Rogram smiles at Arietta. "For you, I'd make room," he says with a chuckle in his voice. He quickly looks around for Zelina, but when he notices her over by Karib, he happily turns his full attention to the blonde. He had hoped he'd see them again tonight. The sisters had been on his mind for most of the uneventful day. To prepare, he had come up with several questions to show his interest. He starts out by asking Arietta where she and her sister hail from. He remembers them saying something about knowing the traveling would be slower in a caravan, so they must travel quite a bit, and he's curious about that. That leads into asking why they're traveling to Waterdeep. And, as the roads are dangerous, he wants to ask if they have special skills to keep themselves safe while traveling. They might even be monster hunters or treasure seekers, though he doesn't ask this directly.
Rogram doesn't at all feel possessive of Arietta, and if others are around, he welcomes their questions and feels no jealousy if she showers more attention on someone else. He is very happy for the company and is happy to be their focus, but has no illusions of romance or even real feelings.
While Rogram shows no possessiveness over Arietta's attention, others on the caravan certainly do throughout the night. A number of travelers crowd around the fire at times, trying to find a way into the conversation, but Arietta pays them no mind, only offering polite and short responses before turning back to her conversation with Rogram. She talks about how she and her sister come from a small village to the south and quickly got bored of living a simple life, venturing into the Sword Coast against their family's wishes. "There's excitement on the road," she says, "And none on our parents' farm." By the end of the night, she rests a hand on Rogram's shoulder and leans her head in; most of the others pick up on the cue, conceding defeat and wandering away.
Tyjit grumbles in response to Akira, taking a big drink from her mug. "Yeah, watch out for those ditzy sisters we picked up," she says.Orvustia chuckles, saying, "Aww, I think they're both very sweet. Zelina seemed to like you when we talked to her yesterday, Tyjit, give her a chance. And they're both so pretty!" Still grumbling, Tyjit takes another swig. "It's always the pretty ones that get you in trouble," she mutters.
The caravan gets a much needed break for a few days, falling back into an uneventful routine as the road stretches into a mostly straight and flat trek northeast. "The Trollclaws are up ahead," the teamsters warn, though advising that "we have enough armed guards that we should be safe enough if we stick to the road." The terrain begins to wind along hills, but the road stays wide and well-traversed as a couple more days pass by. Though Zelina Innevar can be seen wandering between campfires each night, sharing ale with a different group every night, Arietta remains by Rogram's side whenever the caravan comes to a stop at the end of the day. Some nights are spent asking him more questions about his life and his time in Baldur's Gate, she seems content to simply sit by his side as conversations roll on through the night, sometimes dozing off on his shoulder before retiring to bed.
OOC: There are a number of questions and interactions that are unfinished, please feel free to continue those as I pause if you wish.
Rogram really enjoys Arietta's attentions, but is becoming more and more wary as he feels his tongue might get him into trouble. He doesn't want to lie to her, but he also doesn't want to say anything that will reveal his mission. He tries very hard to steer conversations back toward Arietta or to talk about more general topics like family, dreams and wishes. He really enjoys it when she falls asleep on his shoulder. Her hair always smells like flowers. And the view down her tunic is very pleasing as well. When she gets especially close, he feels a tightening in his stomach and a rising nervousness he tries to hide. He knows what sex is, but he's never experienced it. None of the females in Greenest showed him any attention, and he never pursued anyone. There were a few he could have paid to bed, but his mother had instilled in him a romantic view of sex, and that keeps Rogram from going that route. There are times when he wonders if that's what Arietta wants. He fantasizes about kissing her, but then he always talks himself out of it.
Zelina Innevar lingers near the ale wagon. "How'd you land such a cushy gig?" she asks Karib. "And aren't you worried you'll run out before we get to Waterdeep?"
Karib answers as he serves ale with a now-practiced hand. "In the right place at the right time, I guess," he says with a smile. "As to running out...well, that would be sad for everyone, but we restock in every town, so there should be plenty."
He shrugs with a glance toward his boss, "So long as it all sells, I don't think he'll be too disappointed."
"One thing I've been puzzling over: This is a dangerous place; the traders hire the guards to keep 'em safe. Yet you two...how cam you to be just waiting on the side of the road?"
He tries not to let his suspicion show, but he has been worrying about their appearance so soon after the untimely death, wondering if they were connected.
Also...if possible, Karib would have examined the corpse as well, especially after the mention of poison. With Gond's help he will look for other symptoms that might mean something to a herbalist when they reach town. Roll (medicine): 21.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Merry. We always travel together, and this was far from our first trip alone, but we're not ones to turn down good company. Not to mention it seems like this area presents...unexpected dangers," Zelina answers Merry. "And how about you? If you'll pardon my saying, elves aren't exactly known for their fondness of company. What brings you to travel this way?"
“Maybe you just haven’t met the right elves.” Merry laughs with a sparkle in his eye as he answers Zelina “Although tis true that many of our cousins can be a bit uppity at times, don’t label us all with that description. As to why I am here, I chanced across the caravan during a peryton attack and hired on as a guard after to help see them safely to their destination. And what brings you to Waterdeep, business or pleasure?”
Merry remains friendly with the sisters over the next few days of their journey and he notices that while Arietta has seemingly attached herself to Rogram, Zelina moves about the campfires talking with the other groups. A little suspicious of how they joined the caravan, Merry keeps an eye on both of the sisters, looking for any signs of deception while trying to determine their true intentions for the caravan and for traveling to Waterdeep. Insight: 13.
Akira will observe Zelina and when opportunity presents she attempt to engage her in a discussion, using her matronly qualities to be disarming.
