rapids in the dark, if we tried to pilot it ourselves. Unless one of you has actually done that before, have you?" She looks around to see if there's any disagreement.
"What we can do is use this length of rope as a sort of anchor to pull ourselves out to the ship in the middle of the river. I'd have to rig up a pulley of some sort to attach the big plank of wood to the rope, and we'd have to get the rope on the other side of the bank somehow by shooting it there with one of our bows... but then it'd basically just be a matter of elbow grease to pull the raft up to the ship to see what's up on the other side, rather than rowing and steering and sailing. Also, I'd definitely need Ed's help to move a piece of wood that big. And... you know, if we're gonna do it, I'd like to take a few minutes to cast a ritual, just to make sure we're not dealing with any weird magics, either," she adds.
Eikis looks around at her available supplies. "You know... doing that would probably take me the better part of an hour, at the least. If you want, I can get started while someone runs back to the village to tell the Elders. We're gonna be here a while, at least, if you want me to craft something sturdy and stable enough to get us over there," she announces.
Ha, crud. posting at the same time. Sorry, jumped the gun a bit. Wish I had waited so you guys could have built a raft to find it's not needed, but I'll leave the post.
"Um, Eikis, we shouldn't need a raft," Barmo states in that annoying obvious tone. "That mast is mighty large and should be easy to get to. Shimmy across that and we should be sound as a pound." The big halfling moves toward the mast to inspect the area closer. "It should be like when we were back in school, remember we used to jump across those felled trees and say the ground was broccoli and if you landed on it you had to eat it?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Esmee exhales softly and casts her gaze downwards at Eikis's words. Of course the other halfling would think of all the right things and Esmee wouldn't.
"I get it, probably best then we stick to the shore and make our way closer that way."
She ranges a bit ahead of the rest as they all make their way down the shore closer and closer to the ship. Once they've gotten within sixty feet, Esmee stares in awe at the wreckage. She tries to imagine the horror of being on something that size so completely out of control as it went over the falls and the extra chaos of being on fire. Those poor crew members.
The louder the squeaking gets, the more the scratching and thumping comes across to the river bank, the more trepidation Esmee feels. Now she asks herself, what happened to this ship?
Esmee presses on, going closer to the mast in an attempt to make out the tracks.

OOC-seems Barmo & I posted at the same time!
Seeing the recent events unfold, Ed will say: "Ok, Ok, my theory about a drunkin tall folk seems to have been wrong, What do we do now?"
Barmo looks to Ed with mischief in his eyes and a smile playing on his round face, "Does that mean Esmee can look closer and we can get to the bottom of this mystery? Ed smiles at Barmo saying: "I will support whatever decision our friends make."

Esmee nods at Eikis. "We can't let whatever danger might be there harm the Dale."
(Can they tell or do they know how deep the river is where the structure is at?)
Give me a luck check Esmee. Just a straight 1d20

Yeah, you're not so sure. Deep is a relative term, especially for a halfling :)
