The fire burns warmly, but casts little light into Mentor's study. The flickering shadows only hint at the vast number of books and scrolls that fill the many shelves. Slowly Mentor walks over to the fire.
"Well my friends, your training is complete. You are not yet true heroes, you have yet to prove yourselves. But first, let me tell you of Zargon..."
"Many centuries ago, Zargon was my apprentice. He worked hard and learned quickly. But impatience devoured him. He wanted to learn more powerful magic. I told him of the dangers, and that he should be patient, for in time he would become a great Sorcerer. But Zargon could not wait; each night he broke into my study and read my spellbooks. The secrets that were held within them were great indeed. Once he learned these secrets, Zargon fled."
"When I caught up to him, I found him greatly changed. He had pledged his allegiance to the Great Powers of Chaos. Fool! He saw magic as only a shortcut to power and paid no heed to the terrible price he would have to pay. I tried to reason with him, but to no avail. He laughed in my face and then unleashed a terrible spell which I was hard-pressed to counter. For many days we battled, but Zargon had allies stronger than even I, and I could not defeat him. In the end, as we both weakened, he fled and sought refuge in the Northern Chaos Wastes. There he licked his wounds and honed his skills, conjuring ancient powers with which to overthrow the Empire."
"I must watch Zargon and measure the strength of his magic. The powers that Zargon has called upon will destroy us all if I relax from this vigil. Zargon's legions threatened us once before. Then it was Rogar that aided me and defeated them. Now they are on the march again; already they have assailed the Borderlands. The Empire must again look for Heroes and to this end I have trained you."
This campaign is heavily influenced by the HeroQuest boardgame; though knowledge about the game is not needed to play. I am looking for a group of 4 to 6 Players to build Level 1 characters that have spent the last several years training together. Mentor, is a powerful wizard of unknown age; who's name has been lost to time, leaving only his title. He is a legendary trainer, having taught generations of Heroes that have resisted the forces of chaos for centuries. You were chosen for your natural talents; which Mentor has groomed to help you grow into the future Heroes that you are today.
Point Buy for Stats, but beyond that I only ask that you share a link to your D&D Beyond Character Sheet to apply. I will have a Session Zero covering how the chosen Characters know, and have grown with, each other; and to cover any questions that you may have about the world and the campaign, before officially starting the campaign. Welcome to your Hero's Quest!
We now have 6 Players, so I am ending the recruitment and am glad to welcome you all to the campaign. I will go over each of your characters; but I am a very open DM so I don't expect to have any issues.
If you like, you all may look over each others characters as well and begin talking about how you feel your characters would interact and feel about each other; and what they know about each other. Take time to learn what kind of group of adventurers you are and any strategies you may have learned to use together. I will help guide the way and ask questions as well; once I have made my way through all the characters; but teamwork and roleplaying is definitely encouraged.
Branra is a muscular tiefling standing 5'9" tall. He has jet black hair, with dark red streaks through it. His brown horns, which curl down under his ears, also contain similar red streaks through them. His eyes are a solid gold color. He normally wears a cloak made from a lion skin, with the skull and teeth still attached to it. His garb is fairly simple beyond that, a leather, knee-length skirt made from an auroch's skin, and a deer hide vest. He wears a necklace composed of shell and animal teeth.
He works hard during the day, but, also likes to enjoy himself at night. He encourages the others to sneak out with him to the local taverns where he has a tendency to overindulge in beer. When they go out, he always wears his lion-skin cloak, and will tell elaborate tales about the fight he had with the lion. In some versions, he tracked the lion for days because it was killing his families livestock before killing it in a long, drawn out battle, on other days he will say that he saw the lion crouched behind a bush watching the children of his tribe at play.
In a quieter moment back in their dormitory, Branra admits that none of those stories are true. His tribe was hunting auroch, when, from a cliff-top, Branra noticed the lion sneaking up on his younger brother Merai. A lucky javelin throw managed to kill the lion, but, Branra admits if he hadn't been throwing downwards he probably wouldn't have killed the lion.
After the first couple weeks of their training, the young barbarian showed himself to be a staunch friend to his fellow trainees. Defending them if any of the townspeople give them any problem and jumping in with fists if necessary on their trips to the local tavern.
He regularly teases Yesjen Julain for their calm demeanor urging them to lighten up and enjoy life.
(ooc) I'll add more details on his interactions with the other characters once people post what their characters are like.
