Midian looks first at the evidence he recognises as belonging to his master and notes the following:
As usual, Harlan was only wearing his Seeker uniform as he normally protected himself magically (i.e., Mage Armour), but that means he was acting as a Seeker and not as a private individual.
The knife blow to the front of his tunic is the only sign of damage from a mundane source on the body. Considering its position, it is unlikely he was taken by surprise and Midian finds it difficult to understand how a knife wielder could have gotten in past Harlan's guard.
Following up on the above, Midian examines Harlan's long sword and sees that there are traces of recent blood on the blade. This makes Midian think that Harlan actually came to blows with his attacker.
However, the blood looks slightly different than what he is used to seeing.
There is enough correspondence between the shape of the scorch mark on the front of the tunic and Seeker Harlan's destroyed protective medallion that Midian is convinced the man was wearing it at the time it was destroyed. However, there is some evidence that the scorching occurred after the knife blow.
The scorch marks around the collar of Harlan's tunic were most likely caused by a second attack, but without seeing the body's head Midian cannot deduce any more than that.
Moving onto the rest of the evidence, Midian learns the following:
Spreading out the belongings, he immediately notices something unusual: a small, clear-glass container with what looks to be some sort of metallic mechanism in it. When he tries to open it, it starts to emit a bright light. He has heard of these, but this is the first one he has seen. It is called a light jar and is quite expensive.
Midian finds a hairbrush with long blonde hair caught in the teeth. This is an unusual hair colour to him: Sorians mainly have black hair and the native Stemian's predominant hair colour is brown.
The woman's clothing present represents the clothing of at least two people because of the difference in sizes. The shorter woman's clothing all match those of an elderly maid servant, but surprisingly, there is only one set of these clothes.
Midian finds evidence that at least one of the women may have been having their period.
Although there are a number of cosmetic items in the belongings, there is no jewellery; apart from the silver necklace of moon phase medallions Priestess Aloma is so concerned about.
[A very good roll. Is there anything else that Midian would have been looking for specifically.]

Midian takes his time and mentally catalogs all of his findings. This sort of post mortem analysis had never much interested Midian, it was understanding the patterns and mannerisms of the living that entertained his mind. In this instance he sees the appeal that investigators of the order and elsewhere must find. The objects seem to speak to him. They carry details that tell a story.
He does not share all of his findings with the priestess Aloma, both because to do so might impugn her own skills, that he found things and drew conclusions she didn’t with additional time to examine the objects, and also because he sees no value in doing so. He does consult her about one item, however.
“The blood, Aloma,” Midian interrupts her if it seems prudent to do so. “The blood on Harlan’s longsword. It looks like he must have wounded one of the attackers. But the blood doesn’t seem right. Something is off.”
Midian is a focused student of all things arcane, but has little skill with the art himself. Aloma also seems more trained as a naturalist and herbalist, and might have more insight into the odd properties of altered or inhuman blood.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
[OOC: Aloma's roll for her magic spell:14]
Midian waits until he sees Priestess Aloma sit back from her studying of the knife; she has a confused look on her face.
“The blood, Aloma,” Midian says, interrupting her thoughts. “The blood on Harlan’s longsword. It looks like he must have wounded one of the attackers. But the blood doesn’t seem right. Something is off.”
[OOC: This insight will give her Advantage for the previous roll:17]
"Ahhh..." says Aloma suddenly looking more certain about something. "That explains a lot."
She gets to her feet and comes over to where Midian is holding Seeker Harlan's sword. She passes him the knife and takes the sword off him to examine the remnants of blood on the blade.
[OOC: Another Aloma roll:20]
"Yes," she says after a moment, nodding her head. "That knife belonged to a woman, but not an ordinary human woman... I believe she is some sort of half breed... Half human, half... alfaran! Yes, that makes some sort of sense. I believe they said that the woman Sarina was from Gont.
Midian has heard of the alfaren of Gont before but has never met one because they are few in numbers and rarely travel. According to the stories he has heard, they are a magical race that supposedly live for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. He has never heard of humans and alfarens being able to interbreed before. [OOC: These are the elves of Magudonya.]