"Let me tell you dear, if I could have scales that shine like yours I'd trade this fair skin in a heartbeat," Zelina giggles. "What would you like to talk about?"
"One thing I've been puzzling over: This is a dangerous place; the traders hire the guards to keep 'em safe. Yet you two...how cam you to be just waiting on the side of the road?"
"Arietta and I are no strangers to the dangers of the road, love. Two beautiful women on horseback can outrun just about anything out here. But it gets lonely sometimes, just the two of us with months between cities. We saw the dust from your wagons behind us and decided to wait up for you. No complaints so far," Zelina answers with a smile.
"And what brings you to Waterdeep, business or pleasure?”
Zelina shudders at the mention of perytons. She answers, "Pleasure! And if we enjoy it as much as we've heard, we'll find some work there and maybe stay for a while before we find our next destination."
For Karib:
You can confirm a diagnosis of poison as Losvius's cause of death, but you are not able to determine what exactly was used or how it would have been administered. Unless it was accidental, whoever administered it knew what they were doing.
For Merric:
Arietta seems to be completely smitten with Rogram, though she departs each night and camps with her sister. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to the target(s) of Zelina's conversation each day, and you don't detect any ill intention, though neither do you confirm that there is none.
On the conclusion of her discussion, Akira will ponder on the Zelina’s sincerity, ruminating on her answers, focusing any potential untruths or half truths she might have proffered during the conversation.
Merric turns to Rogram after the sisters leave the fire for the evening. “You seemed to have picked up a new friend, Rogram. I think she is quite taken with you.” He turns to the others “They both seem friendly enough and it doesn’t seem as if they are hiding anything. It is lucky they ran into us and not bandits.”
Rogram smiles. "You think so?" His eyes move to watch Arietta's back. "I admit that I'm developing my own attraction." He looks at the elf and furrows his brow. "But it probably isn't a good idea to start something, right?" He appears to be genuinely asking for Merric's opinion. What he might not realize is that this is a rare occasion where the half-dwarf isn't running headlong into something without thinking about it first.
You are not able to detect any outright dishonesty throughout Zelina's conversation.
Near midday, the lead wagon comes to an abrupt halt. "Hold! Gather your guards!" Beyd calls out. "We've got a situation," he mutters to Karib, pointing to the horizon.
When the merchants and guards have gathered, Beyd points it out to everyone: A freight wagon is stranded on the road in the distance, its draft animals dead. What appears to be a human merchant and three guards are sheltered under the wagon, with crates dragged between the wheels for cover. They seem to be equipped with crossbows and bolts, but are in a standoff and under siege by more than a half dozen hobgoblins, who are similarly holding near cover across the road.
Rogram smiles. "You think so?" His eyes move to watch Arietta's back. "I admit that I'm developing my own attraction." He looks at the elf and furrows his brow. "But it probably isn't a good idea to start something, right?"
“Why not? Start something, have fun, see where it goes. You have nothing to lose, right?” Merric smiles and bids the group good night.
The next day, Merric scrambles to the front of the column as he hears the shouts. Taking in the scene before him, it is obvious the wagon was under attack. He turns to the other guards “We have to help them. We can drive the hobgoblins off.” He draws his bow and looks for the best approach to make an attack while trying to determine how the enemy forces are set up. Perception: 15.
Akira's familiar reveals a top down view of the scene. Seven hobgoblins in all stand across the road from the stranded wagon, keeping it under siege. One appears to be their leader, wearing half plate and carrying a nasty looking greatsword, while the others appear stout in their chain mail with longbows drawn. The hobgoblins are adorned with wolf furs. Shields strapped to their back have the heads of wargs painted upon them, and other wolf parts and icons are scattered in their armor and clothing.
The men sheltered beneath the wagons and crates seem to be well supplied with crossbows and bolts. There is little cover between the caravan and the standoff - it is unlikely that the hogboblins have not noticed the caravan's arrival, though they have not fired any arrows this way yet.
Lai Angesstun, the dwarven merchant, grunts his approval to Merric's assessment. "The elf's right. We can't go around 'em, and come sundown the humans'll lose their sight. Hobgoblins are crafty, they'll be content to wait those guards out until they have the advantage."
Leda Widris waves over Akira and her guards to join The Pole and Rogram, Karib, and Merric. "We greatly outnumber them, assuming that the besieged guards want to help us out, but they'll have range on us with those bows. Any suggestions to keep them occupied while we charge?" she asks.
"Leave that to me," Rogram says. Everyone looks in his direction, but he looks at Lai and then Karib and finally Merric. "Wait for my signal." Before anyone can get out a proper question or order, the half-dwarf vanishes from sight after a quick spell.
@DM: Alright, Barty, what Rogram is planning to do is stealthily move past the ambush to flank them. He'll stop about 20 feet on the other side of the hobgoblins, put away his crossbow, arm his shield, then drop invisibility. He'll yell to get the hobgoblins' attentions (and signal the others) and then cast warding wind around himself. The hope is that the hobgoblins will be busy attacking him and allow the others to approach unmolested.
Karib turns to his employer. "I'd defer to your authority in this but young Rogram seems to have made my decision for me..." his voice trails off as he dismounts the wagon, wondering what the impetuous half-dwarf has planned.
He smiles at the trader, then checks the straps and buckles on his gear then watches the distant stand-off, his hand firmly grasping his staff. "Sometimes offence is the best defence."
Akira surveys the path to try to locate a spot with cover within 120 feet of the enemies. She tells the others that when the action unfolds, she will initiate a targeted attack on the hobgoblin leader in an effort to demoralize their effort.