You have spent several years now in the Mentor's Academy on the outskirts of the Empire's Capital. These ancient grounds are rumored to be older that all but the Emperor's Castle itself. More ancient than the remainder of the city and even the lost undercity itself. The borders of the Empire have been pressed against by the growing forces of Chaos; led by the deadly Chaos Warriors, men who have fallen to the dark powers of Chaos Magic. Their armies are swelled by the forces of Orcs, Goblins, Undead, Cruel Magically animated Gargoyles, and the one eyed lizard like Fimir. Zargon is not the only Chaos Warlock in their dark ranks; but he is certainly the strongest.
The Empire itself has always been opening to the many races of the land, as long as their intent was not cruel. The cruel nature of the Orcs, Goblins, and Fimirs are the only reason they have not been allowed within the Empire's vast boundaries. The Empire has grown both strong, wise, and kind under the watchful gaze of Mentor and the protection of the Heroes he trains. But when the forces of Chaos rise and expands; that is when fear, doubt, and cruelty is able to slip its way into even the Empire's Capital itself. The people need a symbol of hope, or else more souls will likely fall to Chaos.
Taraven is 5'6" elf with pale blue skin and blue eyes with gold specks. She always has her black hair pulled back into a braid. She is dressed in dark grey robes with very subtle blue embellishments.
Taraven has always be a rather quiet trainees. She is a rather inquisitive person and is always trying to find the answers to her questions. She feels like knowledge is power. So, any sort of mystery is rather intriguing. She will unintentionally put herself in "harms way" to find an answer or investigate something interesting. She has been in a world of books and researching in the library that she wants go out in the world to learn from experience.
Taraven took a while to open up to her fellow trainees. She opened up to Yesjen first as they had a many classes together. Then, she began to talk to Fallon, Addi, and Julian since they were in some of her classes as well. Since her path did not cross much in class with Branra, she is still very shy around him. But, she trusts the other and if they are friends with him then she will trust him as well.
OOC: I am still learning to be better with roleplaying and backstories.
OOC: All good. I have experience with newer and more seasoned players; having been roleplaying since the 90's. I've even DM'd a convention for the first time last year; with most of the players being completely new to D&D. I was also running several campaigns on the D&D Beyond Forum; until last fall when I had to take time off for medical reasons.
Fallon is a shifter of an average height, around 5'7", and lithe build. Their features are noticeably feline, with cat-like eyes, pointed ears as well as fangs and sharpened nails. They often dress in leather armor, fight tightly to their body but also made ever so subtly loose around the joints to make as little noise as possible while also allowing for an unhampered range of movement. Their usual armor comes complete with a hood, and a leather belt laden with the tools anyone would need for burglary. Their armor also has various compartments and slots to conceal knives and daggers.
Fallon is the silent type as well, but not out of any shyness. They grew up as a cutpurse on the streets, and then blossomed into a full-blown master thief. Their specialty lay in examining everything and everyone in their surroundings, whether making out marks for them to lift or good places to stick their blades in an opponent's armor. Though quiet, they are not unfriendly, often conversing with all the other students with ease. There is just always an air of unnatural calm over them, aiding in their clinical examination of every situation and lending to their strategical mind.
Fallon is most comfortable working in close quarters with Addi and Julian, as they have had the most interaction with each other. Fallon knows their capabilities and their shortcomings, as well as various tells about their mood or thoughts. They'd be classified as Fallons "best friends" if one could do so. They have had less interactions with Taraven and Yesjen, enough to get a general feel of how the two would operate in a pinch but not much beyond that. Branra and Fallon's studies have never crossed, however, and Fallon only knows of him through social interaction. They will probably make it a point to learn more about him and what he can do at some point.
((I think adding how they all interact socially would be easier once everyone has gone too))
Julian is a fit half-elf, around 5'11". His hair is a short, dark, unruly mess that he tries his best to style in the mornings, but his hair always wins the war. His olive skin is littered with pale scars from both training and all of the mishaps that he finds himself in. He's well-built; he's muscular for a half-elf and he treats his body as a temple (until he needs to eat his feelings). He also keeps his beard short and trimmed, and his right ear is pierced with a golden earring. When he's not wearing his armor, he wears common clothes in green hues; they bring out his eyes : )
Julian tries to be friendly with everyone. He's a hard worker that doesn't leave room for mistakes for himself. but he's always compassionate. Unfortunately for him (and his stealth checks), he's a damn klutz. No longer is he allowed in the kitchen areas lest he breaks both of his arms again and accidentally starts a second fire. Who lets this man carry around a glaive? He's also prone to worrying. He's protective of others, even if he doesn't know them, and has a well-developed sense of justice.