“A fascinating riddle, all of this,” Midian says. “An Alfaren halfbreed, emblems of the priestess order, a dubious display of injuries both mundane and magical, and contraceptive herbs that could have been used to feign old age. There’s clearly something more going on here. I am going to begin by looking into this Sarina woman, if she hasn’t fled the city already. It seems as good a place to start as any.”
Seeing as how his mentor employed mage armor rather than conventional armor, and a longsword, a weapon Midian finds personally cumbersome and inelegant, and the amulet against force attacks is destroyed, he sees nothing in Harlan’s gear that would be of tactical use to him, being the possible advantage of the knowledge it has provided.
He will excuse himself with a half bow, and leave the church grounds, heading out to the city to ask around about the current whereabouts of Sarina, starting at the inn where she had been staying, where Harlan was found dead.
Midian excuses himself from the antechamber and, after collecting his signed and sealed letter of authority from Brother Jax (I have added this item to the character sheet), put his empty backpack on and heads toward the main doors of the temple.
As he passes through the Temple he is slowed in his progress as a few people ask after his wellbeing and commiserate with him on the Death of Seeker Harlan, but eventually he exits the building to find himself in the main square of the Temple Ward.
Despite all that has happened, it is still early morning and his belly is telling him he has yet to have breakfast.
Not wanting to go back inside, he ignores his stomach and heads north heading out of the Temple Ward through some of the richer residential areas of the city towards the Scholar's Ward that lies across one of the many tributaries of the Lyr River on which the city is built.
As he walks, people he meets in the streets give him a wide berth and the occasional town guard he meets gives his rapier a meaningful look but pass no comment assuming he is on official business.
When Midian reaches the bridge that leads across to the Scholar's Ward he sees a traveller carrying a backpack similar to his own being questioned by the guards about a longbow he is carrying. The man is only allowed to continue on once his bow is unstrung. It would seem that the town guard is being particularly vigilante at the moment.
Eventually, Midian reaches the Scholar's Ward, an area of the town he is not overly familiar with. Now he has to find the somewhat unimaginatively titled 'Scholar's Retreat' tavern.
[OOC: Make an Investigation check to find the tavern. Also, see the World Anvil site for a mud map of the city layout. It is on the home page. Let me know if you can't see it.]

Assuming that the Scholar's Retreat must be somewhere close to the School of Occult Studies, Midian heads towards it and then starts asking people after the tavern he is looking for. He is quickly given directions to the tavern where he is met with a barred door. It would seem that it is still too early in the morning for this establishment to be open.

Midian will take the time to look for a nearby cafe that might be open for breakfast, to assuage his hunger but remain in the vicinity to return to the tavern shortly.
This part of town seems pretty sleepy compared to the Mercantile District or the Temple Ward, which both start their day with sunrise, albeit for very different reasons. Being less than two candles (i.e., 2 hours, see world site for the article on 'Standard candles') since sunrise, it would seem most businesses in this Ward have yet to open their doors and the people in the streets are those needing to travel to different parts of the city for their jobs.
However, as Midian is looking around for somewhere to catch up with breakfast, he hears the sounds of general activity coming from the other side of the barred door.

Hearing the sound from the barred door of the very tavern he was intending to investigate, Midian will move closer, listening for more clarity on the sounds from within - a struggle, and spoken words, etc - while looking for any other entrances into the building. He also has his Thieves Tools available now, should he decide to pick a lock, but he first searches for alternate means of entry, listening all the while.
OOC: I still have yet to figure out rolling from my phone. Midian is listening, which could be a perception check, searching for alternate entryways which could be investigation or a separate perception check, he attempting to remain generally inconspicuous while doing so, or out of sight, depending on what is more prudent - likely deception if engaging in action near the front door or stealth if sneaking around the side or back of the building. Lastly, if he concluded that the front door is the best or only means for entry, or finds an alternate locked door, he may roll a tool check use with thieves tool proficiency.
Let me know which check, or checks, you would like rolled, and I can roll them when I have access to my PC again.
Midian can hear the sounds of a few people moving around inside and speaking with each other in normal tones, but it would seem the main entrance is still barred from the preceding night. He could start looking around the premises for another means of entrance, or perhaps he could just knock.
[OOC: It is early in the morning for a part of town which doesn't do much business at this time of day. One of the advantages/disadvantages of having to wake every morning for the Dawn Ceremony.]

If Midian realizes the sounds are the normal sounds of a business preparing to open, and not the sounds of a skirmish or struggle, he will simply knock.
After about half a minute, Midian's knocking at the door brings results as a man, who appears to be in his thirties, opens the door after removing whatever was keeping it closed.
"Blessed day, young sir," says the man politely after looking Midian up and down, his attention being initially caught by the rapier at Midian's side and then the Donai patch on the breast of his uniform. "How might I and my establishment be of use to you on this fine morning?"