He doesn't like to share too much about himself, but he was originally a refugee from the lands beyond the Empire. He's the oldest of four, though he's the only Half-Elf; he was born out of wedlock. He and his family arrived at the capitol a few years back, and if he's honest with himself, he misses his mother's cooking. He's always been a mamma's boy.
He indulges Branra on his tavern escapades, though he knows that he's probably gonna have to drag Branra back home. Branra's attitude is a little irreverent, but besides that, he thinks that Branra has an admirable character and, admittingly, he's really fun! As for Taraven and Yesjen, he likes to talk to them amicably. They don't share a lot of lessons, but teamwork is still very important. He's most familiar with Addi and Fallon. Some might even say they're best friends : ) He knows how they fight and think, and he's snuck into the kitchens to whip up a batch of pastries for them on several occasions.
((Branra and Jules both trained in Athletics and Intimidation which honestly brings me the hysterical image that both of them are Gym Bros 4 Lyfe™. I'd also like it if Fallon and Addi were his friends! I like the contrast of a friendly worrywart and a cool silent type, and I'm totally here for the half-elf solidarity.))
(When you said training scars, I immediately imagined that most of them were caused by Branra, lol Some probably from when you were bringing Branra back from the tavern.)
Addi is also a shy type person (she reluctantly shares this story with Fallon and ), but because her parents abandoned her as a baby, and that’s because she was half-elf. Her father was really rich and wanted a full elf son/daughter, but one night he was drunk, and stuff happened. Soon after she came along, and her dad was horrified. He abandoned Addi on the streets one day. Luckily, a friendly priest brought her in and help teach Addi. Addi got to learn the way of a priest, but one day something odd happened. She won’t tell what exactly happened, but all she says is that’s how she got her sorcerer magic.
Addi is a half-elf with blonde hair, tan skin and piercing blue eyes. However, you sometimes get a glimpse of something rather odd in her eyes. They occasionally look like they have the hands of a clock in her eyes, but the next moment you blink, they’re gone. Sometimes, when affected by her magic, you can hear the faint ringing of a clock. And sometimes, if you look hard enough, you can see large, spectral cogs of wheels behind her. Any mention of this to Addi gets a look of confusion, followed by an ignoring of your questions.
Addi spends her time practicing magic or just hanging out with Fallon. Usually they don’t talk much, they understand each other and how they like to be quiet, and (at least Addi) is fine with their own thoughts. However, Addi doesn’t like when others try to change her mind, she’s stubborn about it and doesn’t like it to change. Addi normally wears dark blue, purple, and black clothing, because it makes her eyes stand out and because she like those colors. She also has an amulet with the sun of Pelor, which is the religion she follows. She is tolerant of other religions, and doesn’t try to change others minds or talk about religion that much.
The fire burns warmly, but casts little light into Mentor's study. The flickering shadows only hint at the vast number of books and scrolls that fill the many shelves. Slowly Mentor walks over to the fire.

No limitations; as long as it can be built with D&D Beyond.
Here's my character's sheet so far: https://ddb.ac/characters/28314582/AbyQ2j
His name is Julian, and he's going to be a Paladin : )
Looks good. Welcome to the campaign. Once we have enough players I'll get us started.
Hello. Don’t know much about the board game. But the story sounds fun.

I'm enjoying the balance of the group so far. We have a Barbarian, a Paladin, a Cleric, a Rogue, a Sorcerer, and a Wizard. A very balanced group.
Based on skills and Mentor's training; the following is likely:
Taraven (Wizard) and Addi (Sorcerer) studied Arcana together.
Julian (Paladin) and Branra (Barbarian) studied Athletics together.
Fallon (Rogue), Addi (Sorcerer), and Julian (Paladin) studied Deception together.
Fallon (Rogue), Addi (Sorcerer), and Julian (Paladin) studied Insight together.
Branra (Barbarian) and Julian (Paladin) studied Intimidation together.
Taraven (Wizard) and Fallon (Rogue) studied Investigation together.
Taraven (Wizard), Fallon (Rogue), Addi (Sorcerer), and Julian (Paladin) studied Perception together.
Fallon (Rogue), Addi (Sorcerer), and Julian (Paladin) studied Persuasion together.
Any other skills were independent study; away from the others.
Hope that helps with building bonds.
